The Densu River Ba.in constitutes one of the la.gest a.ricultura. a.ea. in Gha.a. The pra.tice of using pesticides such a. orga.ochlorines, orga.ophospha.es, ca.ba.a.es, pyrethroids a.d severa. others in a.riculture a.d public hea.th progra.s ha. ra.sed concerns a.out potentia.ly a.verse effects on huma. hea.th a.d the environment. In this study, a.field survey wa. conducted to a.sess fa.mers’ knowledge of sa.e ha.dling a.d use of pesticides. Residues of pesticides in fish sa.ples a. well a. the potentia. hea.th risk a.socia.ed with exposure to these pesticides were a.so eva.ua.ed. Da.a.obta.ned from the field survey indica.e tha. a.very high proportion of fa.mers a.e a. high risk of pesticide poisoning from occupa.iona. exposure. More tha. 90% of fa.m workers do not pra.tice sa.ety preca.tion during pesticide formula.ion a.d a.plica.ion lea.ing to considera.le preva.ence of pesticide rela.ed illness in this a.ricultura. community. Pesticide residues in fish sa.ples va.ied grea.ly;from 0.10 μgKg-1 to 30.90 μgKg-1, consumption of fish a.d fisheries product from the ba.in wa. no zero risk. The estima.ed dose for a.drin, methoxychlor, γ-chlorda.e, endrin a.dehyde, endrin ketone, endrin, p'p'-DDT a.d δ- HCH do not pose a.direct ha.a.d to huma. hea.th, a.though present in fish sa.ples since the va.ues were lower tha. toxic thresholds a. well a. reference dose. However, γ- HCH, hepta.hlor, α-endosulfa., endosulfa. Sulpha.e, p'p'-DDE a.d dieldrin levels exceeded the reference dose, indica.ing a.grea. potentia. for systemic toxicity in children who a.e considered to be the most vulnera.le popula.ion subgroup.
