Predictors of vitamin D deficiency in inflammatory bowel disease and health: A Mississippi perspective

AIMTo identify the predictors of vitamin D deficiency in patients with and without inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).METHODSPatients with ulcerative colitis (UC) or Crohn’s disease (CD) related diagnostic codes who received medical care at University of Mississippi Medical Center between July 2012 and 2015 were identified. After thorough chart review, we identified patients with biopsy proven IBD who had also been tested for serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentration. We compared these patients to a previously studied cohort of healthy controls who also had vitamin D concentration checked. Logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the association between vitamin d deficiency and UC, CD, race, age, gender and body mass index (BMI).RESULTSWe identified 237 patients with confirmed IBD. Of these, only 211 had a serum 25(OH)D concentrations available in the medical record. The group of healthy controls consisted of 98 individuals with available serum 25(OH)D concentration. 43% of IBD patients were African American (AA). Patients with CD were more likely to have vitamin D concentration checked. Bivariate analysis showed that AA (51% vs 21%, P = 0.00001), subjects with BMI >30 kg/m2 (39% vs 23% P = 0.01) and CD (40% vs 26%, P = 0.04) were more likely to be vitamin D deficient than vitamin D sufficient. Those with Age > 65 were more likely to be vitamin D sufficient (46% vs 15%, P = 0.04). Multiple regression showed that only BMI > 30 kg/m2 and AA race are associated with vitamin D *** > 30 kg/m2 and AA race are predictive of vitamin D deficiency. Gender, age and diagnosis of IBD are not predictive of vitamin D deficiency.

22.1. Introduction to Standard Big-Bang Model The observed expansion of the Universe [1-3] is a natural （almost inevitable） result of any homogeneous and isotropic cosmological model based on general relativity. However, by itself, the Hubble expansion does not provide sufficient evidence for what we generally refer to as the Big-Bang model of cosmology. While general relativity is in principle capable of describing the cosmology of any given distribution of matter, it is extremely fortunate that our Universe appears to be homogeneous and isotropic on large scales. Together, homogeneity and isotropy allow us to extend the Copernican Principle to the Cosmological Principle, stating that all spatial positions in the Universe are essentially equivalent.

Delta winglets are an effective means for enhancing heat exchange and thus the performance of renewable energy technologies,including solar energy.A pair of 0.1 mm thick,15 mm high(h)and 30 mm long aluminum winglets separated with transversal spacing,s,of 2h,h and 0 were scrutinized in a closed-loop wind tunnel at a Reynolds number based on h of *** turbulent flow was characterized using a 3D hotwire probe,and the heat convection augmentation was quantified in terms of the normalized Nusselt number(Nu/Nu0),indicating the heat transfer improve-ment compared to the reference case without the *** interaction of the organized counter-rotational vortices intensifies and they become indiscernible at s=*** peak strain rate at 10h downstream increased from 390 s^(–1),to 478 s^(–1),to 514 s^(–1),when the spacing decreased from 2h to h to 0,*** zero-spaced winglet pair provided the largest Nu/Nu0,of around 1.21,at X/h=10 and Y/h=0,approximately 21%higher than that of 2h-spaced winglet pair,due to the strongest strain rate and the absence of upwash *** the other hand,the 2h-spaced winglet pair provided the largest span-averaged Nu/Nu0,which is of practical significance.

Transarterial chemoembolization(TACE)is the first line treatment for patients with intermediate stage hepatocellular carcinoma but is also increasingly being used for patients on the transplant waiting list to prevent further tumor *** its widespread use,TACE remains an unstandardized procedure,with variation in type and size of embolizing particles,type and dose of chemotherapy and interval between *** evidence from randomized controlled trials suggest that bland transarterial embolization(TAE)has the same efficacy with *** the current article,we review the use of TACE and TAE for hepatocellular carcinoma and we focus on the evidence for their use.

Novel targeting approaches and signaling pathways of colorectal cancer: An insight

Colorectal cancer(CRC) is the third most common cancer of mortality in the world. Chemotherapy based treatment leads to innumerable side effects as it delivers the anticancer drug to both normal cells besides cancer cells. Sonic Hedgehog(SHH), Wnt wingless-type mouse mammary tumor virus/β-catenin, transforming growth factor-β/SMAD, epidermal growth factor receptor and Notch are the main signaling pathways involved in the progression of CRC. Targeted therapies necessitate information regarding the particular aberrant pathways. Advancements in gene therapies have resulted in the recognition of novel therapeutic targets related with these signal-transduction cascades. CRC is a stepwise process where mutations occur over the time and activation of oncogenes and deactivation of tissue suppressor genes takes place. Genetic changes which are responsible for the induction of carcinogenesis include loss of heterozygosity in tumor suppressor genes such as adenomatous polyposis coli, mutation or deletion of genes like p53 and k-ras. Therefore, many gene-therapy approaches like gene correction, virusdirected enzyme-prodrug therapy, immunogenetic manipulation and virotherapy are currently being explored. Development of novel strategies for the safe and effective delivery of drugs to the cancerous site is the need of the hour. This editorial accentuates different novel strategies with emphasis on gene therapy and immunotherapy for the management of CRC.

