Status of study on biological and toxicological effects of nanoscale materials

Because the physical and chemical properties of nanosized materials mostly differ from the existing microsized materials, their potential impacts on human health and the envi-ronment will be topics under the serious discussions in press and in a number of international scientific journals. We analyze and summarize the existing data of the experimental study on the biological activities and adverse effects of nanoscale materials/particles including single wall carbon nanotubes, multi wall carbon nanotubes, titanium oxide and iron powders. Though some biological behaviors of nanoscale materials observed cannot be understood on the basis of the current knowledge, as the existing data are mostly preliminary, it is too early to make some ex-clusive conclusions on biological activities (or the toxicity) of any of nanoscale materials. The experimental techniques, the current topics, and the future research directions for this new re-search field are also discussed.

Recursive Least Squares Estimator with Multiple Exponential Windows in Vector Autoregression

In the parameter tracking of time-varying systems, the ordinary method is weighted least squares with the rectangular window or the exponential window. In this paper we propose a new kind of sliding window called the multiple exponential window, and then use it to fit time-varying Gaussian vector autoregressive models. The asymptotic bias and covariance of the estimator of the parameter for time-invariant models are also derived. Simulation results show that the multiple exponential windows have better parameter tracking effect than rectangular windows and exponential ones.

Prevention and treatment of hepatitis B recurrence after liver transplantation

OBJECTIVE: To study the efficacy of liver transplantation on end-stage hepatitis B related liver diseases, and the prevention and treatment strategies of hepatitis B recurrence after the transplantation. METHODS: The efficacy of combined treatment of lamivudine and hepatitis B immune globulin (HBIG) therapy on 24 patients who had received liver transplantation was retrospectively studied. RESULTS: All the 24 patients with end-stage hepatitis B-related liver diseases treated with lamivudine alone or combined therapy of lamivudine and HBIG showed normal liver function and 21 of them lost hepatitis B virus (HBV) markers. However, the remaining 3 patients became HBsAg positive again soon after liver transplantation. CONCLUSIONS: Liver transplantation is effective for patients with end-stage hepatitis B-related liver diseases. Combined treatment of lamivudine and HBIG may prevent the recurrence of hepatitis B after the operation.

Ectopic ATP synthase in endothelial cells:a novel cardiovascular therapeutic target

The chemokine CXCR4 receptor is over-expressed in a wide variety of *** this study,AMD3100,which was a prototype non-peptide antagonist of CXCR4 receptor,was labeled with;Tc.;Tc-AMD3100 was verified by thin layer radio chromatography（TLRC）.The tumor-localizing properties of;Tc-AMD3100 were evaluated and proved in mice bearing Hep-G2 tumor xenograft.;Tc-AMD3100 was a promising,novel receptor-specific radiopharmaceutical with potential application in the imaging of human tumors.

Evaluation of Impact of Major Causes of Death on Life Expectancy Changes in china,1990-2005

Objective To evaluate the impact of major causes of death on changes of life expectancy in china. Methods Life expectancy was calculated by standard life table techniques using mortality data from the national censuses in 1990 and 2000 and the 1% National Population Sampling Surveys in 1995 and 2005, Mortality data about the major causes of death from VR-MOH were used as reference values to estimate their death proportions of the specific age groups by sex and regions, as well as all-cause mortality and age-specific mortality rates of major causes of death. Decomposition method was used to quantitatively evaluate the impact. Results Three key findings were identified in our study. First, china's health challenge was shifted from diseases related to living conditions to those related to behavior and lifestyle, with rural areas relatively lagged behind urban areas, Second, the impacts of cardiovascular diseases and neoplasm on the middle aged and elderly population were stressed. Third, compared to the urban population, the rural population tended to have increasing mortality of neoplasm and cardiovascular diseases, especially in adults at the age of 15-39 years. Conclusion Further efforts should be made to reduce the incidence of neoplasm and cardiovascular diseases, especially in rural areas, by promoting healthy behavior and lifestyle and providing appropriate therapies for all patients in need.

Interaction between antigen presenting cells and autoreactive T cells derived from BXSB mice with murine lupus

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a typical autoimmune disease involving multiple systems and organs. Ampleevidence suggests that autoreactive T cells play a pivotal role in the development of this autoimmune disorder. This studywas undertaken to investigate the mechanisms of interaction between antigen presenting cells (APCs) and an autoreactiveT cell (ATL1) clone obtained from lupus-prone BXSB mice. ATL1 cells, either before or after γ-ray irradiation, wereable to activate naive B cells, as determined by B cell proliferation assays. Macrophages from BXSB mice were able tostimulate the proliferation of resting ATL1 cells at a responder/stimulator (R/S) ratio of 1/2.5. Dendritic cells (DCs) weremuch more powerful stimulators for ATL1 cells on a per cell basis. The T cell stimulating ability of macrophages and Bcells, but not DCs, was sensitive to γ-ray irradiation. Monoclonal antibodies against mouse MHC-Ⅱ and CD4 were ableto block DC-mediated stimulation of ATL1 proliferation, indicating cognate recognition between ATL1 and APCs. Ourdata suggest that positive feedback loops involving macrophages, B cells and autoreactive T cells may play a pivotalrole in keeping the momentum of autoimmune responses leading to autoimmune diseases.

Molecular chaperones are a family of proteins that were first noticed to exist about 45 years ago from their increased transcription under heat shock *** a result,the regulation of their encoding genes has been subject to extensive *** studies revealed that the biological activities of molecular chaperones can also be effectively modulated at the protein *** ways of modulation so far elucidated include allosteric effect,covalent modification,protein-protein interaction,and con-formational alteration induced by such macro-environmental conditions as temperature and *** latter aspects were reviewed *** here is the importance of such immediate structural alterations that lead to an immediate activity increase,providing the immediate protection needed for the cells to survive the stress conditions.
