Characteristics of echolocating bats’auditory stereocilia length, compared with other mammals

The stereocilia of the Organ of Corti in 4 different echolocating bats, Myotis adversus, Murina leuco-gaster, Nyctalus plancyi (Nyctalus velutinus), and Rhinolophus ferrumequinum were observed by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Stereocilia lengths were estimated for comparison with those of non-echolocating mammals. The specialized lengths of outer hair cells (OHC) stereocilia in echolocating bats were shorter than those of non-echolocating mammals. The specialized lengths of inner hair cells (IHC) stereocilia were longer than those of outer hair cells stereocilia in the Organ of Corti of echolocating bats. These characteristics of the auditory stereocilia length of echolocating bats represent the fine architecture of the electromotility process, helping to adapt to high frequency sound and echolocation.

We collected data on sleeping site use from 2 groups of white-headed langurs(Trachypithecus leucocephalus)living in Fusui Nature Reserve,China between August 2007 and July *** information was used to test several hypotheses regarding ultimate causes of sleeping site use in this ***-headed langurs slept either in caves(17 sites)or on a cliff ledge(1 site).They used all sleeping sites repeatedly,and reused some of them on consecutive nights;3 nights was the longest consecutive use of any one sleep *** suggest that langurs use sleeping sites to make approach and attack by predators difficult,and to increase their own familiarity with a location so as to improve chances for ***’ cryptic behaviors with an increased level of vigilance before entering sleeping sites may also help in decreasing the possibility of detection by *** 1 spent more sleeping nights in the central area of their territory than expected;in contrast,group 2 spent more sleeping nights in the periphery of their territory,which overlaps with that of another groups,than *** position of sleeping site relative to the last feeding site of the day and the first feeding site of the subsequent morning indicated a strategy closer to that of a multiple central place forager than of a central place *** results suggest that territory defense and food access may play an important role in sleeping site use of white-headed langurs.

Some Experiments on The Silkworm During The Various Stages of Its Life History

Introduction The silkworm, owing to its economic bearings, had been under domestication since the beginning of (?)ivilization of this country. The species reared through numberless generations by sericulturists maintains its existence chiefly through the aid of artificial attendance. Under the influence of guardianship by man, its capacity of independent living in natural environment has practically disappeared, and its responses to various stimuli vary from being comparatively tardy to sluggish, which features bring the silkworm in a great contrast with most of other insects, which live independently and flourish in nature. The warming of Earth owing to human activities is resulting in an episode of mass extinction. If global warming is not abated quickly, up to one-fourth of the species on our planet will face extinction in only 35 years. The loss of biodiversity is more than just many species disappearing. It could signal the beginning of the collapse of our ecosystems because the loss of one species can trigger a domino effect. Among vertebrates, the so-called cold bloodied species--fishes, amphibians and reptiles--are the most threatened groups.

Important population viability analysis parameters for giant pandas(Aliuropoda melanoleuca)

Population viability analysis(PVA) is a tool to evaluate the risk of extinction for endangered species and aid conservation *** quality of PVA output is dependent on parameters related to population dynamics and life-history;however,it has been difficult to collect this information for the giant panda(Aliuropoda melanoleuca),a rare and endangered mammal native to China,confined to some 30 fragmented habitat *** giant pandas are long-lived,mature late,have lower reproductive rates,and show little sexual dimorphism,obtaining data to perform adequate PVA has been ***,we develop a parameter sensitivity index by modeling the dynamics of six giant panda populations in the Minshan Mountains,in order to determine the parameters most influential to giant panda *** data shows that the giant panda populations are most sensitive to changes in four female parameters:initial breeding age,reproductive rate,mortality rate between age 0 and 1,and mortality rate of *** parameter sensitivity index strongly correlated with initial population size,as smaller populations were more sensitive to changes in these four *** model suggests that demographic parameters of females have more influence on the results of PVA,indicating that females may play a more important role in giant panda population dynamics than ***,reintroduction of female individuals to a small giant panda population should be a high priority for conservation *** findings form a technical basis for the coming program of giant panda reintroduction,and inform which parameters are crucial to successfully and feasibly monitoring wild giant panda populations.