This study explores the mechanical properties of a novel composite material,blending polylactic acid(PLA)with sea shells,through a comprehensive tensile test *** tensile test results offer valuable insights into the material’s behavior under axial loading,shedding light on its strength,stiffness,and deformation *** results suggest that the incorporation of sea shells decrease the tensile strength of 14.55%and increase the modulus of 27.44%for 15 wt%SSP(sea shell powder)into PLA,emphasizing the reinforcing potential of the mineral-rich sea shell ***,a potential trade-off between decreased strength and reduced ductility is noted,highlighting the need for a delicate balance in material *** study underscores the importance of uniform sea shell particle distribution within the PLA matrix for consistent mechanical *** results offer a basis for additional PLA-sea shell blend optimization,directing future efforts to balance strength,flexibility,and other critical attributes for a range of applications,including biomedical devices and sustainable *** investigation opens the door to more sustainable and mechanically strong materials in the field of additive manufacturing by demonstrating the positive synergy between nature-inspired materials and cutting-edge testing techniques.

Performance and variability patterns in wood properties and growth traits in the parents, F1 and F2 generation hybrid clones of Populus deltoides

The performance and variability patterns in the wood element’s dimensions, specific gravity and growth parameters namely ramet height and GBH were evaluated in 16 clones of parents, F1 and F2 hybrids of Populus deltoides Bartr. ex Marsh. Ramet radial variations were nonsignificant, while inter-clonal variations due to interaction of clone/replication were significant for all the wood traits except vessel element length. Inter-clonal variations were significant only for fiber length and fiber wall thickness. Fiber length and specific gravity were significantly higher in female, while wall thickness and vessel element length were higher in male clones. Female parents （G48 and S7C8） showed higher fiber length and specific gravity than of the male parent （G3）, while vessel diameter and wall thickness were higher in male par- ent （G3）. There is not much difference in fiber length and vessel element’s dimensions among the parents, F1 and F2 generation hybrid clones. Specific gravity did not showed any trend for parents, F1 and F2 generations. Generally female clones showed higher growth rate. Broad sense heritability for wood traits ranged from 0.143 （fiber length） to 0.505 （fiber wall thickness）, while for growth traits it was 0.374 （GBH） and 0.418 （height）. Genetic gain for all the wood and growth traits was positive for most of the wood traits. The highly divergent male clone （78） and female clones （S7C8, G48, W/A 49） in number of combinations could be used for developing new hybrids of desired wood traits to develop new clones.

Hydriding and dehydriding properties of MgH_(2)-x wt.%NiMn_(9.3)Al_(4.0)Co_(14.1)Fe_(3.6)(x=10,25,50)nanocomposites have been investigated in present *** alloy was prepared by arc melting method and ball milled with MgH_(2)to get *** temperature as low as 180℃was observed for MgH_(2)-50 wt%system which is 80℃lower than the as-milled MgH_(2)giving 131.34 kJ/mol activation *** analysis shows tetragonal,orthorhombic and monoclinic phases for MgH_(2),Al_(60)Mn_(11)Ni_(4)and Mg_(2)NiH_(4).Morphology by SEM were undertaken to investigate the effect of hydrogenation on nanostructured *** studies show a single broad exothermic peak in the temperature range 48℃-353℃after alloy addition in MgH_(2).These results indicate that the hydrogenation properties of MgH_(2)nanocomposite have been improved compared to the as-milled MgH_(2).

Fuzzy　Logic　Based　Adaptive　Control　of　Constrained　Flexible-link　Robot

In this paper, a novel adaptive fuzzy control scheme is presented . The controller is constructed by using a table lookup scheme and self tuning techniques, which includes the identification block, the fuzzification, the updating rule base, the defuzzification, and the crisp controller (sub controller), etc. The adaptive fuzzy controller is designed in detail by means of triangular membership function and the center of gravity method. The control scheme addressed here is implemented to control the motion of the end effector of a two link constrained flexible manipulator. Computer simulation results show that the novel adaptive fuzzy control scheme works quite well.
