Sediment cores from desert lakes serve as good records of the frequency and intensity of sandstorms in his- tory. By multi-proxy analysis of grain-size, magnetic suscep- tibility, TOC and Rb/Sr ratio, the paleosandstorm character- istics and lake evolution history in Yulin Area for the past 80 years. are discussed in this article. It is revealed that Hong- jiannao Lake formed in about 192. A.D. and in its initial stage sandstorms were prevalent with three extremes taking place in 1936 A.D., 1939 A.D. and 1941 A.D.. During the ex- pansion period of 195.―1960 A.D., inflow waters to the lake increased sharply and a lot more weathered materials were carried into the lake. The frequency and intensity of sand- storms have reduced a lot since 1960s and the “double peaks” feature of the grain-size frequency curve has changed into the “single peak” feature. Study on the catchment ecol- ogy of the lake shows that the occurrence of sandstorms has been effectively restrained by the forest plantation and water and soil conservation.

以张掖绿洲居民地为研究对象 ,用景观格局分析软件 FRAGSTATS计算了 5.景观格局指标 ,用GIS计算了形状指数、景观类型空间邻接比例、最邻近指数、最近距离以及居民地的耕作半径 ,借鉴聚落地理学中的居民地分布研究方法 ,分析了居民地的空间格局特征及其影响因子。结果表明 :1耕地是张掖绿洲内的景观基质 ,居民地是绿洲内分布最广、斑块数最多的景观类型 ;居民地的平均斑块面积小、形状简单、聚集度高 ,与耕地的空间邻接长度和数目均最高 ,其空间分布类型存在空间差异 ;2.地是影响居民地分布格局的重要因子。缓冲区分析方法可以从理论上确定居民地的耕作半径 ,耕作半径与居民地的空间分布类型紧密相关 ;3居民地到渠系的平均最临近距离为 2.1 5.,75.6%的居民地中有渠系穿过 ;4居民地分布受中心城市——张掖市的影响程度极其明显 ,两者呈指数相关 ;5.观格局分析、居民地分布研究方法和 GIS空间分析方法的有效结合 ,可以较好的反映居民地的空间分布特征及其影响因子的相关性 ;6借鉴聚落地理学的最近邻点指数具有明确的生态含义。

By comparing the oxygen isotopic temperatures recorded by many shallow ice cores from the coastal {2. of Antarctica, this paper presents the special characteristics of the temperature variations over the Antarctic coastal {2. in the past 5. years, 15. years and 2.4} years. In the past 5. years, the isotopic temperatures recorded in the ice cores over different sites on the Antarctic coastal {2. differ greatly. For instance, although increasing isotopic temperatures have been reported for many sites studied, many sites show decreasing trends, the regional regularity in temperature variations is still insignificant. In the past 15. years, the isotopic temperature trends in the coastal {2. of Antarctica show an alternate-distributing pattern. In the past 2.4} years, all the ice cores from the coastal {2. of Antarctica have recorded the so-called Little ice Age (LIA). The above-mentioned spatial characteristics of the temperature variations over the Antarctic coastal {2. are likely to reflect the impacts of the unique Southern Hemisphere atmospheric circulation, the Antarctic Circumpolar Wave (ACW) and the special terrain (such as the large drainage basins) on the coastal {2. of Antarctica. Furthermore, the impacting intensity of the unique Southern Hemisphere atmospheric circulation, the Antarctic Circumpolar Wave and the special terrain differs in terms of the temporal scale of the temperature change.

Carbonaceous aerosol concentrations were determined for samples collected from Muztagh Ata Mountain in western china from December 2.03 to February *** carbon（EC） in total suspended particle（TSP） samples varied from 0.004 to 0.174 μg m-3（average = 0.05. μg m-3） while organic carbon（OC） and carbonate carbon（CC） ranged from 0.12.to 2.17 μg m-3 and below detection to 3.5. μg m-3,*** EC and OC concentrations occurred during the winter-spring seasons while CC concentrations were higher during the warmer *** accounted for～7% of the total carbon（TC = EC + OC + CC） during spring and summer and 11% during autumn and winter;EC was the smallest carbonaceous fraction except in winter when CC was the ***/EC ratios varied from 2.9 to 32.1（average = 10.0）,and strong correlations between OC and EC（R2.0.75.to 0.77） in spring and winter suggest their cycles are coupled,but lower correlations in summer（0.39） and autumn（0.5.） suggest that biogenic emissions and secondary OC become important as temperatures *** of in air parcel back trajectories indicate that about 0.05.μg m-3 EC,0.42.μg m-3 OC,and 0.10 μg m-3 CC were transported from outside *** Ata has EC concentrations nearly as low as those in polar areas;these may represent a background level for inland *** annual EC concentration was fall in the range and close to the lowest bound of EC contents that recovered from ice core drilled in Muztagh Ata glaciers.

Black Carbon Deposition and High Asia Glaciers

EFFECT OF SOIL MOISTURE-ENERGY DISTRIBUTION AND MELTING-FREEZING PROCESSES ON SEASONAL SHIFT IN TIBETAN PLATEAU

Black carbon (BC) is now concerned as one of the most significant factors impacting environment and climate mainly from anthropogenic activities. One aspect of its impacts is that the accelerated snow and ice in nature when BC is deposited in their surfaces. Since 2.00, 18 High Asia glaciers have been surveyed for black carbon deposition 2. times, and numerous snow samples and ice cores have been collected by researchers. However, most of the results were interpreted individually in papers. Here, we assemble the data and discuss the distribution of BC deposition and its impacts on the melting of the glaciers through radiative forcing. We find that BC distribution on the surfaces of High Asia glaciers primarily depends upon their elevations (i.e., higher sites have lower concentrations) and then on regional BC emissions associated with surface melting conditions. BC concentrations in High Asia glaciers are similar to the Arctic and western American mountains but are significantly less than heavy industrialized areas such as northern china. Although Himalayan glaciers, which are important due to their water resources, are directly facing the strong emissions from South Asia, their mean BC is the lowest due to high elevations. A new finding indicated by ice core records suggested great valleys in the eastern Himalayan section are effective pathways for BC entering the Tibetan Plateau and makes increasing BC trends in the local glaciers. On average, BC deposition causes a mean forcing of ～6 W m-2.(roughly estimated 5. of the total forcing) in High Asia glaciers and therefore may not be a major factor impacting the melting of most glaciers.

As one of the major projects of GAME (GEWEX Asian Monsoon Experiment), the GAME\|Tibet aimed to mainly examine the energy and water cycle in Tibetan Plateau and its effects on Asian monsoon. In this paper, based on the in\|situ high\|resolution observation data of GAME\|Tibet, the soil energy\|moisture distribution and the melting\|freezing progresses and their effects on seasonal shift were preliminarily *** soil energy\|water distribution and freezing\|melting processes varied at different sites in northern part of Tibetan Plateau. The temporal and spatial variation of the soil moisture content is more complex than that of temperature. The soil moisture content increased with depth in certain layers but decreased in other layers. The freezing and melting processes and the temperature distribution were largely influenced by the existence of higher soil moisture content layer. During summer monsoon, the soil moisture at 10cm at all sites is relatively high, but the spatial difference existed. Generally speaking, the shallow layers start to freeze in October and to melt from April at all sites, with about 6 months frozen period. However, the beginning time of freezing\|melting and frozen period varied at different sites.
