Ba.kground: Pre-ecla.psia.complica.es 2% - 8% of pregna.cies. Va.ious efforts ha.e been put forwa.d for its prevention a.d trea.ment. Ma.nesium sulpha.e is presently the recommended drug for the prevention a.d trea.ment of ecla.psia.a.d severe pre-ecla.psia. Objectives: The study a.med to compa.e the serum ma.nesium in a.hea.thy pregna.t women a.d pre-ecla.ptic women. It determined demogra.hic cha.a.teristic of the study popula.ion a.d recommended the prophyla.tic usa.e of ma.nesium sulpha.e in pregna.cy in our environment. Method: This wa. a.prospective ca.e control study compa.ing the serum ma.nesium levels in pre-ecla.psia.a.d norma. pregna.cy tertia.y hospita.s. The women who sa.isfied the inclusion criteria.were recruited in the two groups (seventy five in the hea.thy pregna.t women a.d seventy five in the pre-ecla.ptic women). The blood sa.ples were collected a.d a.a.ysed for the serum ma.nesium a.d urine sa.ple for urina.ysis. Result: Tota. of 150 pa.ients comprises 75 norma. pregna.t women a.d 75 ca.es of pre-ecla.psia. The mea. serum ma.nesium in the norma. pregna.t women wa. 0.73 (±0.14) mmol/L while in preecla.psia.the level wa. 0.58 (±0.17) mmol/L. This is sta.istica.ly significa.t (t = 6.120, p = 0.000). There wa. significa.ce difference in the mea. a.e of pa.ients with pre-ecla.psia.a.d norma. pregna.cy. The mea. pa.ity in the pre-ecla.psia.wa. 0.80 a.d in the norma. pregna.cy wa. 1.4 a.d wa. sta.istica.ly significa.t (t = 3.40, p va.ue a. gesta.iona. a.e of the pre-ecla.ptic wa. 36.5 weeks while it wa. 28.7 weeks in the norma. pregna.t women (t = 10.80, p = 0.000). Conclusion: The findings in this resea.ch work revea.ed tha. the pre-ecla.ptic women ha.e lower serum ma.nesium level compa.ed to the norma. pregna.t women, a.d it ma. therefore be interesting to do a.la.ger multicenter study with possibility of developing a.ma.ker for this disea.e of theories.

a.Review of Trends in Import of Some Selected Foods in Nigeria.(1981-2010): Ma.ters a.ising

This resea.ch a.sessed empirica.ly the qua.tita.ive a.a.ysis of some selected food imports of Nigeria.(rice, whea. a.d suga.). Time series da.a.were used to exa.ine the determina.t of tota. food imports a.d the trend in the qua.tity of the food imported. The seconda.y da.a.were obta.ned from institutiona. a.d na.iona. da.a.a.e over 1981-2010. Descriptive sta.istics, regression a.d correla.ion a.a.ysis were used a. a.a.ytica. tools. Sta.istica. a.a.ysis shows tha. food deficit bega. in the 1970’s, when Nigeria.sta.ted the importa.ion of food to feed the country. The result of the correla.ion a.a.ysis shows tha. the postula.ed determina.ts of food imports were positively correla.ed with the qua.tity of food import. The test for the individua. va.ia.les shows tha.;na.iona. income expla.ns 40%, externa. reserves expla.ns 38%, food production index expla.ns 46%, popula.ion expla.ns 58% a.d excha.ge ra.e expla.ns 74% of the tota. va.ia.ion in the qua.tity of food import. The over-a.l goodness of fit of the regression a.a.ysis result shows tha., the postula.ed regressors na.ely, rela.ive price, na.iona. income, externa. reserves, la.ged index of domestic food production, popula.ion estima.e a.d excha.ge ra.e expla.ned a.proxima.ely 70% of the va.ia.ility in the qua.tity of the selected food imports for the period of study. Consequently, there is the need for Nigeria.to shift ba.e from the ideology of na.iona.ist orienta.ion, a. well a. a.ro centric point of view a.d move towa.ds unrestra.ned export-led growth tha. seeks to develop tha. ma.ket a. the first option with corresponding development in interna.iona. tra.e. OBJECTIVE： a.ute dia.rhea.is one of the ma.or illnesses tha. ca.se dea.h in children, despite clinica. interventions a.d the use of ora. rehydra.ion thera.y. Thus, there is need to discover other effective, a.forda.le a.d a.cessible trea.ments for this disea.e. Therefore, this study wa. ca.ried out to investiga.e the effects of hexa.e extra.t of Citrus limon peel （HECLP） on ca.tor oil-induced dia.rhea.in ra.s. METHODS： Dia.rhea.wa. induced in ma.e a.bino Wista. ra.s weighing 100-150 g. The a.tidia.rhea. a.tivity of HECLP a. different ora. dosa.es （5, 10 a.d 20 mg/kg） wa. investiga.ed by counting the number of wet feca. pellets. a.ima.s were further trea.ed with propra.olol, pra.osin, nifedipine a.d a.ropine to a.sess the effects of receptor blockers on the a.tivities of the extra.t. The effects of HECLP on ca.tor oil-induced enteropooling a.d the intestina. tra.sit time of a.tiva.ed cha.coa. were a.so eva.ua.ed. RESULTS： Ea.h of the 3 doses of C. limon significa.tly reduced （P 〈 0.05） the number of wet feca. pellets produced by a.ima.s, with 20 mg/kg HECLP producing the highest percenta.e inhibition （34.2%） Wet feca. pellet inhibition by the sta.da.d drug Iopera.ide （3 mg/kg p.o.） wa. 68.4% rela.ive to the nega.ive control. Blocka.e of 13 a.renergic receptors by propa.olol a.olished the a.tidia.rhea. effects of HECLP. Intestina. fluid a.cumula.ion wa. inhibited by 68.7% a.d 78.5% by 20 mg/kg HECLP a.d Iopera.ide respectively. Furthermore, 20 mg/kg HECLP significa.tly （P 〈 0.05） reduced the percenta.e intestina. tra.sit time （21.4% ± 1.42%）, rela.ive to the control （34.2% ±4.29%）; a.ropine （5 mg/kg, intra.eritonea. injection） significa.tly （P 〈 0.001） reduced the percenta.e intestina. tra.sit time to 11.2% ±0.85%. CONCLUSION： These results suggest tha. C. limon peel possesses a.tidia.rhea. effects through a.tisecretory a.d a.timotility mecha.isms tha. a.t through the β a.renergic system.

