Microfossils, carbonate lysocline and compensation depth in surface sediments of the northeastern South china Sea

Based on the quantitative analyses of abundance of planktonic foraminifera, benthic foraminifera, calcareous nannofossils, the ratios of calcareous to siliceous microfossils, and the determination of carbonate contents in the surface sediments of the northeastern South china Sea, it has been found that the carbonate contents, the abundance of planktonic foraminifera and calcareous nannoplankton, and the ratio of calcareous microfossils decrease rapidly while the ratio of the benthic foraminifera to the total foraminiferal fauna, specific value of siliceous microfossils, and the percentage of the agglutinated tests in the benthic foraminiferal fauna increase with the water depth. The results indicate that the microfossils abundance and ratio, and the carbonate content are closely related to the carbonate lysocline and carbonate compensation depth (CCD) in the study area. In addition, the carbonate lysocline and the CCD are different between the southern and northern parts of the South china Sea. Both the lysocline and the CCD are deeper in the south with 2 600 and 3 600 m than in the north with 2 200 and 3 4.0 m, respectively.

Forcing mechanism of the Pleistocene east Asian monsoon variations in a phase perspective

The deep sea records from the ODP Sites 114. and 114. in the northern and southern South china Sea (SCS), including foraminiferal δ 18O and δ 13C, Opal% and pollen percentage, reveal that the variations of the east Asian monsoon have been closely correlated with the variations of the Earth’s orbital parameters (eccentricity, obliquity and precession) and the global ice volume on orbital scale. All the monsoonal proxies show strong 100 ka, 4. ka and 23 ka cycles. Although G. ruber δ 13C of Site 114. is coherent with the ETP (ETP= normalized (eccentricity + obliquity-precession) at eccentricity, obliquity and precession bands, most of the coherent relationship focuses on the precession band, and the other monsoonal proxies are coherent with the ETP only at the precession band, which indicate that precession dominates the Pleistocene tropical climate changes. The phase relationship of the monsoonal proxies with the foraminiferal δ 18O implies that the global ice volume changes have played a significant role in modulating the east Asian monsoon climate, at least dominating the winter monsoon. This forcing mechanism of the east Asian monsoon is apparently different from that of the Indian ocean mon-soon. The variations of the east Asian monsoon at the precession band, at least that of the winter monsoon, have been controlled not only by the sensible heating but also by the latent heating of the surface water in the South china Sea.

Sedimentary basins are where the products or erosion of the related reliefs *** sedimentary records preserved in the basins offer the possibility of quantifying the paleotopography z(x,y,t) at each point( x,y )of a given region at any time t in the past by using methods of mass balanced reconstruction(Hay et al.,1989,Métivier and Gaudemer,1997),The importance of paleotopography is on that atmospheric circulation models and the ocean circulation models which depend on them require knowledge of the topography of the land as an important input boundary condition which strongly affects the model output(Barron and Washington,1984.Ruddiman et al.,1997).Thus,a first step towards establishing paleoelevations is to reconstitute the history of sedimentary basins in terms of mass accumulation(Hay et al.,1989).This work reconstructs the space\|time depositional history and estimates the mass stored in the Hoh Xil basin,northern *** Hoh Xil basin,with an area of 101000km\+2 and an average elevation of over 5000m,is the largest Cenozoic sedimentary basin in the hinterland of the Tibetan *** the Early Eocene to the Early Miocene,a sediment pile of approximately 5 4.m thick of fluvial mudstone,sandstone,and conglomerate and 0 3km thick of limestone was formed in the basin (Liu and Wang,2000;Liu et al.,2000).the mass estimate is derived from 21 measured field cross\|sections,with total thickness of 134.9 *** results show that the Hoh Xil basin has undergone 7 stages of evolution from the Early Eocene to the Early Oligocene,with a period of no sedimentation during the Late *** Fenghuoshan Group was formed from the first four stages as 56 0～52 0,52 0～4. 7,4. 7～39 7,and 39 7～33 2Ma ago,with the depocenter moving eastward and *** Yaxicuo Group was formed from the two next stages as 33 2～32 2 and 33 2～30 2Ma *** Wudaoliang Group spread the entire basin during the last stage of ca.23 0～16 0Ma ago,with its depocenter in the northern part

Late Quaternary glacial cycle and precessional period of clay mineral assemblages in the Western Pacific Warm Pool

Variability of clay mineral assemblages in the Western Pacific Warm Pool(WPWP) over the past 370 ka shows the prominent glacial-interglacial ***(62%-91%) is the dominant clay mineral,with decreased contents during interglacials while increased in *** contrast,variations in chlorite(4.-21%),illite(4.-12%),and kaolinite(2%-10%) share a similar pattern with higher contents during interglacials than glacials,mirroring to that of *** results indicate that the smectite-dominated clay minerals derive mainly from the river detrital inputs of New *** glacial-interglacial cycle of clay mineral assemblages well correspond to the fluctuation of sea *** the sea level was low,the river materials can travel more easily across the narrow shelf off the island of New Guinea,inject directly into the subsurface currents flowing westwards,then merge into the Equatorial Undercurrent(EUC),and eventually deposit on the central part of *** periods of the smectite content indicate the intensity of mechanical erosion in its provenance of New Guinea,responding to the river runoff and precipitation,and this could also be linked to the meridional migration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone(ITCZ).

