The Structure of Narrow-Line Region in LINERs

Low-ionization nuclear emission regions （LINERs） are present in a large fraction of local galaxies, while their connection to the more luminous active galactic nuclei （AGN） remains elusive. We analyze the narrow band images obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope （HST） in Hα＋[NII] and/or [OIII] band for 23 LINERs and low luminosity Seyfert galaxies in the sample of the Palomar Optical Spectroscopic Survey of nearby galaxies in an attempt to resolve the structure of Narrow Emission Line Regions （NLRs） of these objects. In all cases, NLRs are well resolved and their morphology differs from object to object. Clumps, linear structure, spiral arms or a ring are detected in a large fraction of the objects, while there is no significant difference between Seyfert galaxies and LINERs. We find that the NLR size and the narrow line luminosity are strongly correlated for both LINERs and low luminosity Seyfert galaxies, and that the size of Ha＋[NII] emission line region scales with Ha luminosity as RNLR ∝ LHα^0.44＋0.06, consistent with an extension of the NLR size-luminosity relation defined for luminous Seyfert galaxies and quasars, to two orders of magnitude lower in luminosity and to lower activity levels. Our results suggest that NLRs in LINERs are similar to those of Seyfert galaxies, and they are powered by the central active galactic nucleus.

Schistosomes cause schistosomiasis disease which severely threatens human health. Little is known about the functions of EF-hand domain containing schistosomes tegument proteins other than as an-tigens. More possible functions of these tegument proteins were investigated with in silico analyses including protein-protein functional interaction,site-specific variation and glycosylation modification. The analysis results suggested that schistosomes could actively modulate host immune responses for its own favor through functional interactions with host proteins with immunomodulatory function,and passively regulate host immune responses through sequence variation under positive selection and glycosylating the recognition sites of host immune attack. In addition,the analysis of the C-terminal domain of these tegument proteins indicated that they could assist schistosomes in escaping host immune attacks through inhibiting chemotaxis and non-complement fixing antibody (IgG4) responses. In summary,our results suggested that these tegument antigen proteins could assist schistosomes in escaping and modulating host immune responses for self-protection during the process of host-para-site interaction.

TNF recepter-55 is the main mediator of TNF-induced apoptosis. TNF receptor-75-dependent induction or enhancement of cytotoxicity has been explained by intracellular signaling, 'ligand passing' , or induction of endogenous TNF. To study the function of human TNF receptor-75 (hTR75) and the interaction between human TNF receptor-55 (hTR55) and hTR75 in hTNFa-induced cytotoxicity, HEp-2 cells were transfected with bicistronic expression vector of hTR75 and its deletion mutants genes. hTNFa-induced cytotoxicity was determined by crystal violet colorimetric method. The expression of hTR75 and its deletion mutants in HEp-2 cells was demonstrated by RT-PCR and indirect ELISA. We found that the overexpressed hTR75 could significantly increase the susceptibility of HEp-2 cells to hTNFa which especially required TRAF2 binding site. hTR75 could not only mediate partial hTNFa-induced cytotoxicity independently but also fulfill an accessory role in enhancing or synergizing hTR55-mediated cytotoxicity

The equation of wave propagation in a circular chamber with mean flow is obtained. Computational solution based on finite element method is employed to determine the transmission loss of expansive chamber. The effect of the mean flow and geometry (length of expansion chamber and expansion ratio)on acoustic attenuation performance is discussed, the predicted values of transmission loss of expansion chamber without and with mean flow are compared with those reported in the literature and they agree well. The accuracy of the prediction of transmission loss implies that finite element approximations are applicable to a lot of practical applications.

Semantic search is a key issue in integration of heterogeneous biological databases. In this paper, we present a methodology for implementing semantic search in BioDW, an integrated biological data warehouse. Two tables are presented: the DB2GO table to correlate Gene Ontology (GO) annotated entries from BioDW data sources with GO, and the semantic similarity table to record similarity scores derived from any pair of GO terms. Based on the two tables, multifarious ways for semantic search are provided and the corresponding entries in heterogeneous biological databases in semantic terms can be expediently searched.

We study the relevance of nucleon pairs with higher spins, in addition to spin-zero and spin-two pairs (i.e., S D pairs), in low-lying states of even-even Xe nuclei. By including those higher-spin pairs in our configuration, we recalculate energy level schemes, elec trical quadrupole moments, magnetic moments and electric quadrupole transition rates, for low-lying states of even-even 128-142Xe nuclei. The agreement between our calculated results and the experimental data is substantially improved in comparison with previous studies.

Removal Behaviors of Different SiC Ceramics during Polishing

Comparative experiments were conducted to reveal the removal behaviors of three kinds of silicon carbide （SIC） ceramics during polishing and the effects of ceramic microstructure on the surface quality were also reported. Experimental results show that the second phase in SiC ceramics plays an important role in the surface quality when its size is large enough. The surface quality is enslaved to the formation of steps at interfaces between second phase and SiC matrix that results from different elastic modulus and hardness between two phases. Under 3 μm abrasive grains polishing condition, different SiC ceramics show different removal mechanisms. With decreasing abrasive grain size, all of different SiC ceramics exhibit a ductile removal mode, which decreases surface roughness efficiently.

The genetic requirements for the transcription of glnA,encoding the major glutaminesynthetase in a rifamycin SV-producing Amycolatopsis mediterranei strain,U32,were *** experiments showed that the promoter of U32 glnA （pglnA） was likely to have two transcriptioninitiation sites:P1and P2,located 157 and 45 nucleotides （nt） upstream of the translational start codon,*** mobility shift and DNase I footprinting analyses revealed a 30 bp cis-element locatedat 45 to 75 nt downstream of P1,or 38 to 68 nt upstream of *** sequence of the cis-element displayedhigh similarity to the corresponding regions of pglnA from Streptomyces coelicolor and *** as a reporter gene,the expression levels of U32 pglnA and its deletion derivatives under differentnitrogen-source conditions were analyzed by detecting the catechol dioxygenase activities in ***54,*** J508 and *** FS10 （glnR mutant）.These in vivo studies showed that theactivation of U32 pglnA in *** required GlnR,and its binding to the U32 pglnA was furtherconfirmed by the gel mobility shift *** and heterologous expression of the U32 glnR allowed usto detect the in vitro interaction between the U32 GlnR and the corresponding pglnA *** shown by in vivo glnR inactivation and complementation indicated that GlnR is essential for theactive transcription of glnA in U32.
