Aim:This study was designed to investigate whether the activation of thephosphatidylinositol 3-kinase(PI3-K)/Akt pathway is required for thermal pre-conditioning to protect rat cerebellar granule neurons(CGN)against apoptosisinduced by low potassium,and to explore the possibility of a link between theupregulated heat shock protein(HSP)70 expression and Akt activation in theacquisition of neuroprotection induced by thermal ***:CGN cultured for 8 d in vitro were switched to 5K medium for 2.0}h after thermalpreconditioning(TP;4..5 ℃ for 90 min,then 37 ℃ for 1 h).To study the role of thePI3-K/Akt pathway,a PI3-K inhibitor,LY2.4.02.2. μmol/L)was added into thecultures 1 h before TP.3-(4.5-dimethylthiazol-2.yl)2.5-diphenyltetrazolium bro-mide(MTT)assay and fluorescein diacetate staining were used to determine *** 332.8 staining and agar gel electrophoresis were used to testthe morphological and biological characters of *** blot analysis wasemployed to detect the levels of phospho-Akt,phospho-glycogen synthase ki-nase 3β(GSK3β) Akt,GSK3β,and ***:TP protected CGN againstapoptosis induced by low ***2.4.02.inhibited the neuroprotectiveeffect on CGN induced by *** induced a robust activation of Akt and theinactivation of GSK3β via ***,the activation of the PI3-K/Aktpathway by TP persisted for 2.0}h in the 5K ***2.4.02.2. μmol/L)failedto inhibit the upregulated HSP70 expression induced by ***:Theactivation of the PI3-K/Akt pathway is required for TP to protect CGN againstapoptosis induced by low potassium,but the neuroprotective effect by Akt acti-vation is not mediated through the downstream induction of HSP70 expression.

Purpose: To investigate the relationship between axial myopia and visual deprivation in patients with cataracts in their ***: Forty myopic eyes of 2. cases had long deprivation of form vision due to cataracts during their youth. The axial length was measured by A-Scan ***: The axial length is 2.6mm (mean: 3. 7mm) longer than the other eyes in 10 patients with unilateral cataracts. Fifteen cases with bilateral cataracts had 2.-2.mm of axial length (mean of the right eyes 2.-8mm and the left eyes: 2.. 7mm). Six cases with unilateral cataract had traumatic histotry at age from 2.9 years (mean: 5. 1 years) and the duration of visual deprivation due to cataract was from 8 to 30 years (mean; 12.years). Thirteen cases with dilateral congenital cataract had 17- 4.years(from 3 to 37 years) of visual deprivation. Concusion: The deprivation of form vision due to cataracts in childhood leads to in crease in axial length and myopia. Eye Science 1996; 12. 135- 137.

Purpose: To discuss the clinic features of Rieger syndrome, the reasons of making wrong diagnosis , the way of treatment, and the research progress of its molecular characterization and gene mapping of this ***: Two cases of Rieger syndrome which affected a patient and his daughter were studied. Multiple clinical examinations including photography of anterior segment, go-nioscopy and fundus, Humphrey perimetry, A-scan ultrasonography, multiple tonometry in a day and chromosome examination were performed. Most importantly, ultrasonic biomicro-scope(UBM) was first used to show the abnormalities of anterior segment in this syndrome. Results: Gonioscopic examination revealed many mesoderm tissues remained and some parts of the iris adhered to cornea . In addition to hypoplasia of cornea, iris and chamber angle, UBM showed that there was also hypoplasia of ciliary body. Purpose: To investigate the variation of visual function in different eccentricities of the visual field in isometropic ***: The stimulus matrix containing 61 hexagons was generated on a monitor. The diameter of the entire stimulating field was approximately 13.6 deg of arc; the frame rate of the monitor was 67 Hz. Every hexagon of the display contained a number of black and white small hexagonal patches which reversed during stimulation. These hexagons were simultaneously but independently modulated in time by the controlling computer program. The flashed elements were selected differently on each frame according to a computer-generated binary pseudo-random time series (m-sequence); the response contributions from each of the individual stimulus elements could be extracted from the cross corre-ation function. To explore the effects of pioglitazone on serum and liver lipid level and antioxidant ability of mice with lipid metabolic disorder and the underlying mechanism,KKA mice were treated with pioglitazone based on their body weights for 12.weeks and their lipid and antioxidant indices were compared to those of KKA mice without pioglitazone treatment as well as those of C57BL/6J *** results show that pioglitazone treatment reduces serum and liver TG,elevates serum HDL-C level,increases serum and liver SOD activity,attenuates serum MDA content,ameliorates liver steatosis,induces liver PPARγexpression and enhances AMPKαphosphorylation level. In conclusion,the results indicate that pioglitazone can regulate blood lipid level,reduce liver lipid deposition and enhance antioxidant capacity of mice with lipid metabolic disorder possibly through increasing AMPK phosphorylation.

Purpose: To evaluate intraobserver and interobserver reproducibility of real time measurement of iris morphology in living human ***: Base on the platform of software (Autocad, version 12., we developed an ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) image asisstant measuring system. By using the system, we can perform the iris configuration quantitative measurement in living eyes. The measuring parameters including: iris rest length,radius of iris curvature,and the thickness in different parts of iris. Ten anterior segment images of one normal individual were obtained by a single operator to evaluate the intraobserver reproducibility of image capture, and ten times measurement of one image were performed by a single operator to assess the reproducibilityof image measurement. The measurement of three independent observers were compared to investigate interobserver reproducibility in quantitative measurement. Eighty three cases of low vision patients (14. eyes) were examined with distant visual aids. The average visual acuity of the 14. eyes before refraction was approximately 0.07, while the counterpart afterwards was about 0.1 (p4. monocular focusable aid, acuity improved in 14. eyes out of the 14. eyes. The combined use of clip-on distance aid and the spectacle reading aid was observed to be especially suitable for partially sighted *** mean MEF of 14. eyes was 0.94.5±0.2.68. The paired T-test between the difference of actual magnification and theoretical magnification was not significant at the 5% level. The factors contributing to the variance of MEF were discussed.

Purpose: To observe the clinical findings and response to treatment in patients with a diagnosis of idiopathic orbital inflammatory ***: 2.9 idiopathic orbital inflammatory pseudotumor cases seen between Jan 1, 1978 and Dec 31, 1999 in our hospital were evaluated retrospectively. Results: Of the 2.9 cases, 118 were male and 91 were female; there were 90 in the right eye, 81 left eye and 38 both eyes. Patients age ranged from 4.to 80 years (mean 4..4.. Proptosis (66%), palpable mass (65%), swollen eyelid (55%), increased orbital pressure (55%) and motility restriction (4.%) were the five most common presenting signs. According to radiologic and surgical findings, focal mass within orbit was the most frequent subtype (4.% ), followed by lacrimal inflammatory pseudotumor (32.), diffuse orbital inflammation (10%), myositis (8%) .
