Chemical composition of Mentha suaveolens and Pinus halepensis essential oils and their antibacterial and antioxidant activities

Objective: To determin the chemical compounds of Mentha suaveolens(M. suaveolens) and Pinus halepensis(P. halepensis) essential oils(Eos) and evaluate their antioxidant and antibacterial activities. Methods: The chemical composition of P. halepensis and M. suaveolens EOs was determined by GC-MS analysis. The antioxidant activity was evaluated using DPPH,ABTS and FRAP assays. The antibacterial effect was tested against 6 bacterial strains using the well diffusion method and micro-dilution assay. Results: The major components of P. halepensis EOs were β-caryophyllene(28.04%),myrcene(23.81%) and α-pinene(12.02%). However,piperitenone oxid(56.28%),piperitenone(11.64%) and pulegone(6.16%) were the major components of M. suaveolens EOs. M. suaveolens EOs showed remarkable antioxidant activities compared with P. halepensis EOs,showing antioxidant capacity values of IC50=(64.76±2.24) μg/mL,IC50=(82.73±3.34) μg/mL,and IC50=(93.35±4.45) μg/mL,revealed by DPPH,ABTS and FRAP assays,respectively. However,P. halepensis EOs showed interesting antibacterial effects against all bacterial strains. The most sensible strains to P. halepensis EOs were Staphylococcus aureus [(34.00±0.50) mm],Listeria monocytogenes [(31.00±1.50)] mm and Proteus mirabilis [(29.00±2.25)mm]. Furthermore,the lowest minimal inhibitory concentration(MIC) and minimal bactericidal concentration(MBC) values were revealed by P. halepensis EOs against Staphylococcus aureus [MIC=MBC=0.125%(v/v)] and Listeria monocytogenes [MIC=MBC=0.25%(v/v)]. Conclusions: P. halepensis and M. suaveolens EOs contain bioactive compounds that could have potential applications against bacterial infections and oxidative stress related diseases as well as for food conservation. However,further investigations are necessary to isolate and investigate the action mechanisms of these bioactive compounds.

The olive species(Olea europaea L.)is an ancient traditional crop grown under rainfed conditions in the Mediterranean *** response to the growing national and international demand for olive oil,the olive cultivars are introduced into highly arid new bioclimatic ***,the morpho-physiology and phytochemistry of olive trees are potentially changing among cultivar types and geographical *** the present work,we have undertaken an assessment on the impacts of geographical location and cultivar types on the leaf morpho-physiology and phytochemistry of olive ***,leaves of the two most cultivated olive tree varieties,Chemlal and Sigoise,were collected from three geographical regions(Setif,Batna,and Eloued)with increasing aridity in *** samples from the geographical regions were analyzed using the standard physiological experiment,colorimetric method,and a chromatography *** of both cultivars exhibited a significant variance in terms of the leaf shape index but not for the leaf tissue density,specific leaf weight,and specific leaf *** pigment contents were affected by both cultivar type and geographical location,with the lowest pigment content recorded in the Sigoise cultivar from the Setif *** with the Setif and Batna regions,dried leaves of both cultivars from the Eloued region showed the higher levels of the total polyphenol,total flavonoid,and total tannin,as well as a better antioxidant *** chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of all leaf extracts identified the following phenolic acids as major compounds:oleuropein,naringin,apigenin-7-O-glucoside,kaempferol,quercetin,quercitrin,luteolin-7-O-naringenin,and quinic *** contents were found for p-Coumaric acid,trans-Ferulic acid,hyperoside,rutin,apigenin,caffeic acid,protocatechuic acid,o-Coumaric acid,and gallic ***,epicatechin and catechin+were not found in the leaf extracts of the Sigoise *** leaf organ

Spatial and statistical assessment of nitrate contamination in groundwater:Case of Sais Basin, Morocco

The objective of this study is to evaluate the nitrate contamination in the plioquaternary aquifer of Sais Basin based on a statistical approach. A total of 98 samples were collected in the cultivated area during the spring and autumn period of 2018. The results show that 55% and 57% of the samples in spring and autumn respectively exceed the threshold fixed by WHO(50 mg/L). However, nitrate concentrations do not show seasonal and spatial variation(p>0.05). The results of the correlation matrix, principal component analysis(PCA), and hierarchical cluster analysis(HCA) suggest that nitrate pollution is related to anthropogenic source. Moreover, multiple linear regression results show that NO3 is more positively explained in the spring period by Ca and SO4 and negatively explained by pH and HCO3. Regarding the autumn period, nitrate pollution is positively explained by Ca and negatively by pH. This study proposes a useful statistical platform for assessing nitrate pollution in groundwater.

This study investigates the degradation behavior of three distinct Fe-based alloys immersed in three pseudo-physiological *** alloys,which have varied Mn and C contents,include a commercially available Fe-0.15C alloy,namely Fe–C,and two newly developed alloys,that is Fe–5Mn-0.2C(namely Fe–5Mn)and Fe–18Mn-0.6C(namely Fe–18Mn).The aim was to understand the effect of alloying elements and the testing solution on the in-vitro degradation behavior of these Fe-based *** immersion degradation and potentiodynamic corrosion tests were carried out using three pseudo-physiological solutions with albumin supply,that is modified Hanks’saline solution(MHSS),phosphate buffered saline solution(PBS),and sodium chloride solution(NaCl).After two weeks of static immersion,the results revealed that Fe–5Mn,characterized by a mixture of ferrite and martensite,showed the highest degradation rate,while Fe–C,composed solely of ferrite,showed the lowest rate of *** predominant degradation products in MHSS and PBS were phosphates and *** PBS,these products formed a remarkably stable protective layer on the surface,contributing to the lowest degradation *** contrast,porous hydroxides appeared as the main degradation products for samples immersed in NaCl solution,leading to the highest degradation *** results provided important insights into the customization of Fe–Mn–C alloys for a range of biomedical applications,meeting a variety of clinical requirements,and highlighting the considerable potential of Fe–Mn–C alloys for biomedical applications.

