Based on the daily outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) data from National Oceanic and At- mospheric Administration (NOAA) satellites, the Cli- mate Prediction Center’s merged analysis of pre- cipitation (CMAP) data and the National Centers for Environmental Prediction/National Center for At- mospheric Research (NCEP/NCAR) reanalysis dataset, the mean intraseasonal variability of the Asian summer monsoon (ASM) is investigated by using power spectrum analysis, band-pass filter, and diagnostic analyses. The processes of the onset and advance of monsoon over the southern part of Indo- china Peninsula, the east coast of Bay of Bengal, the South china Sea and the Indian subcontinent are explored. It is found that there is an abrupt change in OLR, precipitation and zonal wind during the onset and advance of the ASM. It is also indicated that the southern part of Indochina Peninsula and the adja- cent Andaman Sea is the region where the earliest onset of the ASM occurs in the 2nd pentad of May.

High-contrast imaging provided by a coronagraph is critical for the direction imaging of the Earth-like planet orbiting its bright parent star.A major limitation for such direct imaging is the speckle noise that is induced from the wave-front error of an optical *** derive an algorithm for the wave-front measurement directly from 3 focal plane *** 3 images are achieved through a deformable mirror to provide specific phases for the optics *** introduce an extra amplitude modulation on one deformable mirror configuration to create an uncorrelated wave-front,which is a critical procedure for wave-front *** simulation shows that the reconstructed wave-front is consistent with the original wave-front theoretically,which indicates that such an algorithm is a promising technique for the wave-front measurement for the high-contrast imaging.

ERS 1 WSC data were obtained by international cooperation. The distributive characteristics of radar backscattering coefficient image of china land surface are analyzed and the research results are presented. The capability of ERS 1 WSC data for monitoring land surfaces is investigated. The results show that the radar backscattering coefficient images can reveal the natural landform features of china land. Using the WSC data can discriminate six types of major land coverage, including evergreen vegetation and snow covered region, vegetation and crops, mountains, grassland, desert and grassland, desert. On the whole, the radar backscattering coefficient image of china land is the synthesis of the vegetation map and terrain map. Statistical study of the typical terrain shows that the radar backscatter coefficients of china land range from -29 dB to -5 dB. The lowest value corresponds to the deserts of Badain Jaran, Takla Makan, and Tengger. The highest value corresponds to snow covered regions of Himalaya Mountains and Tianshan Mountains.

The development of computer tomography and image processing has made it possible to establish virtual 3D reconstruction and non-invasive dissection of fossil specimens. We used these methods to reconstruct a virtual 3D skull of a Pleistocene cheetah skull from the Tuozi cave, Tangshan, nanjing, and virtually dissected it for anatomic studies, and measured the volumes of different parts of the endocranium. The endocranium of the cheetah skull has showed that its frontal sinus is beehive-like, the frontal lobe of cerebra is relatively large but the temporal lobe is relatively small, its cerebral sulcus and gyrus are more complicated than those of the domestic cat, similar to those of the domestic dog, but simpler than those of giant panda, pig, cattle and horse. The technology of virtual 3D reconstruction and non-invasive dissection of fossil specimens can extend the morphological study from the exterior to the interior, and it can also help to study fragile specimens and virtually backup rare and precious specimens.

-In this paper the structure of the East Asian summer monsoon regime is unraveled through investigation of the activity of the summer monsoon of china in connection with the circulation systems of low latitudes. It is shown that the components of the summer monsoon regime of East Asia are the Tibetan high. Northwest Pacific high, Mascarene high, Australian high, India-South china Sea depression and the therefrom derived tropical convergence zone and associated ascending clouds over the South china Sea and Mei-Yu fronts and associated ascending clouds over china. It is more complicated than the structure of the Indian summer monsoon regime. The East Asian summer monsoon mainly consists of the trade curreuts from the tropical region of the North Pacific Ocean and the Somalian cross-equatorial currents from the Indian Ocean. In the entire monsoon regime the key components should be the Northwest Pacific high and the Mascarene high, and they have a great influence on the Mei-yu Period’s Precipitation in the

AIM: To study the inhibitory effect of general gambogic acids (GGA) on transplantation tumor SMMC-7721 in experimental animal model and SMMC-7721 cells in vitro. METHODS: Anti-tumor activity of GGA in the experi- mental transplantation tumor SMMC-7721 was evaluated by relative tumor growth ratio. Cell morphology was observed with inverted microscope and electron microscope. Cell proliferation was measured by MTT assay and the telomerase activity was determined by PCR. RESULTS: In vivo study indicated that GGA (2, 4. and 8 mg/kg, iv, 3 times per week for 3 weeks) displayed an inhibitory effect on the growth of transplantation tumor SMMC- 7721 in nude mice compared with the normal saline group (Pogy of SMMC-7721 cells and inhibited the telomerase activity in SMMC-7721 cells. CONCLUSION: GGA had inhibitory effect on the growth of SMMC-7721, which might be related to its inhibition of telomerase activity.

This paper proposes ten types of improved floating breakwaters for experiment with regular waves, based on the experience in the development and manufacture of existing floating breakwaters both at home and abroad, and on the results of experimental studies on the hydraulic characteristics of several types of floating breakwaters. The wave heights before and behind the breakwaters are measured, the movements of floating breakwaters are observed and the chain forces of the floating breakwaters are measured. The paper studies and compares the hydraulic characteristics of the improved rectangular floating breakwaters of which the internal and external structures and their installation methods are changed. Finally the optimal type of structure is selected through experiments.
