The density functional theory (DFT) with a minimal number of parameters allows a very successful phenomenological description of ground state properties of nuclei all over the periodic table. The recent developments on the application of the covariant density functional theory as well as its extensions by the group in Beijing for a series of interests and hot topics in nuclear astrophysics and nuclear structure are reviewed, including the rapid neutron-capture process, Th/U chronometer, and isospin corrections for superallowed β transitions.

Taking the single neutron levels of 12C in the Fermi sea as examples,the optimization of the imaginary time step(ITS) evolution with the box size and mesh size for the Dirac equation is *** the weakly bound states,in order to reproduce the exact single-particle energies and wave functions,a relatively large box size is *** long as the exact results can be reproduced,the ITS evolution with a smaller box size converges faster,while for both the weakly and deeply bound states,the ITS evolutions are less sensitive to the mesh ***,one can find a parabola relationship between the mesh size and the corresponding critical time step,i.e.,the largest time step to guarantee the convergence,which suggests that the ITS evolution with a larger mesh size allows larger critical time step,and thus can converge faster to the exact *** conclusions are very helpful for optimizing the evolution procedure in the future self-consistent calculations.

Soils in the Knersvlakte are particularly prone to crusting and have lower inherent infiltrability than other soils across western southern africa. Micromorphological techniques were used to examine the structure and porosity of soil crusts in the Knersvlakte to ascertain why crusting is so intense in this region. Quantile regression using boundary lines was employed to examine the relationships between infiltrability and soil properties for all samples （n = 67）. This analysis showed that infiltrability is potentially maximal at low water- dispersible ＇clay plus silt＇ content and low silt content （r^2 = 0.72 and 0.64; respectively, n = 67）（Figure 2）. The strength of crusts, pH, EC, clay mineralogy, and water-dispersible clay, silt and ＇clay plus silt＇ content were compared, and a pore analysis using optical microscopy was undertaken on images of six soil thin sections （n = 6）（circular and parallel polarizers）. Pore analysis was further undertaken on five horizontal slices of equal dimensions taken through each soil thin section. The porosity samples with low infiltrability （〈 100 mm·hr^-1, n = 4） had greater crust strength, lower porosity （both total and in the least porous slice） and greater water-dispersible ＇day plus silt＇ and silt content than the porosity samples with high infiltrability （〉 100mm·hr^-1, n = 2）. The porosity samples with low infiltrability showed a trend of lower pH and greater water dispersible clay percentage. Porosity varied within the porosity samples due to the presence of dense clay/silt bands （〈 0.5 mm in width） with relatively few air vesicles. The porosity samples with horizontal slices of low porosity （but large numbers of air vesicles） had low infiltrability, while those without slices of low porosity （and relatively few air vesicles） had high infiltrability. We conclude that the intense crusting and resultant low infiltrability of soils in the Knersvlakte appears to be related to the formation of thin, dense clay/silt bands in the

AIM: To examine if estrogen can affect the immune response at the dendritic cells (DCs) level in rats with experi- mental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). METHODS: Lewis rats were immunized with inoculum containing MBP68-86. DCs were derived from spleen monocytes of EAE rats with IL-4 and GM-CSF in presence of 17β- estradiol (E2). Nitric oxide (NO) was detected by Griess reagent. The surface markers and cytokines production of DCs were shown by flow cytometry. DCs were cocultured with MBP-specific T cells, [3.]-TdR incoportation was used to reveal the antigen presentability, the supernatant of the coculture were collected to examine the cytokines secretion by ELISA. RESULTS: E2 activated DCs by accelerating the maturation process characterized by upregulation of MHC II and costimulating molecule B7-1, B7-2, drastic high expression of CD40. IFN-γ–produc- ing DCs were also elevated without any alteration of IL-10. Estradiol-treated DCs (E2-DCs) secreted more NO in the culture supernatant. By contrast, E2-DCs showed decreased antigen presentation ability with reduced secretion of IFN-γ but no alteration of IL-10 in the coculture with T cells. CONCLUSION: Estrogen can affect the differentiation, maturation and function of DCs from EAE rats, which may be attributed to its protection against EAE and the remission of multiple sclerosis patients in pregnancy.

