AIM: In an attempt to pharmacologically characterize the Chinese antihypertensive drug, tetrandrine, we observed in rat-tail arteries, an unusual contraction in tissues that were stimulated with high [KCI] and not those stimulated with phenylephrine. The characteristics of this contraction were studied. METHODS: Segments of perfused ventral rat-tail arteries (RTA) were contracted with a depolarizing concentration (120 mmol/L) of KCI or with phenylephrine (3.0 umol/L). At peak contraction, they were exposed to tetrandrine (40 umol/L), which caused marked relaxation in each case. Washing the RTA led to an unusual, slowly-declining contraction, hereafter referred to as tetrandrine-induced contraction (TIC) which was also observed when the tissues were exposed to 80 umol/L, but not 10 umol/L or 20 umol/L of tetrandrine. RESULTS: Pretreatment with phentolamine (non-selective a-adrenoceptor antagonist), prazosin (selective aradrenoceptor antagonist) or 6-hydroxydopamine (for denervation), but not rauwolscine

The temperature distribution in the tool, chip and workpiece was studied during the orthogonal cuttingprocess Under several different cutting conditions. The temperature distribution is calculated by the finite differencemethod. and the variation of the material properties with temperature was taken was taken into account The results obtained arecoincident with both previous published results and experimental measurements.

Organic Light Emitting Devices (OLED) have attracted much attention recently, for their applications in futureFlat Panel Displays and lighting products. However, their fast degradation remained a major obstacle to theircommercialization. Here we present a brief summary of our studies on both extrinsic and intrinsic causes for the fastdegradation of OLEDs. In particular, we focus on the origin of the dark spots by 'rebuilding' cathodes, which confirms thatthe growth of dark spots occurs primarily due to cathode delamination. In the meantime, we recapture the findings from thesearch for suitable OLED packaging materials, in particular polymer composites, which provide both heat dissipation andmoisture resistance, in addition to electrical insulation.

Space-mapping (SM) technique is applied for the modeling and design optimization of photonic devices. A mapping is established between the parameter spaces of the fast but approximate coarse model and the time-intensive yet accurate fine model. Two different applications of the SM techniques, i.e., design optimization and design modeling of photonic devices, are illustrated by way of examples.

Semi-stable distributions, in classical probability theory, are characterized as limiting distributions of subsequences of normalized partial sums of independent and identically distributed random variables. We establish the noncommutative counterpart of semi-stable distributions. We study the characterization of noncommutative semi-stability through free cumulant transform and develop the free semi-stability and domain of semi-stable attraction in free probability theory.

Theoretical studies of some controlled source electromagnetic methods, especially the horizontal coaxial magnetic dipole dipole and horizontal collinear electric dipole dipole electromagnetic methods, which are capable of accurately measuring the relatively low conductivity of the seafloor were reviewed. Marine electromagnetic instrumentations, especially the time domain horizontal magnetic dipole dipole system and horizontal electric dipole dipole system which have been designed and constructed in the Geophysics Division of the university of Toronto, were provided with applications to geotechnical studies on the shelf and deep ocean surveys near the mid ocean ridges.

A new method for solving the velocity analysis of a mechanism is presented. Central to the method is how to convert the probem of velocity analysis of a mechanism to one of static analysis. Application of the method to certain practical problems has advantages compared to conventional methods for both graphical and analytical solutions. For brevity an example of a planar mechanism only is presented.

A new method of both analysis and graphics is presented for solving the problem of velocity analysis of a spatial four-bar mechanism. Central to the method is how to use the principle of virtual forces equilibrium system connected with the principle of virtual velocity to solve the velocity analysis of a mechanism. The method is accurate in principle and much simpler than the conventional method. It can be applied to both planar and spatial mechanisms. For brevity an example of a spatial mechanism only is presented.
