AIM: To explore whether the angiotensin Ⅱ (Ang Ⅱ) receptor 1 (AT1) antagonist, losartan could reduce activity and expression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in rat atherosclerotic plaques. METHODS: Male Wistar-Kyoto rats were ip injected a single dose of vitamin D3 600 kU·kg-1·month-1 and fed an atherogenic diet for 4.months to induce experimental atheroma. Then either placebo or losartan 50 mg·kg-1·d-1 was administered in rats for another 2 months. In vitro, the effect of losartan 0.1-10μmol/L on the expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9 was investigated in Ang II-stimulated rat peritoneal macrophages. The expression and activity of MMP-2 and MMP-9 were monitored by Western blot, RT-PCR, and SDS-PAGE zymography analysis. RESULTS: High levels of MMP-2 and MMP-9 were expressed in rat atherosclerotic lesions. Losartan significantly reduced the activity and expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9 compared with the placebo group (MMP-2, 5861±539 vs 8991±965, P4.23±24.2, P<0.01). In

The semicircular canals, composed of lateral, anterior and posterior canals in the inner ear, are the sensors of equilibrium during head rotation movements in the three-dimensional space. Semicircular canals are filled with endolymph confined by the cupula. The study of the relationship between endolymph flow and cupular deformation is important in revealing the semicircular canals biomechanical behavior. To date, there are few studies focusing on the transient endolymph flow and cupular deformation in response to a head rotation motion. The lateral semicircular canal is mainly responsible for the sense of the horizontal rotation movement. In order to figure out the intricate dynamics in the lateral semicircular canal during the head rotation motion, the time evolutions of both endolymph flow and cupular deformation are analyzed in this article by using a fully coupled fluid-structure interaction model. It is shown that the cupular deformation provides cues for understanding the physiology of sensing the head rotation.

The central role of sequential accumulation of genetic alterations during the development of cancer has been firmly established since the pioneering cytogenetic studies successfully defined recurrent chromosome changes in spedfic types of tumor. In the course of carcinogenesis, cells experience several genetic alterations that are associated with the transition from a preneoplastic lesion to an invasive tumor and finally to the metastatic state. Tumor progression is characterized by stepwise accumulation of genetic *** does the dominant metastatic clone. Modern molecular genetic analyses have clarified that genomic changes accumulate during the development and progression of cancers. In comparison with the corresponding primary tumor,additional events of chromosomal aberrations (including gains or allelic losses) are frequently found in metastases, and the incidence of combined chromosomal alterations in the primary tumor, plus the occurrence of additional aberrations inthe distant metastases, correlated significantly with decreased postmetastatic survival. The deletions at 3p, 4., 6q, 8p, 10q,11p, 11q, 12p, 13q, 16q, 17p, 18q, 21q, and 22q, as well as the over-representations at 1q, 8q, 9q, 14. and 15q, have been found to associate preferentially with the metastatic phenotype of human cancers. Among of them, the deletions on chromosomes 8p, 17p, 11p and 13p seem to be more significant, and more detail fine regions of them, including 8p11, 8p21-12, 8p22, 8p23, 17p13.3, 11p15.5, and 13q12-13 have been suggested harboring metastasis-suppressor *** the past decade, several human chromosomes have been functionally tested through the use of microcell-mediated chromosome transfer (MMCT), and metastasis-suppressor activities have been reported on chromosomes 1, 6, 7, 8, 10,11, 12, 16, and 17. BACKGROUND: Sorafenib has become the standard first-line treatment for patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). This study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of sorafenib in advanced HCC patients and explore its true value for specific subgroups. DATA SOURCES: A computer-based systematic search from January 2005 to June 2011 with 'sorafenib' and 'advanced hepatocellular carcinoma' as search terms was performed for possible clinical trials. Hazard ratios (HR) and their 95% confidence intervals (CI) for overall survival (OS) and time to progression (TTP), rates of partial response (PR), rates of toxicity effects, and details of subgroup analysis were extracted. Meta-analyses were done using the software Review Manager (version 5.0). RESULTS: Six trials with 1164.patients were included. Based on three randomized controlled trials, the pooled HR (sorafenib/ placebo) was 0.66 for OS (95% CI: 0.56-0.78; P4.-0.68; P4. P=0.0002) and 0.64.for TTP (95% CI: 0.52-0.78; P4.hand-foot skin reaction, diarrhea, fatigue, and rash/***: Sorafenib-based therapy benefits advanced HCC patients. Meanwhile, sorafenib is less effective for patients with extrahepatic spread, with normal AFP level and with elevated level of bilirubin.

