Total of 33 species of dinoflagellate cysts were discovered from surface sediment in the sea region of Guangxi, among them 12 cyst types (Diplopsalopsis sp. 1, D. sp. 2, D. sp. 3, Cochlodinium sp., Protoperidinium sp. 1, P. sp. 2, P. compressum, Scrippsiella sp. 1, S. sp. 2, Alexandrium sp. 1, A. sp. 2, A. sp. 3) were first reported from the South china Sea. And one cyst type (Cochlodinium sp.) was first reported in the world. Scrippsiella trochoidea is the dominant species in this area, accounting for 45% of all the cysts. There are 2 cysts of toxic dinoflagellate (Alexandrium tamarensis and Gymnodinium catenatum) But there is no relationship between cyst number and grain size distribution.

Drifting buoys, satellite altimetry and satellite-derived sea surface thermal images are used to identify the existence of a large cold-core, cyclonic Kuroshio frontal eddy between Hengchun Peninsula and Lanyu, southeast off Taiwan Island around March 1996. The cold eddy accompanies an offshore meander of the Kuroshio near Lanyu, about 70 km and 100 km in horizontal zonal and meridional scales, respectively. The cold eddy is different from normal Kuroshio frontal eddies for its persisting of about 2 months near Lanyu. Supporting evidence suggests that the Kuroshio intruded into the South china Sea (SCS, hereafter) forming a loop-like structure during the persisting period of the cold eddy and that similar eddies occur occasionally in the same location. Compared with the corresponding studies in the Gulf of Mexico, it is suggested that Lanyu cold eddies are SCS analogues of Tortugas eddies found in the southern Straits of Florida. Overshooting of the meandering Kuroshio when it leaves the SCS and effects from conservation of potential vorticity are the possible mechanism of eddy genesis.

Based on the wind and hydrographic data obtained by R/V Xiangyanghong 14 during June of 1999, the currents in the Huanghai Sea and East china Sea are computed by the three dimensional non-linear diagnostic, semidiagnostic models and prognostic in the a coordinate. The computed results show that the density and velocity fields and so on have been adjusted when time is about 3 days, namely the solution of semidiagnostic calculation is obtained. In the northwest part of the computed region, the Huanghai coastal current flows southeastward, and then it flows out the computed region south of Cheju Island. In the west side of the southern part of the computed region, there is other current, which is mainly inshore branch of Taiwan Warm Current, and it flows cyclonically and turns to the northeast. In the region north of the above two currents, there is a cyclonic eddy southwest of Cheju Island, and it has characteristics of high density and low temperature. There is an offshore branch of Taiwan Warm Current in the west side of the Kuroshio, and it makes a cyclonic meander, then flows northeastward. The Kuroshio in the East china Sea is stronger, and flows northeastward. Its maximum horizontal velocity is 108.5 cm/s at the sea surface, which is located at the northern boundary, and it is 106.1 cm/s at 30 m level, 102.2 cm/s at 75 m level and 85.1 cm/s at 200 m level, respectively, which are all located at the southern boundary. Comparing the results of diagnostic calculation with those of semidiagnostic and prognostic calculations indicates that the horizontal velocity field agrees qualitatively, and there is a little difference between them in quantity. The comparison between the computed velocities and the observed velocities at the mooring station show that they agree each other.

From June 1984 to May 1985, monthly and seasonal panel tests of fouling organisms were carried out on rafts at Tuoji Island. Seventy - three species were obtained. The occurring frequencies of the following species are all at least 30%: Ectocarpus confervoides, Polysiphonia urceolata, Tubularia mesembryanthmum, Cfytia edwardsi, Tubulipora pulchra, Celleporella hyalina, Mytilus edulis, Hiatella arctica, Caprella acanthogaster, Corophium crassicome, Jassa *** and Podocerus cf . inconspicuus. Large or calcareous species are not dominant ones. The wet weight is comparatively light, the yearly wet weight being 9.12 kg m-2. Attaching seasons of major species are from June to October and no bio - attachment occurs between January and April. Fouling organisms at Tuoji Island differ rather greatly from those in the harbours along the continental coast, showing the charcteristics of fouling organisms in the northern island harbours of china.

The achievement progresses of investigation and studies on marine hazardous geology are summarized and presentsd in the late 20 century in china. The importance, research value and present-day studies of marine hazardous geology, a newly developing branch of geoscience, are well expatiated. Several often confused concepts and theories are explained and redefined here. The comment on the means of investigations, assessment of marine hazardous geology, as well as its evolution, innovation, existing questions and future tasks are also introduced and presented. The concepts of 'hazard geology', geohazard', 'map of marine hazard geology', 'integrated evaluaton on seafloor stablity' are respectively discussed, including their definition, research objects, methods and contents. A two-dimensional numerical model is constructed to study the interaction between the coastal upwelling and the coastal front off Zhejiang coast in summer. In the f-plane model, the shelf topography, continuous stratification, and Richardson number-dependent eddy coefficients are considered. The results show that the coastal up-welling off Zhejiang in summer can be divided into two regions, the nearshore one (Region A) and the offshore one (Region B). In Region A, the alongshore wind stress has more important effect on the coastal upwelling while in Region B, the upwelling is mainly induced by the Taiwan Warm Current. The results also suggest that the formation of coastal front off Zhejiang in summer is closely related to the strength of the coastal upwelling in Region A.

HAB (harmful algal bloom) is a serious marine ecological disaster. Up to now there is no definite conclusion about its mechanism of *** observation results show that the HAB breakout in the Xiangshan Bay was mainly caused by physical convergence ca-pacity,and the breakout process had no direct relation to *** a new idea it is thought that the process of the HAB breakout is mainly a physical convergence or accumulation process in some areas. A hypothesis about dynamic mechanism of the HAB appearing in the area off the Changjiang Estuary is put forward according to hydrology and topography and the past work, and a breakthrough is expected to be made for doing further research.

The bacterial community in deep subseafloor sediments at a depth of 230 cm from the western Pacific "warm pool" is studied by construction of 16S rDNA clone library and PCR-RFLP (Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism) analysis. The results indicate that the bacterial community in these sediments is mainly composed of five groups: α-Proteobacteria, β-Proteobacteria, CFB group (Cytophaga / Flexi-bacteria / Bacteroides), Acidobacteria and gram positive bacteria, with a few genera detected in each group. The most abundant bacteria group is α-Proteobacteria, and the next is β-Proteobacteria. The dominant species in α-and β-Proteobacteria are Sphingomonas paucimobilis and Pseudomonas alca-ligenes respectively. The CFB group is simply composed of members belonging to Flavobacterium. The gram positive bacteria are rich, and mainly consists of the genus Geobacillus. The analysis of bacterial community indicates that organic matter is still abundant in the subseafloor sediments at the depth of 230 cm in the western Pacific "warm pool" . These bacteria in this deep biosphere may play an impor-tant role in the nitrogen cycle of deep sea sediments at "warm pool" .
