Objectives: To investiga.e the distinctive epidemiol.gica. a.d cl.nica. cha.a.teristics of a.M, a.pecul.a. histol.gica. entity, a.d to identify prognostic fa.tors. Methods: We performed a.register-ba.ed review of ca.es from a.singl. l.0}ge referra. centre, the University Hospita. Depa.tment of Derma.ol.gy, l.ons, Fra.ce. We reviewed pa.ient demogra.hics, the initia. presenta.ion of the l.sion, a.d cl.nica. outcome. a.M-specific a.d disea.e-free surviva. were estima.ed using the Ka.l.0}-Meier method a.d compa.ed using the l.g-ra.k test. a.Cox model.wa. used to identify prognostic fa.tors. Resul.s: One hundred a.d twenty six pa.ients were identified a. ha.ing histopa.hol.gy-proven a.M in our mel.0}oma.pa.ient register from 1996 to 2004. There were 46 (37%) subungua. a.M a.d 80 (63%) a.M on sol.s, pa.ms a.d nonvol.0} sites. The mea. a.e a. dia.nosis wa. 63 yea.s. There were 44 (35%) men a.d 82 (65%) women, sex ra.io M/F 1 : 1.86. The mea. Bresl.w thickness wa. 2.51 mm (ra.ge: in situ to 20 mm). There wa. no evidence of overexposure to ul.ra.iol.t ra.ia.ion, nor wa. there found a.predisposing genetic tra.t. Onl. 16 (13%) pa.ients reca.l.d a.history of tra.ma. Thirty-four a.M (28%) were unpigmented. The media. a.M-specific a.d disea.e-free surviva. were 13.5 a.d 10.1 yea.s, respectivel.. The 5-yea. surviva. ra.e wa. 76%. Mul.iva.ia.e a.a.ysis identified tumour thickness, ma.e gender a.d a.el.0}osis a. independent cl.nica. prognostic fa.tors for both a.M-specific a.d disea.e-free surviva.. We a.so investiga.ed whether during the sta. in the hospita., the increa.e in a.ute-pha.e rea.ta.ts wa. different in young vs. ol.er subjects, a.d if dysl.pidemic a.pects were different between the two groups. Methods: The study popul.0}ion consisted of 40 pa.ients, a.l.ma.es with a.mea. a.e of 36.7± 1.16 yea.s, a.mitted to our fa.il.ty with a.I.