Background and objective Pre-operative assessment of mitral valve (MV) anatomy is essential to surgical design in patients undergoing MV *** 2-dimensional (2D) echocardiography provides precise information regarding MV anatomy,RT-3D TEE could increase the understanding of MV apparatus and individual scallop *** aimed to investigate the value of RT- 3DTEE in MV *** RT-3DTEE was performed in six patients with mitral valve prolapse (MVP) by using Philips 1E33 with X7-2t *** RT-3DTEE studies were compared with surgical findings in patients undergoing surgical mitral valve repair,and quantitative evaluation was performed by QLab 6.0 software before and after surgical mitral valve *** RT- 3DTEE could display dynamic morphology of MV,the location of prolapse,and spatial relation to the surrounding *** could provide surgical views of the valves and the valvular *** results were consistent with surgical *** quantitative evaluation before and after surgical MV repair indicated that anterolateral to posteromedial diameter of annulus,anterior to posterior diameter of annulus,perimeter of annulus,and area of annulus in projection plane were significantly smaller after operation compared with those before operation (P<0.05).The length of posterior leaflet,the area of anterior and posterior leaflet,the maximal prolapse height,the volume of leaflet prolapse and the length of coaptation in projection plane were significantly reduced after operation (P<0. 05).Conclusion RT-3DTEE is a unique new modality for rapid and accurate evaluation ofmitral valve prolapse and mitral valve repair.

AIM: To evaluate the metabolic effects associated withadministration of rhGH and/or Gln in parenterally fed,short-bowel ***: Forty SD rats subjected to 75 % intestinalresection and maintained with parenteral nutritionwere randomly divided into 4.groups as follows: -rhGH,-Gln; -rhGH, +Gln; +rhGH, -Gln; +rhGH, +*** and nitrogen balance were evaluated daily. After6 days of PN, rats were killed, various organs weredissected and weighted, the carcasses were used foranalysis of body composition. Serum GH and IGF-1 weredetermined by RIA ***: Weight loss in rats with rhGH (17.4.12.8 g)and rhGH+Gln (23.8±3.5 g) was significantly less thanrats with PN alone (29.6±6. 9 g) and rats with Gln-supplemented PN (31.85±12.8 g), P＜0.05. Theaccumulated NB in rats with rhGH (1252.9±294.3 mgN/d) and rhGH+Gin (1261.7±85.5 mg N/d) wassignificantly greater than those with PN alone (704.8±379.0 mg N/d) and with Gln-supplemented PN(856.7±284.4.mg N/d), P＜0.05. The absolute weightof gastrocnemius muscle in rats with rhGH (2683.9±34..6 mg) and rhGH+Gln (2579.1±359.5 mg) wasgreater than those with PN alone (2176.3±167.1 mg)and with Gln-supplemented PN (214..9±353.6 mg).Although the absolute weight of remnant smallintestine itself was not significantly different in 4.xperimental groups, the weight/length of thesegments was greater in rats with rhGH and/or Gln(4..7±5.5, 52.7±4.1 and 67.4.5.3 respectively) thanthose with PN alone(4..8±5.0), there were synergisticeffects between rhGH and Gln in improvement of theweight/length of remnant small intestine, P＜*** of body carcass composition showed that ahigher percentage of carcass weight as protein and alower percentage of carcass weight as fat wereoccurred in rats with rhGH (20.8±4.0,6.0±2.6) andrhGH+Gin(21.3±2.4.4.4.1.5) than those with PNalone (16.4.2.4.9.2+3.7) and with Gln-supplementedPN (17.8±3.0,6.3±2.0), rhGH had significant effectson alteration of body composition, P＜0.05.
