Seasonal variations of radiolarian and diatom fluxes in the central South china Sea during 1993-1995 were overwhelmingly controlled by monsoon climate. Radiolarian and diatom increased obviously during the Northeast (from November to February) and Southwest (from June to September) monsoons and decreased during the periods between the monsoons. The change of circulation driven by the monsoons improved water exchange in the different areas that brought rich nutrient materials for the surface microplankton, thereby enhancing radiolarian and diatom fluxes. Variation of radiolarian flux coincided with organic carbon flux, surface primary and export productivities. High radiolarian flux corresponded to high surface primary productivity. Radiolarian and diatom fluxes raised abnormally during 1994.1995 could be attributed to the El Nino event during the period.

Using a global OGCM and its relevant coupledocean-atmosphere GCM with the contemporary, 6 MaBPand 14.MaBP oceanic topography, respectively, a series ofnumerical experiments are implemented in order to investi-gate the effect of the north shift of Australian continent onthe tropical oceanic circulation, especially the formation ofthe western Pacific warm pool. The numerical experimentsof the individual OGCM forced by the modern atmosphericcirculation indicate that the closure of Indonesian passageresults in warming in the tropical Pacific Ocean and coolingin the tropical Indian Ocean; furthermore, it also results inchange in source of the Indonesian Through Flow (ITF) wa-ter, e.g. ITF mainly originates from the south Pacific at 14.aBP, but it mainly originates from the north Pacific *** coupled model shows similar results as the individualOGCM qualitatively.

Based on the data of high-resolution seismic profiles, an ancient river channel sys-tem of the last glaciation occurred along the Zhedong and Xihu depression in the southeast of Hupijiao rise. The distribution of the channel fill system shows that the ancient Changjiang River went through the Changjiang depression into the low land plain of the outside continental shelf during the low sea level cycle of the last glaciation. The big channel fill into Okinawa Trough is not found due to the depletion of the river kinetic energy in the low land plain. The river discharge dispersal was of an important role to the dilution of the northern Okinawa Trough sea at that time. Six ancient river channel systems (A―F), which are main distributaries of ancient Changjiang in the East china Sea continental shelf during the last glaciation, may be buried off the modern Changjiang estuary. The distribution of these channels coincides with the zonal elevations in the sea floor.

Fourteen species of Neomonoceratina from the West Pacific margins are considered in the present paper, of which two species and one subspecies are described as new. Lectotypes have been designated for three of Brady’s 1868 species (N. bataviana, N. iniqua and N. rhomboidea) and also for two of Kingma’s 194. species (N. macropora and N. microreticulata).The taxonomic confusion within the genus, particularly with respect to N. crispata, N. delicata, N. dongtaiensis, N. iniqua and N. microreticulata, is clarified and the zoogeographical implication of the distribution of the genus is discussed.

The Yarlung Zangbo Suture Zone (YZSZ), a major lineament in Tibet geological framework, which is accepted as the collision site between India and Asia (Allègre et al., 1984. Coulon et al., 1986; Dewey et al., 1990; Yin et al., 1994., is an extremely complicated tectonic zone. It includes seven different tectonic\|sedimentary units from north to south as follows: Gangdese arc complex keeping the Sangri Group inside, the Qiuwu Formation, the Giabulin Formation, the Xigaze Group, ophiolitic massifs, the Liuqu Group, and melange zones (Wang et al., 1999). Current models, which mainly focus on researches at the unit of ophiolitic massifs, propose that most of the Tethyan oceanic lithosphere was subducted into one single subduction zone active during the Middle Cretaceous or the Late Cretaceous, and closed during the Paleogene India\|Asia collision. In this report, we present latest research results on units in the Xigaze forearc basin and others in YZSZ after 6\|year\|period of comprehensive investigations. Chronostratigraphy framework, sedimentology, and evolution of the Xigaze forearc basin are discussed in details. Four thrust systems in YZSZ are named. Dynamic evolution of the YZSZ including two subductions of Tethys is presented.

