Taurine antagonized oxidative stress injury induced by homocysteine in rat vascular smooth muscle cells

AIM: To observe protective effects of taurine on reactive oxygen species generation induced by homocysteine in rat vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC). METHODS: Rat VSMC was incubated with various concentrations of homocysteine and taurine. The lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity which released into culture medium was elevated as an indicator for VSMC injury. The reactive oxygen species (ROS) — hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and superoxide anion (O2ˉ· )were measured with luminol or lucigenin chemiluminescences method, and the mitochondria Mn-superoxide dismutase (Mn-SOD) and catalase (CAT) were also measured in treated VSMC. RESULTS: LDH leakage from cultured VSMC treated with homocystenie, was increased (P0.05 vs control). In this study, the superoxide anion in VSMC was not detectable by chemiluminent method. In addition, treatment of VSMC with taurine increased mitochondria Mn-SOD and CAT activity in a concentration dependent manner (P<0.05), but homocysteine decreased mitochondria Mn-SOD and CAT activity (P<0.01 vs control). In addition, co-administration of taurine markedly ameliorated homocysteine-induced inhibition of Mn-SOD and CAT activity in VSMC (P<0.01 vs homocysteine alone group). CONCLUSION: Taurine antagonized the effects of homocysteine on ROS generation and anti-oxidant enzyme activities in rat VSMC in vitro.

Three types of maximally entangled states for a two-particle system

For a two-particle (spin 1/2) system, three fundamental forms of complete sets of commuting observables (CSCO) composed of two-body operatorsσ 1α σ 2α are given. The corresponding simultaneous eigenstates constitute three types of maximally entangled states, one of which is the well known Bell basis. This paper discusses the possible pairs of spin observables whose simultaneous measurement outcomes are definitely correlated in probabilistic fashion.

Interaction between hydrogen sulfide/cystathionine γ-lyase and carbon monoxide/heme oxygenase pathways in aortic smooth muscle cells

Aim:To investigate the interaction between hydrogen sulfide（H2S）/cystathion-ine γ-lyase（CSE）and carbon monoxide（CO）/heme oxygenase（HO）pathways inaortic smooth muscle cells（ASMC）.Methods:The ASMCs were divided into thefollowing groups:（1）the control group;（2）the zinc protoporphyrin（ZnPP）20μmol/L group;（3）the propargylglycine（PPG）2 mmol/L,4.mmol/L and 10 mmol/Lgroups;and（4.the sodium hydrosulfide（NariS）1×10-5mol/L,1×10-4.ol/L and1×10-3mol/L *** of the groups was further divided into 6h,12h,18hand 24. *** CO level,represented by carboxyhemoglobin（HbCO）content was measured using a spectrophotometric method and H2S content wasdetected by a sensitive electrode *** and HO-1 expressions were de-tected by Western ***:The H2S content in the medium and CSEexpression by ASMC were markedly increased by ZnPP compared with the con-trol *** content in the medium and HO-1 expression by the ASMCstarted strengthening following 24. treatment with PPG at 2 mmol/L,but werefurther strengthened following 18h and 24. treatment with PPG at 4.mmol/Lcompared with the controls（P4.ol/Ldecreased the HbCO level in the medium and HO-1 expression by the ASMC after6h and 12h treatment,while NariS at 1×10-3mol/L decreased them at all timepoints of the ***:The results suggested that endogenousCO/HO and H2S/CSE pathways inhibited each other in ASMC under physiologi-cal conditions.

SYNTHESIS AND PROPERTIES OF LIQUID CRYSTAL POLYSILOXANES WITH MESOGENIC STILBENE SIDE GROUPS

A variety of mesomorphic side-chain polysiloxanes were synthesized by using hydrosilylation reaction with dicyclopentadienylplatinum(II) (DPPC) as the catalyst. The mesogenic groups are derivatives of stilbene with cyano or nitro tail groups. The products were characterized by DSC, X-ray diffraction and polarizing optical microscopy (POM). All the polymers were found to have relatively low T-g and can form a smectic liquid crystal phase.

Population pharmacokinetic model of valproate and prediction of valproate serum concentrations in children with epilepsy

AIM: Using sparse data of valproate (VPA) serum concentrations to build a population pharmacokinetic (PPK) model of VPA in Chinese children with epilepsy and to predict serum concentrations for new patients using a Bayesian approach. METHODS: Two hundred epileptic children, whose VPA serum concentrations were collected, were divided randomly into two groups (A and B, n=100 each). The PPK parameter values of group A were calculated to establish a PPK Model by using the NPEM Program of USC*PACK software. Based on it, VPA serum concentrations of group B were predicted with the Bayesian Fitting Program of the USC*PACK software. To assess the accuracy and precision of prediction, a paired-comparisons t-test was run between predicted and ob- served concentrations, and then the mean prediction error (MPE), mean square prediction error (MSPE), root mean square prediction error (RMSPE), and coincidence rates for different percentages of prediction error were all calculated. RESULTS: Optimum PPK parameters were: Ka, 2.522±2.74. h-1; Vs, 0.329±0.4.6 L/kg; and Kel, 0.04.8±0.0384.h-1. For group B, there was no significant difference between predicted and observed concentrations. MPE was -0.4. mg/L, MSPE was 115.4. (mg/L)2, and RMSPE was 5.4. mg/L. The coincidence rates for percent- ages of prediction error, which were less than 5 %, 10 %, 15 %, 20 %, 25 %, and 30 %, were 62 %, 74.%, 82 %, 85 %, 89 %, and 93 %, respectively. CONCLUSION: A PPK model of VPA in epileptic children was successfully established. Based on it, VPA serum concentrations can be predicted accurately with a Bayesian approach.

Analysis of the air-sea heat exchange during the El Nino event in 1983

In this paper,by using the ECMWF objective analysed data as well as CAC and NOAA grid point data of 1981 and 1983,the sensible and latent heat fluxes at the air and sea boundary surface within the range of 4.°E-75°W, 35°N-35°S over the Pacific and the Indian Ocean are calculated. The purpose is to analyse the different revealing features during the mature stage and at the end of the 1982 -1983 El Nino event and to compare the difference of the features between thd El Nino and the normal. The result shows that the air and sea heat exchange west of the dateline over the central tropical Pacific during the EJ Nino period is more intense than that of the normal. However,the fluxes of the sensible and latent heat on the sea surface with strong warming of SSTneat by and on the south side of the equator east of 170°W are low and even negative,and the patterns of the sensible and latent heat fluxes over the Indian Ocean during the year of 1983 are similer to that of normal. Spatial patterns of the sensible heat ,the latent heat,SST,OLR and the wind speed exhibit large anomalies during the El Nino event. The corresponding relationships of the spatial distribution of the streng exchange of heat fluxes with regions of high SST and action convection or negative anomalies of OLR are relatively complicated. But the region of maximum air and sea heat exchange is in good coincidence with that of high value of the Vs. The strong heat exchange is weakened with the declining and the finishing of the El Nino event in the central tropical Pacific.

In this paper we have completely determined:(1)all almost simple groups which act 2-transitively on one of their sets of Sylow p-subgroups.(2)all non-abelian simple groups T whose automorphism group acts 2-transitively on one of the sets of Sylow p-subgroups of T.(3)all finite groups which are 2-transitive on all their sets of Sylow subgroups.
