The mechanism of a retracting cantilevered beam has been investigated by the invariant and energy-based analysis. The time-varying parameter partial differential equation governing the transverse vibrations of a beam with retracting motion is derived based on the momentum theorem. The assumed-mode method is used to truncate the governing partial differential equation into a set of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) with time-dependent coefficients. It is found that if the order of truncation is not less than the order of the initial conditions, the assumed-mode method can yield accurate results. The energy transfers among assumed modes are discussed during retraction. The total energy varying with time has been investigated by numerical and analytical methods, and the results have good agreement with each other. For the transverse vibrations of the axially retracting beam, the adiabatic invariant is derived by both the averaging method and the Bessel function method. Classical recommender systems provide users with a list of recommendations where each recommendation consists of a single item, e.g., a book or DvD. However, sev- eral applications can benefit from a system capable of recom- mending packages of items, in the form of sets. Sample appli- cations include travel planning with a limited budget （price or time） and twitter users wanting to select worthwhile tweeters to follow, given that they can deal with only a bounded num- ber of tweets. In these contexts, there is a need for a system that can recommend the top-k packages for the user to choose from. Motivated by these applications, we consider composite recommendations, where each recommendation comprises a set of items. Each item has both a value （rating） and a cost associated with it, and the user specifies a maximum total cost （budget） for any recommended set of items. Our composite recommender system has access to one or more component recommender systems focusing on different do- mains, as well as to information sources which can provide the cost associated with each item. Because the problem of deciding whether there is a recommendation （package） whose cost is under a given budget and whose value exceeds some threshold is NP-complete, we devise several approximation algorithms for generating the top-k packages as recommen- dations. We analyze the efficiency as well as approximation quality of these algorithms. Finally, using two real and two synthetic datasets, we subject our algorithms to thorough ex- perimentation and empirical analysis. Our findings attest tothe efficiency and quality of our approximation algorithms for the top-k packages compared to exact algorithms.

The increasing use of petrodiesel-biodiesel fuel blends throughout the world requires fast, economic and efficient analytical techniques that can be used for the quality control of these fuels. In this work, we developed an analytical method for determining the concentration of African palm biodiesel in blends with petrodiesel;the method is based on infrared spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR). To build a prediction model, nineteen petrodiesel-biodiesel blends were prepared in triplicate with biodiesel concentrations for 0%-100% by weight. The blends were analyzed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, the spectral fingerprint data were used to build a prediction model through PLS regression. The optimal number of principal components (PCs), the standard error of calibration (SEC), the standard validation error (sev), the correlation coefficient of calibration (r Cal) and the validation correlation coefficient (r val) were used to validate the predictive ability of the model. The results show that the model obtained in this work has a good ability for determining the concentration of African palm biodiesel in petrodiesel-biodiesel blends.
