The exterior surfa.e of the solid is sub.ected to a.series of short therma. pulses. The cra.k surfa.e is tra.tion free a.d a. idea. therma. conta.t is a.sumed a.ross the cra.k. The stress intensity fa.tor is a.ymptotica.ly eva.ua.ed a. a.function of the cra.k depth a.d time. The effect of a.b.unda.y la.er a.socia.ed with the diffusive term is identified. The theoretica. model is supplied with numerica. simula.ions.

In this pa.er, we a.a.yze the effect of b.th deter- ministic a.d ra.dom perturb.0}ions of a.regula. multi-la.ered ela.tic structure on its stop b.0}d properties. The tool of choice is the tra.sfer ma.rix method, which is b.th versa.ile a.d ea.y to implement. In b.th ca.es, we find tha. the stop-b.0}ds widen. We ob.erve the a.pea.a.ce of very na.row pa.s-b.0}ds within the stop-b.0}ds, which ca. b. ob.erved in other insta.ces in optics.
