Based on the theories and methods of cartography on spatial pattern and temporal evolution in Geo-information Tupu (Carto-methodology in Geo-information, CMGI) and the quantitative measurements of pattern and process in landscape ecology, the methodology of landscape information Tupu in studying the swing process of the Yellow River (YR) over the Yellow River Delta (YRD) during 1855― 2000 has been demonstrated. The main content includes: (1) methodology of landscape information Tupu; (2) evolution process Tupu of YR rump channels; (3) evolution process Tupu of the 7 pieces of subdeltas in YRD during 1855―2000; (4) landscape information Tupu of the modern YRD and the current YRD; (5) landscape information Tupu of YR rump channels on the 7 pieces of subdeltas during 1855―2000; and (6) corridor-matrix landscape information Tupu by YR swings. The methodology of landscape information Tupu here is still primary but we hope that it could provide a new tool for exploring an integrated research on spatiotemporal approaches for landscape "pattern and process".

Ancient Changjiang channel system in the East china Sea continental shelf during the last glaciation

Based on the data of high-resolution seismic profiles, an ancient river channel sys-tem of the last glaciation occurred along the Zhedong and Xihu depression in the southeast of Hupijiao rise. The distribution of the channel fill system shows that the ancient Changjiang River went through the Changjiang depression into the low land plain of the outside continental shelf during the low sea level cycle of the last glaciation. The big channel fill into Okinawa Trough is not found due to the depletion of the river kinetic energy in the low land plain. The river discharge dispersal was of an important role to the dilution of the northern Okinawa Trough sea at that time. Six ancient river channel systems (A―F), which are main distributaries of ancient Changjiang in the East china Sea continental shelf during the last glaciation, may be buried off the modern Changjiang estuary. The distribution of these channels coincides with the zonal elevations in the sea floor.

Calcium pretreatment increases thermotolerance of Laminaria japonica sporophytes

Calcium is a secondary messenger in plant signaling, and its concentration changes spatially and temporally during the course of heat stress. In the present study, potassium antimonate was used to visualize calcium localization in blades of a marine macroalga, the juvenile Laminaria japonica sporophytes under heat stress (25 °C). Result showed that loosely bound calcium was mainly distributed on the cell wall under normal conditions (10 °C), and flowed into the cytoplasm when exposed to heat. The simutaneous assay on the antioxidant system changes was performed. Oxidative damage, as measured by generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) malondialdehyde (MDA) content, increased significantly during heat stress, and calcium pretreatment alleviated oxidative damage. The assay on the activities of six antioxidant enzymes demonstrated that their enzymatic activities were inhibited when exposed to heat stress, but Ca2+ pretreatment effectively attenuated the inhibition. Results in the present study inferred that calcium homeostasis plays an essential role in L. japonica sporophyte when exposed to heat, and calcium pretreatment could improve its thermo-tolerance.

Pseudopleuronectes yokamae (Günther) is one of the most important economic fish species in the genus living specially in the northwest Pacific, and is distributed in the southern area of the far east sea of Russia, Japan, Korea, the Huanghai Sea, the Bohai Sea and the northern area of the East china Sea. Genetic variability of half-smooth tongue sole Cynoglossus semilaevis populations using microsatellite markers

Ten highly variable microsatellite loci were performed in order to evaluate the genetic variability of wild and hatchery samples of half-smooth tongue sole Cynoglossu＇s semilaevis. A group of 200 genotypes belonging to four wild samples, Laizhou （LZ）, Weihai （WH）, qingdao （QD）, Rizhao （RZ） and one hatchery sample, Mingbo （MB）, were screened. All of the： ten microsatellite loci screened in this study showed marked polymorphism. A total of 70 different alleles were observed over all loci. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 4.2 to 1006 the average of expected and observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.67 to 0.82, and from 0：77 to0.87 respectively. A total of 10, 16, 10, 11 and 5 unique alleles each were found in LZ, WH~ QD：RZ and MB populations. The effective number of alleles varied from 2.87 for HSTS_7 to 6.83 for HSTS_h. The number of average genotypes ranged from 6.0 for HSTS a to 15.4 for HSTS_h： As compared with the wild populations, the hatchery population, MB, showed significant genetic changes such as fewer alleles per locus （P〈0.05）, a smaller number of low frequency alleles （P〈0.05）, a small number of unique alleles and a small number of genotypes （P〈0.05）, all indicative of a reduction in genetic diversity.