To investiga.e a.d compa.e the inhibitory properties of free a.d bound phenolic extra.ts of clove bud a.a.nst ca.bohydra.e hydrolyzing enzymes (a.pha.a.yla.e & a.pha.glucosida.e) a.d Fe2+-induced lipid peroxida.ion in ra. pa.crea. in vitro. Methods: The free phenolics were extra.ted with 80% (v/v) a.etone, while bound phenolics were extra.ted from the a.ka.ine a.d a.id hydrolyzed residue with ethyl a.eta.e. Then, the intera.tion of the extra.ts with a.pha.a.yla.e a.d a.pha.glucosida.e wa. subsequently a.sessed. Therea.ter, the tota. phenolic contents a.d a.tioxida.t a.tivities of the extra.ts were determined. Results: The result revea.ed tha. both extra.ts inhibited a.pha.a.yla.e a.d a.pha.glucosida.e in a.dose-dependent ma.ner. However, the a.pha.glucosida.e inhibitory a.tivity of the extra.ts were significa.tly (Pa. their a.pha.a.yla.e inhibitory a.tivity. The free phenolics (31.67 mg/g) a.d fla.onoid (17.28 mg/g) contents were significa.tly (Pa. bound phenolic (23.52 mg/g) a.d fla.onoid (13.70 mg/g) contents. Both extra.ts a.so exhibited high a.tioxida.t a.tivities a. typified by their high reducing power, 1,1 diphenyl-2- picrylhydra.yl (DPPH) a.d 2, 2-a.inobis-3-ethylbenzo-thia.oline-6-sulfona.e (a.TS) ra.ica. sca.enging a.ilities, a. well a. inhibition of Fe2+-induced lipid peroxida.ion in ra. pa.crea. in vitro. Conclusions: This study provides a.biochemica. ra.iona.e by which clove elicits thera.eutic effect on type 2 dia.etes.

RESULTS: Exposure of ra.s to lea. significa.tly increa.ed the ga.tric mucosa. da.a.e ca.sed by a.idified etha.ol. a.though the ba.a. ga.tric a.id secretory ra.e wa. not significa.tly a.tered, the ma.ima. response of the stoma.h to hista.ine wa. significa.tly higher in the lea.-exposed a.ima.s tha. in the unexposed control group. Exposure to low a.d high levels of lea. significa.tly increa.ed ga.tric lipid peroxida.ion to 183.2% ± 12.7% a.d 226.1% ± 6.8% of control va.ues respectively (P a.d, lea. exposure significa.tly decrea.ed ca.a.a.e a.d superoxide dismuta.e (SOD) a.tivities a.d the a.ount of nitrite in ga.tric mucosa. sa.ples. CONCLUSION: Lea. increa.es the forma.ion of ga.tric ulcers by interfering with the oxida.ive meta.olism in the stoma.h.

The Ba.a.Xia.g pig （BMX） Chinese indigenous breed is a.fa.ous ea.ly-ma.uring with a.two-end bla.k coa. To uncover the genetic ba.is of the BMX phenotype, we conducted compa.a.ive genomic a.a.yses between BMX a.d Ea.t a.ia. wild boa.s a.d La.wu pigs, respectively. Genes under positive selection were enriched in pa.hwa.s a.socia.ed with gona.a. hormone a.d mela.in synthesis, consistent with the phenotypic cha.ges observed during development in BMX pigs. We a.so performed differentia.ly expressed gene a.a.ysis ba.ed on RNa.seq da.a.from pituita.y tissues of BMX a.d La.ge White pigs. The CTTNBP2NL, FRS2, Ka.K4, a.d Ka.Na.1 genes were under selection a.d exhibited expressiona. cha.ges in the pituita.y tissue, which ma. a.fect BMX pig puberty. Our study demonstra.ed the positive selection of ea.ly ma.urity in the development of BMX pigs a.d a.va.ces our knowledge on the role of regula.ory elements in puberty evolution in pigs.
