a.stra.t>a.mospheric emissions of fluoride from a. a.uminium smelter-a.umina.refinery loca.ed on the northern coa.t of Ga.icia. NW Spa.n, increa.e the content of fluorine in soils a.d vegeta.ion in the vicinity of the complex. The effects of the a.dition of fluoride solutions on the chemica. properties of soil sa.ples from the a.ea.surrounding the complex were investiga.ed in la.ora.ory experiments. a.dition of fluoride to soils resulted in increa.es in pH a.d concentra.ions of Fe, a., a.d orga.ic ma.ter in the equilibrium solutions a.d decrea.es in concentra.ions of Ca. Mg, a.d K. No consistent effects were observed on the Cu, Mn, or Zn concentra.ions. Most of the a. in solution wa. bound to orga.ic ma.ter. Within the fra.tion "la.ile a.uminium", the concentra.ion of a.-OH complexes decrea.ed a.d the a.-F complexes increa.ed, especia.ly a.F3 a.d a.F4 , which a.e less toxic tha. a.3+ a.d a.-OH species.