Risk factors and prognosis of pediatric rhegmatogenous retinal detachment in Egypt:a university hospital based study

AIM:To study and compare the predisposing factors and clinical features of pediatric,adult,and elderly rhegmatogenous retinal detachment(RRD).METHODS:This is an observational analytic crosssectional study in which patients with RRD admitted for surgery during 6mo period were divided into 3 age groups:pediatric(60y).Patients’demographic data,clinical features,RRD predisposing factors/features including myopia(axial length≥26.5 mm),aphakia/pseudophakia,blunt trauma,peripheral retinal degenerations,history of RRD in the fellow eye,and surgical interventions/findings were recorded and ***:Totally 142 patients(142 eyes)were studied:26(18.31%)pediatrics,86(60.56%)adults,and 30(21.13%)*** patients had a significantly higher intraocular pressures and cataracts compared to the other 2 groups(P=0.04).The RRD extent was larger in pediatric group(mostly 4 quadrants)compared to adults and elderly(mostly 2 quadrants),but it was not statistically insignificant(P=0.242).There were not statistically significantly differences in proliferative vitreoretinopathy(PVR)rate,posterior vitreous detachment(PVD)rate,number,site,shape,and size of breaks in three *** three groups had macular detachment in all *** and peripheral retinal degenerations were found to be more significant in adults(P=0.049,P=0.035,respectively),while blunt trauma was higher but insignificant in pediatric eyes(P=0.052).Pars plana vitrectomy(PPV)with silicone oil as a tamponade was the most used surgery in all ***:There are no significant difference in PVR rate in pediatric eyes but a significant higher rate of total *** trauma is more frequent in pediatrics eyes while myopia and/or peripheral retinal degenerations are more frequent in older *** rate of PPV as a choice for surgery is similar among all age groups.

A Contrastive Analysis of Conditionals in English and Moroccan Arabic: Potential problems when learning English conditionals by Moroccan EFL learners

Learning to handle hypothetical situations in a new language is always difficult(Catford,et al.,1974).This rule holds true for Moroccan Arabic(henceforth MA)speakers learning English because grammatical devices in the two languages differ in almost all equivalent *** instance,while English verb forms are used to indicate tense in conditional sentences,MA uses them to indicate *** the typology of conditional constructions suggested by Dancygier(1999)and Dancygier&Sweetser(2005),this study provides a contrastive analysis of conditionals in English and MA to predict the possible errors EFL/ESL learners are likely to make while learning *** analysis shows that the main discrepancy between English conditionals and MA conditionals lies in the verb form used by the two ***,if EFL/ESL learners are influenced by verb form in their L1,they are likely to face some challenges while learning English *** is,they are likely to use the past tense in the protases of English predictive conditionals and generic conditionals since the perfective form of the verb is used in the protases of these two types in *** the protases of English non-predictive conditionals,Moroccan EFL/ESL learners are likely to use either the past tense or the present tense since both the perfective and the imperfective forms of the verb are possible in the protases of MA non-predictive ***,due to the fact that the perfective form is the prototypical form in the protases of conditionals in MA,EFL/ESL learners are likely to use the past tense more often than the present *** analysis also shows that EFL/ESL learners tend to use the present tense in the apodoses of English conditionals since the prevalent form in the apodoses of MA conditionals is the imperfective.

Standardization of meibomian gland dysfunction in an Egyptian population sample using a non-contact meibography technique

AIM:To develop normative data for meibomian gland dysfunction(MGD)parameters,using non-contact meibography technique of Sirius Costruzione Strumenti Oftalmici(CSO)machine,in an Egyptian population ***:Observational,cross-sectional,analytic study,in which 104 Egyptian volunteers were *** upper lids were examined,using“Sirius CSO”*** eyelid was given a degree of meibomian gland loss(MGL),which was calculated by the software of the ***:Mean percentage MGL in right upper lid was of 30.9%±12.6%,and that of left upper lid was 32.6%±11.8%.Thirty-four volunteers(32.7%)had first-degree MGL in their right upper lid,and 67.3%had second-degree *** volunteer(1%)had zero-degree MGL in left upper lid,28(26.9%)had first-degree loss,and 75(72.1%)had second-degree *** of MGL in right upper eyelid was not related to age,but degree of MGL in left upper eyelid increased with *** was statistically significant difference between both genders for degree of MGL in right eye(P=0.036)and in left eye(P=0.027).CONCLUSION:Noncontact meibography is a useful non-invasive tool for diagnosing *** is diagnosed in 100%of apparently normal individuals;26.9%-32.7%of which have first-degree MGL,and 67.3%-72.1%have second-degree MGL.

Microstructures and Mechanical Properties of Al-Zn-Sn Bearing Alloys for High Performance Applications

The mechanical behavior and indentation creep of Al-20 wt% Zn bearing alloy has been modified with adding 0.2 wt%, 0.5 wt%, 1 wt%, 1.5 wt% Sn. These bearing alloys were prepared by melt spinning technique. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to study the morphology of the melt spun alloys and x-ray diffractometer (XRD) for the identification of the phases pre- sent in these melt-spun bearing alloys.
