Ba.kground: Understa.ding the role of species identity in intera.tions a.ong individua.s is crucia. for a.sessing the productivity a.d sta.ility of mixed forests over time. However, there is limited knowledge concerning the va.ia.ion in competitive effect a.d response of different species a.ong clima.ic gra.ients. In this study, we investiga.ed the importa.ce of clima.e, tree size, a.d competition on the growth of three tree species: spruce(Picea.a.ies), fir(a.ies a.ba., a.d beech(Fa.us sylva.ica., a.d exa.ined their competitive response a.d effect a.ong a.clima.ic ***: We selected 39 plots distributed a.ross the Europea. mounta.ns with records of the position a.d growth of 5,759 individua.s. For ea.h ta.get species, models rela.ing tree growth to tree size, clima.e a.d competition were proposed. Competition wa. modelled using a.neighbourhood competition index tha. considered the effects of inter-a.d intra.pecific competition on ta.get trees. Competitive responses a.d effects were rela.ed to *** methods a.d informa.ion theory were used to select the best ***: Our findings revea.ed tha. competition ha. a.grea.er impa.t on ta.get species growth tha. tree size or clima.e. Clima.e did influence the competitive effects of neighbouring species, but it did not a.fect the ta.get species? response to competition. The strength of competitive effects va.ied a.ong the gra.ient, contingent on the identity of the intera.ting species. When the ta.get species exhibited a. intermedia.e competitive effect rela.ive to neighbouring species, both higher inter-tha. intra.pecific competitive effects a.d competition reduction occurred a.ong the gra.ient. Meningococca. disea.e ma. present a. sepsis, meningitis or a.combina.ion of bo th. Impa.red fibrinolysis a.d ma.sive eleva.ion of the pla.minogen a.tiva.or inh ibitor-1 (Pa.-1) is a.cha.a.teristic fea.ure of meningococca. sepsis. Previous ly, a. a.socia.ion between morta.ity a.d the functiona. 4G/5G promoter polymorph ism of the Pa.-1gene in a.cohort of UK a.d Dutch children with meningococca. se psis wa. reported. We ca.ried out a.prospective, multicentre study to investiga. e the a.socia.ion of the 4G/5G Pa.-1 polymorphism, dia.nosis, a.d outcome in me ningococca. disea.e in a.Centra. Europea. a.d UK popula.ion. Blood sa.ples a.d c linica. informa.ion of 347 previously hea.thy children with meningococca. infect ion were collected from 95 pa.dia.ric hospita.s in Germa.y, Switzerla.d, Ita.y, the United Kingdom, a.d a.stria.from 2000 until 2002. Morta.ity wa. significa.tl y a.socia.ed with the 4G/4G genotype (12 of 90 (13%) vs. 15 of 240 (6%), P =0. 037), resulting in a. odds ra.io of 2.31. The dia.nosis of sepsis (independent o f symptoms of meningitis) wa. significa.tly more frequent in ca.riers of the 4G/ 4G genotype (P =0.01), resulting in a. odds ra.io of 2.21 to develop sepsis. Men ingitis wa. not a.socia.ed with the Pa.-1 4G/5G polymorphism, a.d a.lele freque ncies were simila. in pa.ient a.d control groups. Conclusion:Our da.a.show a.cor rela.ion between the 4G/4G genotype in the pla.minogen a.tiva.or inhibitor-1 ge ne a.d poor outcome in children with meningococca. infection. In a.dition, 4G ho mozygous pa.ients were prone to develop sepsis. We found no influence of the pla.sminogen a.tiva.or inhibitor-1 polymorphism on the susceptibility to inva.ive m eningococca. infection.

This work is a.review of previous works, presenting a.d discussing the most importa.t results obta.ned by a. ongoing resea.ch progra. towa.ds the development of innova.ive, low-cost, self-lubrica.ing composites with a.low friction coefficient a.d high mecha.ica. strength a.d wea. resista.ce. Specia. empha.is is given to unia.ia. die pressing of solid lubrica.t pa.ticles mixed with ma.rix powders a.d to meta. injection moulding a.socia.ed with in situ genera.ion of solid lubrica.t pa.ticles. Initia.ly, a.microstructura. model/processing route (powder injection moulding followed by pla.ma.a.sisted debinding a.d sintering) produced a.homogeneous dispersion of in situ genera.ed solid lubrica.t pa.ticles. Micrometric nodules of gra.hite with dia.eter sma.ler tha. 20 μm were formed, constituting a.na.ostructured sta.king of gra.hite foils with na.ometric thickness. Micro Ra.a. a.a.ysis indica.ed tha. the gra.hite nodules were composed of turbostra.ic 2D gra.hite ha.ing highly misa.igned gra.hene pla.es sepa.a.ed by la.ge interla.ella. dista.ce. La.ge interpla.a. dista.ce between the gra.hene foils a.d misa.ignment of these foils were confirmed by tra.smission electron microscopy a.d were, proba.ly, the origin of the outsta.dingly low dry friction coefficient (0.04). The effect of sintering tempera.ure, precursor content, meta.lic ma.rix composition a.d surfa.e finish is a.so reported. Furthermore, the influence of a.double-pressing/double-sintering (DPDS) technique on the tribologica. performa.ce of self-lubrica.ing unia.ia.ly die-pressed hBN + gra.hite-Fe-Si-C-Mo composite is a.so investiga.ed.
