The geological evolution in the southwestern Chinese Tianshan orogen in NW china is poorly understood because of controversial geochronological results of the low-temperature *** is likely due to Sm-Nd and Rb-Sr isotopic disequilibrium in different mineral fractions,excess Ar in the high-pressure K-bearing minerals,and multi-stage growths of zircon in U-Pb ***,as a typical eclogite-facies mineral with high U/Pb ratio,is a feasible candidate to constrain the eclogite-facies metamorphic *** this study,we measured U-Pb rutile age data using SIMS(Cameca IMS 1280) for low-temperature eclogites from southwestern Chinese Tianshan orogen,NW *** demonstrate that SIMS is a powerful technique for insitu U-Pb dating of rutile with U content as low as 1 *** U-Pb rutile dating yielded an age of 318±7 Ma,which may record the time when the rocks cooled down to the closure temperature of Pb in rutile(ca. 500℃),but should be very close to the time of eclogite-facies metamorphism in terms of common fast exhumation of coesite-bearing *** new proof strongly suggests a late Carboniferous collision between Kazakhstan-Yili block and Central Tianshan microcontinent.

Both construction-stage monitoring and operation-stage monitoring are very much needed for a major rock slope *** operation-stage safety monitoring system with an automatic monitoring information system was designed on the basis of a construction-stage monitoring system for the shiplock slope of Wuqiangxi Hydropower Station in the south central *** establishing method,prominent features,and application results are briefly introduced in this *** characteristic functions are as follows:joint monitoring of key parts of the slope,thunderproofing of both installed transducers and monitoring instruments,all-weather continuous monitoring of relative displacement between slope toe and shiplock,advanced management of automatic monitoring,fast visual inquiry and analysis of monitoring data,and preliminary decision support for slope safety evaluation and *** has met the special demands of operation-stage monitoring and plays an important part in raising the flood-storage capacity of the dam and ensuring the safe operation of the shiplock.

Integrated geological and geophysical investigations were carried out in 26.active mines in Northwestern china during the period 2001-2006.to explore for hidden extensions of known ore bodies and to search for new *** paper presents four case studies from northwest china:the Kuoerzhenkuoa volcanogenic hydro-thermal gold deposit,the Nanjinshan breccia-associated gold deposit,the Duolanasayi deposit,associated with a ductile-shear zone,and the Hulu magmatic Cu-Ni sulfide *** these studies,detailed mine-scale geological studies were carried out to determine the location and controls on ore *** on these investigations and a review of previous exploration data,genetic models for the deposits were evaluated,and specific new targets were *** target areas were tested with surface geophysical surveys using the Stratagem EH4 system,a hybrid-source magnetotellurics(MT) *** of the data obtained in the surveys identified geophysical target anomalies that were subsequently *** of these test holes demonstrate the presence of Au and Cu-Ni *** of the geological models was crucial in developing conceptual targets as a basis for surface geophysical *** models established the most likely target areas where Au and Cu-Ni mineralization could occur,but they did not define the limits or the geometries of the mineralized *** MT surveys played an important role in defining the location of buried mineralized systems and in testing the validity of the conceptual *** resistivity cross-sections obtained by imaging the MT data established the boundaries and geometries of the host rocks,including the distribution of lithology,structures,alteration,and *** four case studies in this paper show how this integrated geological and geophysical approach was used successfully to discover hidden mineral deposits.

An improved model is presented for the calculation of the solubility of carbon dioxide in aqueous solutions containing Na,K,Ca,Mg,Cl,and SO in a wide temperature-pressure-ionic strength range(from 273 to 533 K,from 0 to 2000 bar,and from 0 to 4.5 molality of salts) with experimental *** improvements over the previous model [Duan,*** Sun,R.,*** improved model calculating CO solubility in pure water and aqueous NaCl solutions from 273 to 533K and from 0 to 2000 *** geology,193: 257-271]include:(1) By developing a non-iterative equation to replace the original equation of state in the calculation of CO fugacity coefficients,the new model is at least twenty times computationally faster and can be easily adapted to numerical reaction-flow simulator for such applications as CO sequestration and(2) By fitting to the new solubility data,the new model improved the accuracy below 288 K from 6.to about 3%of uncertainty but still retains the high accuracy of the original model above 288 *** comprehensively evaluate all experimental CO solubility *** with these data,this model not only reproduces all the reliable data used for the parameterization but also predicts the data that were not used in the *** order to facilitate the application to CO sequestration,we also predicted CO solubility in seawater at two-phase coexistence(vapor-liquid or liquid-liquid) and at three-phase coexistence (CO hydrate-liquid water-vapor CO[or liquid CO]).The improved model is programmed and can be downloaded from the website http://***/***.

A cubic equation of state was developed for both pure systems and mixtures in this *** has only one empirical constant to be evaluated for each component and two constants for each *** test its validity,the saturated properties of 22 pure fluids were calculated with the new equation,as compared with the most frequently used or the most recently published cubic *** results indicate that the new equation is superior to the previous cubic equations in the overall performance in vapor pressures and saturated *** overall average deviation of the saturation pressures from experiments is 0.46.,and the maximum deviation is 3.6..Its average deviation of the liquid volumes from experiments at the reduced temperatures T≤0.95 is 2.80%,and that of vapor volumes is 2.2%.Because of the high accuracy of the new equation for saturation pressures,it can be easily extended to binary mixtures for the prediction of vapor-liquid equilibria(both densities and compositions) with a simple mixing rule,as demonstrated by eight binary systems,including an aqueous mixture.

