As one of the earliest species used in dendrochronological studies, Larix responds sensitively to climate change. In this study, nine larch species and one variety from eleven sites were collected to study the growth characteristics of tree-ring width using dendrochronological methods. Ten residual tree-ring chronologies were developed to analyze their relationships with regional standardized anomaly series by Pearson’s correlation analysis. The results suggest that most of the chronologies had significantly positive correlations with the mean temperature and mean maximum temperature in May. The spring temperature evidently limited the radial growth of the larch species without precipitation control. The largest mean tree-ring width was found in Himalayan Larch in Jilong, whereas Master Larch in Si’er reflected the smallest mean value. Both species presented little climate information in this study. Chinese, Potanin, and Tibetan larches are significantly correlated with climate change, implying a huge potential for climate history reconstruction. The elevation of the sampling sites appears to be an important condition for tree-ring growth of larches responding to climate factors.

The Red Earth deposit around xining, northeastern Tibetan Plateau, has been studied in terms of soil micro-structure, grain-size distribution, major- and trace-element chemistry and magne- tostratigraphy. Field investigations indicate that the Red Earth sequence consists of 25 visually de- finable yellow-brown and weakly-developed soils interbedded with reddish strongly-developed soils, and has a similar structure to the aeolian Red Clay deposit on the Chinese Loess Plateau. Grain-size analysis shows that the Red Earth deposit is very fine-grained with a negligible sand fraction (>63 μm). Thin-section observations under light microscopy show that the deposit has a clayey texture and the coarse fraction (>10 μm) mainly consists of quartz, feldspar and micas. Pyroxene and hornblende were also observed. This mineralogical composition of the coarse fraction is similar to that of the Quaternary loess. In addition, all of the mineral grains are semi angular semi-angular and are gener- ally finer than 63 μm. There is a good agreement between the major and minor trace element chem- istry of loess-soil units and the Red Earth deposit. The REE distributions of the loess-soil and the Red Earth deposit are similar in shape, with enriched LREE and fairly flat HREE profiles and a clear nega- tive Eu anomaly. The geochemical characteristics of the Red Earth deposit are also identical to those of upper continental crust, thus indicating a wind-blown origin. Magnetostratigraphic investigation shows that onset of the Red Earth deposition predates 11.4 Ma BP (13.6 Ma at a nearby site). The distribution of the reported Miocene aeolian loess at Qin’an of the Loess Plateau is still unknown. Our results indicate that this aeolian deposit had extended to the northeastern Tibetan Plateau by at least the middle Miocene. The similarity of the element geochem- istry between the Red Earth deposit and the overlying loess shows that they may have similar sources and dynamic transport system, and

The Tibetan antelope(chiru,Pantholops hodgsoni),a heavily poached species and symbol of the qinghaiTibetan Plateau(QTP),is noted worldwide for its special calving *** species originated in the early Quaternary and it is interesting to know how the following climatic oscillations affected its demographic dynamics in the climate-sensitive *** this study,we analyzed the mitochondrial D-loop region from 312 individuals sampled in all of the six major *** found high rates of gene flow and little genetic differentiation between populations,suggesting that the calving migration may have homogenized the genetic pool of this *** mismatch distribution analyses and coalescent simulations suggested that this species experienced a demographic expansion approximately 600-200 Kyr following the retreat of the large glaciers developed in the QTP at 800-600 Kyr,rather than at the end of the last glacial age,as previously suggested,based on a limited sample *** addition,we found evidence of a chiru population decrease probably related to the human settings at the QTP during the middle Holocene.

Plague,caused by the gram-negative bacterium Yersinia pestis,is a serious and rapidly progressing illness in humans that can be fatal if not treated *** qinghai-Tibet Plateau is the largest area of natural Himalayan marmot(Marmota himalayana) plague foci in china and covers more than 630000 *** County in Gansu Province is a part of this natural focus of plague and was chosen as a study *** study used an ecological niche modeling(ENM) approach to predict the potential distribution of the Himalayan *** and Disaster Monitor Satellite(HJ-1) data was used to investigate environment factors that affect plague host animal *** animal point data from active surveillance was combined with environmental variables from the HJ-1 satellite and other databases,and the models of the potential distribution of Himalayan marmot were produced with the Genetic Algorithm for Rule-Set Production(GARP).The probability of marmot presence was divided into 0-5%,5%-20%,20%-40%,40%-80%,and 80%-100% *** with 80%-100% probability exhibited the greatest potential for the presence of Himalayan *** to the predicted potential distribution of Himalayan marmot in the study area,active surveillance of plague hosts and plague control and prevention could be more efficient.

The mammal's high elevation(hypoxia) adaptation was studied by using the immu-nological and the molecular biological methods to understand the significance of Hsp(hypoxia) ad-aptation in the organic high elevation,through the mammal heat shock response.(1) From high ele-vation to low elevation(natural hypoxia) :Western blot and conventional RT-PCR and real-time fluo-rescence quota PCR were *** difference of heat shock protein of 70(Hsp70) and natural expression of brain tissue of Hsp70 gene was determined in the cardiac muscle tissue among the different elevation mammals(yak) .(2) From low elevation to high elevation(hypoxia induction) :The mammals(domestic rabbits) from the low elevation were sent directly to the areas with different high elevations like 2300,3300 and 5000 m above sea level to be raised for a period of 3 weeks be-fore being slaughtered and the genetic inductive expression of the brain tissue of Hsp70 was deter-mined with *** result indicated that all of the mammals at different elevations possessed their heat shock response ***70 of the high elevation mammal rose abruptly under stress and might be induced to come into being by high elevation(hypoxia) .The speedy synthesis of Hsp70 in the process of heat shock response is suitable to maintain the cells' normal physiological functions under *** Hsp70 has its threshold *** altitude of 5000 m above sea level is the best condition for the heat shock response,and it starts to reduce when the altitude is over 6000 m above sea *** Hsp70 production quantity and the cell hypoxia bearing capacity have their direct ratio.