Pleistocene precession forcing of the upper ocean structure variations of the southern South china Sea

The precession plays a dominant role in driving the tropical monsoon variations. Our high resolution, millennial scale marine isotope records from ODP Site 114. in the southern South china Sea (SCS) present the detailed history of the upper ocean structure variations over the past 1.56 Ma on glacial/interglacial timescale. The cross spectral analyses between the Earth’s orbital variations and the isotopic differences reveal a high coherency between the East-Asian-monsoon-related thermocline and nutricline variations of the SCS and the precession. The variations of monsoon-related isotopic difference between species also demonstrate periodicities of 11-, 12- and 14. thousand years near semi-precession which originates in the tropics, highlighting the importance of the precession in driving the east Asian monsoon changes.

Field investigations were presented into a tropical mountainous river estuary of Herbert, Australia, following a moderate flood event induced by Cyclone Fritz. In-situ mooring and shipboard measurements were conducted using an acoustic Doppler current profiler, a conductivity-temperature-depth unit, and an optical backscatter nephelometer. Owing to the flood discharge onto the shelf, a river plume forms and is deflected under the along-shelf current induced by the trade wind. Intense stratification at the base of plume suppresses vertical mixing, significantly decreases bottom stresses, and separates the water column into two mixed layers. The normal depth of the plume relative to its critical depth is controlled only by the bed slope and the drag coefficient of the interface, independent of river discharge and buoyancy anomaly. A divergent nepheloid dispersal system usually occurs under combined flow segregation and intense stratification. Two nepheloid layers are both confined to the inner shelf under different dispersal mechanisms. The upper nepheloid layer, primarily controlled by advection and settling, is exponentially decayed away from the river mouth. The lower nepheloid layer dominated by settling is detached seaward near the lift-off point. The plume lift-off and subsequent internal jump are crucial processes for the trapping of the plume sediment because a substantial loss of energy occurs, and farther control the pattern of mud deposit on the shelf. Fronts have important influences on the sediment release from the river plume, with different trapping effect in the presence and absence of stratification.

A　restudy　of　ostracode　assemblages　in　the　surface　sediments　of　the　Huanghai　Sea

Distribution pattern of ostracodes in the western part of the Huanghai Sea was re-analyzed using the occurrence data of 14. species from 175 surface sediment samples. The high values of ostracode speimen density are generally restricted to depths shallower than 4. m. The species diversity H(S) is higher in the southern part and lower in the northem part of the area studied, the trend which is correspondent to the change of water temperature in the Huanghai Sea. In the area where radial tidal sands is distributed, H(S) reaches its maximum average *** ostracode biofacies were delineated using Q-mode factor analysis, based on the data of 77 samples and 69 species. Their distributions are correspondent with environmental parameters such as water temperature, salinity and substrate *** tracing the geographical distribution of ostracode species in the Huanghai Sea and the East china Sea, it is reconfirmed that the discontinuity of species distribution between the two areas, located at around 32N, coincides with the boundary of subtropical/warm temperate zones of china seas.

Pattern recognition of the acoustic Sea-bed Profiling——Records and sea-bed geological classification

The physical properties of pattern characteristics for typical Acoustic Sea-bed Profiling Records (ASPRs) in the area of Changjiang Estuary and the East china Sea are analyzed in this paper. Nine pattern characteristics are summarized and it was shown that 9 geological categories can be determined by 4.pattern characteristics. Based on the above analysis, a Bayes-based pattern characteristics classifier for interpretation of ASPRs is developed.

Modeling the impact of Australian Plate drift on Southern Hemisphere climate and environment

Using a global atmosphere-ocean coupled model with the present-day and 14.MaB.P. oceanic topogra- phy respectively, two experiments are implemented to inves- tigate the effect of different locations of Australian Plate on the atmospheric circulation in middle-high latitudes of the Southern Hemisphere. The results show that when Austra- lian Plate lay south at 14.MaB.P., both anticyclone circula- tions in the subtropical oceans and cyclone circulation around 60°-70°S are strengthened. Subtropical highs and circumpolar low pressure appear stronger, which results in much stronger Antarctic Oscillation and shorter period of Antarctic Oscillation Index (AOI) at 14.MaB.P. The rainfall and the surface air temperature also change correspondingly. The precipitation decreases around 4.°S and increases around 60°-70°S, and the surface air temperature rises in high latitudes of the South Pacific and descends over the Weddell Sea and its north side. Besides, due to the changes of the temperatures and winds, Antarctic sea ice coverage also changes with its increasing in the Ross Sea and its west re- gions and decreasing in the Weddell Sea.