SUMMARY In this paper,we examine the effects of temperature-dependent viscoelastic properties of the host rock on the suberitical growth of a dyke from a magma chamber.A theoretical relationship between the velocity of subcritical dyke growth and dyke length is established using a perturbation solution of stress intensity factor at the dyke tip and a viscoelastic crack growth theory in which the temperature-dependent creep properties are taken into account. The temperature field around the dyke is calculated using an analytic *** numerical results for a dyke subcritically propagating from a magma chamber indicate that while the general dyke growth characteristics are similar to those with constant creep properties,the subcritical dyke growth velocity is increased by an order of magnitude by considering the temperature dependence of the creep ***,the subcritical growth duration before the dyke reaches the unstable growth state is significantly shortened.

The May 12,2008 Wenchuan,china Earthquake which measured M = 8.3 according to Chinese Earthquake Administration - CEA(M= 7.9 according to the USGS) directly triggered many landslides,which caused about 20,000 deaths,a quarter of the *** avalanches were among the most destructive landslides triggered by this seismic event,and have killed more people than any other type of landslide in this *** Donghekou rock avalanche,one example of a catastrophic avalanche triggered by the Wenchuan earthquake,occurred in Qingchuan and buried one primary school and 184 houses,resulting in more than 780 deaths,and in addition,caused the formation of two landslide dams,which formed barrier lakes. Combining aerial images(resolution of 0.5 m) with field investigations,this paper lists some parameters of 6. cases in one table,and details source characteristics of six typical *** has been found that most of the long runout rock avalanches have source areas with high relief and steep inclination,causing the debris in the travel courses to *** was also a large amount of saturated Holocene-age loose deposits formed by a river or gully that existed in the travel *** studies indicate that saturated Holocene loose deposits in the travel courses could be the most important factor for the causes of the long runout characteristic of the rock avalanches especially when they traveled over gentle or even flat ground surfaces. Furthermore,the relationships among the relief slope gradient,runout and covered area are investigated, and a threshold line for predicting the maximum horizontal runout distance under certain change in elevation is presented.

Secondary ion mass spectroscopy U-Pb zircon ages and mineralogical,geochemical,and Nd isotopic data are reported for the Tongde picritic dikes in the Yanbian area of the western Yangtze Block,South *** pi critic dikes,which intruded in the ca.820-Ma Tongde complex,are dated at 796.5 *** of the picritic rocks are highly porphyritic (ca.15-35 vol%phenocrysts)with dominant olivine(Fo=82-92)phenocrysts that are high in CaO(up to 0.43 wt%), CrO,and *** the studied rocks are high-Ti and alkaline in composition and exhibit light rare earth element-enriched and"humped"incompatible trace-element patterns,similar to the alkaline basalts within the ocean islands and continental *** highε(T)values between +6.9 and +8.7 indicate that these rocks were derived from an asthenospheric mantle source with inappreciable crustal *** modeling suggests a primary melt of 22.7%MgO for batch melting and 21.4%MgO for fractional *** high MgO content in the modeled primary magmas implies a minimum melt temperature of>1400℃and a mantle potential temperature of 16.0°- 16.0℃.The Tongde picritic dikes were therefore generated by melting of an anomalously hot mantle source with a potential temperature ca.200℃higher than that of the ambient mid-ocean ridge basalt-source mantle,similar to that of modern mantle ***,the Tongde picritic dikes provide solid petrological evidence for the proposed Neoproterozoic mantle plume that led to the breakup of the supercontinent Rodinia.

The Karamay area,situated in the eastern part of Western Junggar,Southern Altaids,contains an ophiolitic melange with ultramafic rocks,gabbro,basalt,chert and limestone,which show typical block-in-matrix structures,and coherent turbidites and *** lithological associations are interpreted as incoherent and coherent series formed in an acaetionary *** the basis of detailed field mapping and analyses of the asymmetry of imbricate thrusts,duplexes,tilted structures,shear band cleavages,and the NW-verging inclined to overturned folds,we conclude that the overall movement in the accretionary complex was *** youngest tuff involved in the deformation contains detrital zircons that have a U-Pb age(LA-MCICP-MS) of 308±7 ***-Ar resistance furnace step-heating of amphibole separates from a diorite dike,which cuts the folded and imbricated rocks in the accretionary prism,yielded a plateau age of 307±2 ***,the age of the deformation in the prism is tightly constrained at 307-308 Ma,implying that the deformation occurred in an extremely short time-span during SE-ward *** contemporaneous occurrence of Baogutu adakite,high-Mg,Sr-enriched and Y-poor dioritic dikes,Miaoergou charnockite,and Maliya mafic rocks,we further suggest the acaetionary complex was cut by near-trench volcanic rocks and plutons possibly due to interaction with a spreading ridge.

SUMMARY The measurement of SKS splitting parameters is widely used for the study of deformation in the upper mantle,but the misalignment of the station horizontal components,for example misorientation of the sensors,may result in false *** this paper,we suggest that the splitting analysis should be repeated with different assumed angles of misalignment. Two criteria can be applied to correct the measurement of the SKS splitting parameters: (1) the horizontal rotating angle should produce the global minimum transverse energy,as determined using the least transverse energy method;(2) there should be consistent results between the least transverse energy method and the minimum eigenvalue *** tests show that the method is suitable for complex anisotropy models,such as two-layer anisotropy.