AIM: To investigate the changes of function of large conductance of calcium-activated potassium channels (BKCa channels) in thoracic aortic smooth muscle cells in early stage of streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic C57BL/6J mice. METHODS: Vascular muscle tension in the isolated thoracic aortic rings of mice was compared, and the role of BKCa channels in relaxation of isolated mice thoracic aortic rings induced by acetylcholine (ACh) was determined. Meanwhile, single vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) were isolated by collagenase, and BKCa currents were recorded by patch-clamp single channel recording technique in symmetric high potassium solution. RESULTS: Tetraethylammonium (TEA) 1 mmol/L, a selective calcium-activated potassium channel blocker, caused significant rightward shift in the concentration-response curves of ACh in the isolated thoracic aortic rings of diabetic mice and pD2 value of ACh-induced relaxation was decreased notably after TEA treatment [(6.3.0.4) vs (6.9±0.5), n=10 rings from 7 mice, P4±0.15) vs (6.5±0.5), n=7 rings from 6 mice, P>0.05]. Furthermore, conductance of BKCa channels in single thoracic aortic smooth muscle cells was decreased [(199±15) pS, n=10 cells from 7 mice vs (266±11) pS, n=12 cells from 6 mice, P3.±98), n=6 cells from 6 mice, P<0.05]. CONCLUSION: The opening of BKCa channels was increased in thoracic aortic smooth muscle cells in the early stage of STZ-induced diabetic C57BL/6J mice by reducing mean closed time, but the conductance of BKCa channels was decreased.

We determined the variation tendency of viscosity (η) at various solids load- ing (α) for 3.-TZP suspension as a function of dispersant concentration (Cw) using vis- cosity measurement, measured the diameter of particles as a function of Cw in very dilute suspension using light scattering method, and obtained the surface features of the sedi- ment of suspension with different Cw using SEM. We also discussed the influence of the microstructure of adsorbed polymer layers on particles and their interactions in the dis- persing medium on the stability of suspension. Then two different stable states and two different unstable states for 3.-TZP suspension were given. Accordingly, the (Cw, η), (Cw, α), and (α, η) two-parameter, and (Cw, α, η) three-parameter stability maps were con- structed. Based on the DLVO theory calculations, the dispersant concentration, particle distance (r), and interparticle potential energy (VT) maps with various solids loading for 3.-TZP aqueous suspension were also constructed. In (Cw, r) two-parameter coordinate system, the stable motion region map for particles was established. The Cw, α, and VT,max (the highest potential energy) surface of the potential barrier map was obtained through calculation and simulation on the basis of the surfaces of Cw, r, VT maps introduced above. The (Cw, α) two-parameter stability map was then obtained from the Cw, α, VT,max map. The results showed that this theoretical map can qualitatively prove the experimentally obtained results—the existence of different dispersed states of particles in suspension system and the variation tendency of suspension stability with changing each parame- ter—were reasonable.

Using the slow highly charged ions 129 Xe q+ (q=25,26,27;initial kinetic T0≤4.65 keV/a.u.)to impact Au surface,the Au atomic Mαcharacteristic X-ray spectrum is *** result shows that as long as the charge state of projectile is high enough,the heavy atomic characteristic X-ray can be effectively excited even though the incident beam is very weak(nA magnitude),and the X-ray yield per ion is in the order of 10-8and increases with the kinetic energy and potential energy of *** measuring the Au Mα-X-ray spectra,Au atomic N-level lifetime is estimated at about 1.3.×10-18s based on Heisenberg uncertainty relation.

Glycomics comparison was carried out by screening melanoma serum biomarkers between C57 mice with and without B16 implanted. O-glycans were released from 10 μL sera by β-elimination, purified by Graphitized Carbon Cartridge Solid Phase Extraction (GCC-SPE) and analyzed by MALDI-QIT-TOF-MS. MS raw data were acquired and exported by Launchpad software. MATLAB was then applied for further data analysis. 10 Glycans were considered to have stable changes after B16 implantation and 5 of them were under structural analysis via MS/MS.
