Using a global atmosphere-ocean coupled model with the present-day and 14 MaB.P. oceanic topogra- phy respectively, two experiments are implemented to inves- tigate the effect of different locations of Australian Plate on the atmospheric circulation in middle-high latitudes of the Southern Hemisphere. The results show that when Austra- lian Plate lay south at 14 MaB.P., both anticyclone circula- tions in the subtropical oceans and cyclone circulation around 60°-70°S are strengthened. Subtropical highs and circumpolar low pressure appear stronger, which results in much stronger Antarctic Oscillation and shorter period of Antarctic Oscillation Index (AOI) at 14 MaB.P. The rainfall and the surface air temperature also change correspondingly. The precipitation decreases around 40°S and increases around 60°-70°S, and the surface air temperature rises in high latitudes of the South Pacific and descends over the Weddell Sea and its north side. Besides, due to the changes of the temperatures and winds, Antarctic sea ice coverage also changes with its increasing in the Ross Sea and its west re- gions and decreasing in the Weddell Sea.

The LaMn1-xTexO3.δ (x=0.1, 0.2, 0.3. were synthesized using solid-state reaction method for the first time. X-ray photoemission spectrum (XPS) shows that in the samples the Te ions have a valence of Te4+, and Mn3. ions are partly converted into Mn2+ and Mn4+ due to the excess oxygen and Te doping. The magnetotransport associated with Mn2+, Mn3. and Mn4+ was investigated. The experimental results show that the samples are insulator at 0 T when the amount of Mn3. is much larger or less than the sum of Mn2+ and Mn4+; by contrast, the samples display metal to insulator transition with increasing temperature when the amount of Mn3. is close to the sum of Mn2+ and Mn4+. These anomalous magnetotransport behaviors were analyzed in the frame of the double-exchange (DE) mechanism.

The HY-1A satellite is the first oceanic satellite of China. During the winter of 2002-2003. the data of the HY-1A were applied to the sea ice monitoring and forecasting for the Bohai Sea of China for the first time. The sea ice retrieval system of the HY-1 A has been constructed. It receives 1B data from the satellite, outputs sea ice images and provides digital products of ice concentration, ice thickness and ice edge, which can be used as important information for sea ice monitoring and the initial fields of the numeric sea ice forecast and as one of the reference data for the sea ice forecasting verification. The sea ice retrieval system of the satellite is described, including its processes, methods and parameters. The retrieving results and their application to the sea ice monitoring and forecasting for the Bohai Sea are also discussed.

Frontal genesis of moisture atmosphere during the early 2008 persistent freezing-rain event in southern China

From January 10 to February 2, 2008, a severe and persistent freezing-rain event occurred in southern and southwestern China. Here we use an observational analysis to compare the persistent freezing-rain event in the early 2008 with the winter precipita- tion in the late 2007 over south of the Yangtze River (Jiangnan). The persistent freezing-rain event was directly linked to the activity of quasi-stationary front. The gradient of equivalent temperature (ET) can well indicate the frontal genesis of moist atmosphere (moisture front) and its activity as well as its relationship with precipitation belt. The precipitation types (snow and freezing rains) are related to the vertical structure of moisture front. The inversion profile of ET vertical distribution is a typical synoptic condition that caused the freezing-rain event. The horizontal gradient of ET with a criterion of 10℃ / 100 km, which reflects the accumulation and release of atmospheric energy, can be applied to predict the precipitation 5.10 days in advance.

A segment of Mesozoic subduction-accretion zone was inferred across thenortheastern South China Sea at approximately NE45. orientation. Basic evidence includes thefollowing: A belt of peek gross horizontal Bouguer gravity gradient (PGHGBA) is comparable in sizeand intensity to that of the Manila subduction-accretion zone. A belt of high positive magneticanomalies appears to the north and sub-parallel to the PGHGBA, representing the volcanic arcassociated to the subduction zone. The PGHGBA crosses obliquely both Cenozoic structures and presentseafloor topography, indicating a pre-Cenozoic age. The segment is offset left-laterally byNW-running strike-slip faults, in concord with the Mesozoic stress field of South China. Inaddition, the existence of the subduction zone is supported by wide-angle seismic data obtained indifferent years by different institutions. At approximate localities, a north-dipping ramp of Mohosurface is indicated by records of ocean-bottom seismometers, and a strong reflector about 8 kmbeneath the Moho reflector is indicated by both OBS and long-cable seismic records. Theidentification of a segment of Mesozoic subduction zone in NE South China Sea fills nicely the gapof the Great Late Mesozoic Circum SE Asia Subduction-acrretion Zone, which extended from Sumatra,Java, SE Kalimantan to N Palawan, and from Taiwan, Ryukyu to SW Japan.

