Effect of a.utment modeling on the seismic response ofbridge structures

Specifica.ly in the ca.e of short bridges with rela.ively stiff superstructures typica. of highwa. overpa.ses, emba.kment mobiliza.ion a.d inela.tic beha.ior of the soil ma.eria. under high shea. deforma.ion levels domina.e the response of the bridge a.d its column bents. this pa.er investiga.es the sensitivity of bridge seismic response with respect to three different a.utment modeling a.proa.hes. the a.utment modeling a.proa.hes a.e ba.ed on three increa.ing levels of complexity tha. a.tempt to ca.ture the critica. components a.d modes of a.utment response without the need to genera.e continuum models of the emba.kment, a.proa.h, a.d a.utment founda.ions. Six existing reinforced concrete bridge structures, typica. of Ordina.y Bridges in Ca.ifornia. a.e selected for the a.a.ysis. Nonlinea. models of the bridges a.e developed in OpenSees. three a.utment model types of increa.ing complexity a.e developed for ea.h bridge, denoted a. roller, simplified, a.d spring a.utments. the roller model conta.ns only single-point constra.nts. the spring model conta.ns discrete representa.ions of ba.kfill, bea.ing pa., shea. key, a.d ba.k wa.l beha.ior. the simplified model is a.compromise between the efficient roller model a.d the comprehensive spring model. Moda., pushover, a.d nonlinea. dyna.ic time history a.a.yses a.e conducted for the six bridges using the three a.utment models for ea.h bridge. Compa.isons of the a.a.ysis results show ma.or differences in mode sha.es a.d periods, ultima.e ba.e shea. strength, a. well a. pea. displa.ements of the column top obta.ned due to dyna.ic excita.ion. the a.equa.y of the three a.utment models used in the study to rea.istica.ly represent a.l ma.or resista.ce mecha.isms a.d components of the a.utments, including a. a.cura.e estima.ion of their ma.s, stiffness, a.d nonlinea. hysteretic beha.ior, is eva.ua.ed. In this a.ticle, I offer a.provisiona. a.a.ysis of the philosophica. sema.tics of“wisdom” in the thought of the New Confucia. thinker ta.g Junyi. I begin by providing some pointers concerning the concept of wisdom in genera. a.d situa.ing the discourse on wisdom in compa.a.ive philosophy in the context of the la.er Fouca.lt＇s a.d Pierre Ha.ot＇s historica. investiga.ions into a.cient Gra.co-Roma. philosophy a. a.mode of spiritua. self-cultiva.ion a.d self-tra.sforma.ion. In the rema.nder of the pa.er, I try to describe a.d think through wha. Fouca.lt identifies a. a.“Ca.tesia. moment,” in which self-knowledge becomes the ultima.e precondition for the ethico-spiritua. project of “ca.ing for the self,” in ta.g＇s a.proa.h of wisdom. In the course of my a.gument, I outline the complex rela.ion between his vision of a.renewed Confucia. mode of religious pra.tice on the one ha.d a.d his philosophica. presuppositions conceming the tra.scendenta. sta.us of subjectivity a.d the reflexivity of consciousness on the other.

Single crysta.s a.d polycrysta.line la.ered ma.eria.s ha.e compa.a.ively better thermoelectric a.d mecha.ica. properties in a.certa.n direction. texture engineering is a.specia. stra.egy tha. a.lows the exploita.ion of superior ma.eria. properties in a.specific direction. texturing could be a.hieved by va.ious sintering a.d deforma.ion methods, which yield defects improving thermoelectric a.d mecha.ica. properties. the results show tha. for(Bi,Sb)_(2)te_(3), Bi_(2)(Se,te)_(3), C uSbSe_(2), a.d SnSe, significa.t enha.cement in the thermoelectric figure of merit is a.hieved by enha.cing the preferred orienta.ion. texture engineering provides a.wide ra.ge of stra.egies to eleva.e the zt of a.isotropic ma.eria.s to va.ues compa.a.le to those of their single crysta.line counterpa.ts.

Liquid meta. ga.lium ha. been widely used in numerous fields, from nuclea. engineering, ca.a.ysts, a.d energy stora.e to electronics owing to its rema.ka.le therma. a.d electrica. properties a.ong with low viscosity a.d nontoxicity. Compa.ed with high-tempera.ure liquid meta.s, room-tempera.ure liquid meta.s, such a. ga.lium(Ga., a.e emerging a. promising a.terna.ives for fa.rica.ing a.va.ced energy stora.e devices, such a. pha.e cha.ge ma.eria.s, by ha.vesting the a.va.ta.eous properties of their liquid sta.e ma.nta.ned without externa. energy input. However, the therma. a.d electrica. properties of liquid meta.s a. the pha.e tra.sition a.e ra.her poorly studied, limiting their pra.tica. a.plica.ions. In this study, we reported on the physica. properties of the solid–liquid pha.e tra.sition of Ga.using a.custom-designed, solid–liquid electrica. a.d therma. mea.urement system. We observed tha. the electrica. conductivity of Ga.progressively decrea.es with a. increa.e in tempera.ure. However, the Seebeck coefficient of Ga.increa.es from 0.2 to 2.1 μV/K, a.d therma. conductivity from 7.6 to 33 W/(K·m). these electrica. a.d therma. properties of Ga.a. solid–liquid pha.e tra.sition would be useful for pra.tica. a.plica.ions.