The sedimentary characteristics, grain-size distribution, geochemical composition and surface characteristics of quartz grains, together with palaeoenvironmental reconnaissance, all point to an aeolian origin for the intercalated siltstone beds in the Plio-Pleistocene Artux and Xiyu Formations along the southern margins of the Tarim Basin, indicating that loess deposition in the region started, at least, in the Early Pliocene. Loess deposition in the southern Tarim Basin was a response to the global deterioration, which might be attributed to the uplift of the Tibetan Plateau.

Relationship between magnetic fabric parameters and dynamic characteristics of deposits in different environments

Comparison of magnetic fabric parameters of deposits in different modern sedimentary environments indicates that values of \%P, F\% and \%L\% of eolian deposits are lower obviously than those of hydrogenic ones respectively. On relationship diagrams of magnetic fabric parameters, data points of eolian samples concentrated in limited area near origin of coordinates indicate that dynamic intensity is lower with less variation; while those of hydrogenic ones depart from origin of coordinates suggest higher intensity of sedimentary dynamics. Analyses of dynamic characteristics of different sedimentary environments indicate that values of magnetic fabric parameters of deposits are determined by dynamic types and characteristics of depositional processes. Magnetic fabric analyses of deposits are effective in determination of sedimentary environments.

Two hteh resolution down-cores (92-255, 92-170) are used to study the Palaxeanographic events of the southern Okinawa Trough during the last 20 000 years. Planktonic foraminifera are quantitatively analyzed and three paleoceanographic events are recognized. Glacial/post-glacial variations in sea surface temperature (SST), water masses and upper water column structure are the most important environmental changes recorded by planktonic foraminifera. There is also an abrupt climatic event (about 10 710~ 9 170 a BP) during the Termination I, planktonic foraminifera (PF) δ18 O and SST have a same return pattern, but benthic foraminifera (BF) δ18 O doesn' t *** between PF δ18 O and BF δ18 O may reflect that the sea suriace water is more sensitive to abrupt, short term environmental change than the sea bottom water. High-resolution strata aIso suggest a middle- Holocene Pulleniatina obliquifoculata minimum event.

The tropical oceans are important source areas for global heat and water vapor transport,and changes in tropical sea surface temperature (SST) will have important impacts on high-latitude and global climate change. It is crucial to establish the precise phase relationship between tropical and high-latitude climate variability to gain insight into the mechanisms of global climate change. Here,we present multi-proxy records across the penultimate deglaciation (Termination Ⅱ) from sediment Core SO184.9,which is located in the outflow area of the Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) of the Timor Sea. These proxy records include planktonic and benthic foraminifera δ 18O,planktonic foraminifera G. ruber Mg/Ca-derived SST,and δ18Ow of sea surface water. The Mg/Ca-SST records indicate a warming of 4.1°C in the Timor Sea over Termination Ⅱ,which is in phase with decrease in planktonic and benthic δ18O. Our results suggest that at millennial timescales,climate change of the tropical oceans is synchronous with high-latitude ice volume changes. Furthermore,warming of the Timor Sea is almost simultaneous with warming of the Antarctic,suggesting a rapid heat transfer from the tropics to the Antarctic via the atmosphere and/or ocean circulations. The G. ruber δ18O and SST records of Core SO184.9 show a marked YD-like event during Termination Ⅱ,which is probably caused by decrease in Australian rainfall or strengthening of the Western Pacific Warm Pool. However,a similar YD-like event is not observed in East Asian rainfall records. This discrepancy indicates that different tropical climate systems may have different responses to the same forcing,such as El Nio Southern Oscillation. A similar YD-like event is observed in the global benthic foraminiferal δ18O records during Termination Ⅱ,implying teleconnection of millennial scale climate change between the tropical regions and high latitudes.