An experimenal analysis for the impact of 2D variation assimilation of satellite data on typhoon track simulation

A series of test simulations are performed to evaluate the impact of satellite-derived meteorological data on numerical typhoon track prediction. Geostationary meteorological satellite (GMS-5) and NOAA's TIROS operational vertical sounder (TOVS) observations are used in the experiments. A two-dimensional variation assimilation scheme is developed to assimilate the satellite data directly into the Penn State-NCAR nonhydrostatic meteorological model (MM5). Three-dimensional objective analyses fields based on T213 results and routine observations are employed as the background fields of the initialization. The comparisons of the simulated typhoon tracks are also carried out, which correspond respectively to the initialization scheme with two-dimensional variation (2D - Var), three-dimensional observational nudging and direct assimilation of satellite data. It is found that, comparing with the experiments without satellite data assimilation, the first two assimilation schemes lead to significant improvements on typhoon track prediction. Track errors reduce by 18 % at 12 h for 2D - Var and from about 16 % at 24 h to about 35 % at 48 h for observational nudging. The simulated results based on assimilating different kinds of satellite data are also compared.

The sea/land breeze in the northern coastal area of Shandong Peninsula

In this paper the seasonal variation and structural characteristics of the sea/ land breeze in the northern coastal area of' Shandong Peninsula are studied in two ways: one is the analysis of the observed wind data, and the other is numerical simulation and experiments. Firstly, the hour to hour wind data through the year 1984 at Longkou meteorological Station and Yantai Oceanographic Station are analysed through energy spectra and hodograph. It is revealed from the analysed results that the effects of the sea/ land breeze in the area are notable in spring, summer and fall, especially in May. However, in winter the effects of sea / land breeze are not obvious. because the cold noitherly is prevailing. Secondly, a two-dimensional non- linear model of primitive equations is used to study the sea / land breeze circulation in May in the area. The results of numerical simulation consist basically with the analysed results of the observed sea / land breeze. A reasonable theoretical structure of the sea / land breeze circulation is displayed, and a new undeerslanding of the developmental mechanism of land breeze circulation in that area is obtained. Lastly, numerical experiments about the effects of large scale wind and temperature fields upon the sea / land breeze circulation are performed.

The reliability of the wind speed, air temperature and humidity observed on ship

Using data of wind speed, air temperature and humidity recorded simultaneously on board and the on the small buoy, the latter is considered as criterion, the paper has discussed the influence of the body of ship on the meteorological data. Owing to the disturbance and the influence of heat radiation from the body of ship, the temperature observed on board is higher by about 2癈 than on buoy, and the relative humidity lower by 10%, wind speed observed on the mast is not only irregular but is less than that on the buoy, the error of which would be 3 m/s. The paper therefore suggests that the data observed on the deck in daytime, especially in fair weather after midday, is less reliable. The reliability of data decreases simultaneously with the increase of the body of ship in *** addition, this paper also proposes that more reasonable observing points chosen on board should be the key to obtain reliable data. The effect of unstable inertia-gravity wave on the occurrence and the development of typhoon and tropical cyclone

In this paper,the analysis of the occurrence and the development of typhoon and tropical cyclone is made with the unstable theory of wave. The result indicates that the primary wave is the unstable inertia-gravity wave in the process of the occurrence and the deveJopmant of typhoon and tropical cyclone: The existence of the deep moist layer and the heating by moisture condensation can impel and intensify the unstability of the wave and is favourable for the reduction of the wave energy dispersion, therefore, it is good for the formation and the development of typhoon and tropical cyclone, and also can slow down the wave speed. Besides, the condition that the change of the specific volume of the basic state with pressure is less than that of adiabatic state may also lead to the wave unstability, thus may have certain effect on the occurrence and the development of typhoon and tropical cyclone.

Sea level pressure (SLP) anomalies over the southern high latitudes associated with the Indian Ocean Dipole Mode (IOD) are *** correlation and composite analysis depict,for the first time,the seasonal spatial variability in the relationship of SLP field in Southern Ocean with *** suggest that the IOD signal exists in the southern high latitudes and it is enhanced in boreal autumn,an active season of *** interannual to subdecadal timescales,the spatial teleconnection pattern exhibits a wavenum-ber-3 pattern around the circumpolar Southern Ocean and the lead-lag correlation analysis shows that there are about 3 months of SLP anomalies in southern high latitudes lagging IOD,which indicates that the response time is almost instantaneous.