The salt beds of Lower Tertiary developed in the mid-segment of Kuqa foreland fold belt, northern Tarim basin. They considerably controlled structural deformation of the belt. Ac- cording to the field observation, seismic profile interpretation and drilling data, three different structural styles of supra-salt, intra-salt and sub-salt occurred in the Kuqa foreland fold belt. Su- pra-salt structural styles mainly include thrust faults and fault-related sags. Intra-slat structural styles essentially are salt-pillows, intra-salt faults and folds, and salt weld structures. Sub-salt structural styles mainly consist of imbricated thrust faults, duplex structures, pop-up and fault-related folds. It is indicated that great differences exist among supra-salt, intra-salt and sub-salt structures of Kuqa foreland fold belt. The salt-related structures were formed in the same structural stress field. The dynamic mechanism of the salt-related structures is mainly associated with gravitation, compression and plastic flow of salt beds.

The causal correlation or linkage between the East Asian Monsoon (EAM) intensity and rise/fall of Chinese dynasties recently proposed by high-resolution paleoclimate reconstructions is examined in detail. Aside from many exceptions to the correlation, both instrumental and historical climate records show strong spatial variations of rainfall on annual-to-decadal scales over eastern China. The relationship between rainfall and EAM intensity also exhibits regional disparity. These observations suggest: (1) Tak-ing paleo-proxy records from a single locality in eastern China to imply changes in drought/wetness as to affect the cultural and political history of China is fraught with uncertainty. (2) On annual-to-decadal scales, the thesis that δ18O in speleothems can be used as a proxy for the EAM strength lacks empirical underpinnings.

The characteristic low-frequency oscillation of the sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) of ENSO related regions, Nino 1 + 2, Nino 3. Nino 4 and Nino West, and the Southern Oscillation index (SOI) is analyzed with the method of maximum entropy spectrum. Antarctic sea ice is divided into 4 regions, i. e. East Antarctic is Region Ⅰ (0°-120° E), the region dominated by Ross Sea ice is Region Ⅱ (120° E-120° W), the region dominated by Ross Sea ice is Region Ⅲ (120° W-0°), and the whole Antarctic sea ice area is Region Ⅳ. Also, the month-to-month correlation series of the sea ice with ENSO from contemporary to 5.years lag is calculated. The optimum correlation period is selected from the series. The characteristics and the rules obtained are as follows.1. There are a common 4-years main period of the SSTA of Ninos 1 + 2,3.and 4, a rather strong 4-years secondary period and a quasi-8-years main period of that of Nino West. There are also 1. 5.and 2 to 3.years secondary periods of that of all 4 Nino regions.2. As another indicator of El Nino, the SOI represents the feature of the atmosphere in low latitude area, having a quasi-5.years main period; it also has secondary periods, 1, 1. 5.and 2 to 3.years, among them, the 2 to 3.years one is prominent.3. There is a close relationship between Antarctic sea ice and ENSO event. In the long-range correlation from contemporary up to 60 months of the SSTA in Ninos 1 + 2,3.and 4 and Antarctic sea ice area index, or the time series of 16 correlation coefficients made of each one of the 4 sea ice regions with that of the 4 Nino regions, there is a prominent common characteristic that all correlations are negative from contemporary to 3.-months lag of the SSTA of the 4 Nino regions behind Antarctic sea ice, the optimum correlation periods with the confidences equal to or more than 5.% , 1 % lagging in 13.19, 24-3. month are the most. The correlations of sea ice in Regions Ⅱ , Ⅲ and W with the SSTA of Ninos 3.and 4 are the strongest.

A solvothermal reaction of anhydrous C3.3.l3.and Li3. using benzene as the solvent has been carried out to prepare crystalline carbon nitrides successfully at 3.0}℃ and 5.6 MPa. X-ray diffraction (XRD) indicated that the major part of our brown sample was mainly composed of a-C3.4 and b-C3.4 with lattice parameters of a = 0. 65.nm, c = 0.47 nm for a-C3.4 and a = 0.644 nm, c = 0. 246 nm for b-C3.4, which match the latest ab-initio calculations quite well. The N/C ratio in the powder is about 0.66. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spec-troscopy (XPS) analyses suggested the presence of both sin-gle and double carbon-nitrogen bonds. The kinetics effects of our solvothermal reaction to prepare crystalline carbon ni-trides are also discussed chiefly.
