Responses of soil respiration in non-growing seasons to environmental factors in a maize agroecosystem,Northeast china

Based on continuous three-year measurements (from 2004.to 2007) of eddy covariance and related environmental factors, environmental controls on variation in soil respiration (Rs) during non-growing season were explored in a maize agroecosystem in Northeast china. Our results indicated that during non-growing seasons, daily Rs was 1.08-4.08 g CO2 m-2 d-1, and the lowest occurred in late November. The average Rs of non-growing season was 4.6.06 ± 20.01 g CO2 m-2, accounting for 11% of the gross primary production (GPP) of the growing season. Additionally, at monthly scale, the lowest value of Rs appeared in January or February. From the beginning to the end of non-growing season, daily Rs tended to decrease first, and then increase to the highest. There was a significant quadratic curve relationship between Rs and soil temperature at 10 cm depth when soil temperature was more than 0°C (P4. of Rs in growing season, indicating that it plays a critical role in assessing the carbon budget in maize agroecosystem, Northeast china.

Photosynthesis is a process that converts solar energy to chemical energy in many different organisms, ranging from plants to bacteria. Photosynthesis provides all the food we eat and all the fossil fuel we use. Photosynthesis has long been studied in order to understand its underlying mechanisms and then to apply this knowledge to the production of energy and food for the needs of our society. The 15th International Congress on Photosynthesis will be held in beijing from August 22 to 27, 2010. It will feature eminent plenary speakers and state-of-the-art symposium speakers who are at the cutting edge of discovery in their fields and provide an exciting scientific program which will cover the breadth and depth of photosynthesis from molecular to global. To celebrate this congress, Journal of Integrative Plant Biology （JIPB） publishes a special issue on photosynthesis which includes reviews of the recent progress on the various aspects of photosynthesis.

Wolffia Horkel ex Schleid.(Lemnaceae) includes the world’s smallest ***,their bodies are extremely simplified,making classification difficult and *** reports about the genetic structure of these clonal-dominant aquatic plants have been published until *** this study,of 24. samples from 4. populations spanning representative locations in china,two chloroplast haplotypes(glo-cp and un-cp) and 66 amplified fragment length polymorphism genotypes were *** on wide sampling,cpDNA haplotypes,and amplified fragment length polymorphism profiles,we found that there are two genetic lineages(glo-and unlineages) of Wolffia species in *** and genetic diversity of Wolffia species are high compared with other clonal plants(Simpson’s index,D = 0.97;Nei’s diversity,H = 0.1835).Different spatial structure patterns were detected between glo-and *** autocorrelation at short distances(4.0 km) and slightly negative autocorrelations at larger distances(>1500 km) were detected within the glo-lineage,but no significant spatial genetic structure was detected beyond 100 km within the ***,spatial genetic analysis of *** revealed significant autocorrelation within short distances,indicating that restricted gene flow might be one of the most important factors in shaping genetic structure.

SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF NEW STABILIZERS WITH OPTIMAL MOLECULAR WEIGHT

Over 2 x 10(8) tons of polymers are produced every year, and a large portion of polymers faces the degradation problem. There are many effective methods to protect polymers against degradation and the addition of stabilizers to polymer remains the most convenient and effective way of enhancing polymer life and performance. In this article, a series of effective stabilizers with optimal molecular weight (MW), including common, monomeric and polymeric stabilizers (antioxidant and light stabilizer) were synthesized using isocyanation, controlled isocyanation, hydrosilylation, epoxide addition, macroreaction of stabilizing functional compounds and polymerization of monomeric stabilizers. The structure and performance of these new stabilizers were characterized by using IR, NMR, MS, UV-spectra, XPS and elemental analysis. The current development of stabilizer synthesis was also reviewed.

Historical opinions of the "species problem" are briefly reviewed, and four salient stages are recognized according to origin of species concepts. We propose that species is the unit preserving superior gene assembly and is maintained by specific mechanisms. Based on characteristics of plant evolution, we assume that understanding plant species may include three stages, i.e. morphological recognition stage, multidisciplinary verification stage, and illuminating mechanisms preserving superior gene assembly.

Soil respiration is an important component of terrestrial carbon budget. Its accurate evaluation is es- sential to the study of terrestrial carbon source/sink. Studies on soil respiration at present mostly focus on the temporal variations and the controlling factors of soil respiration, but its spatial variations and controlling factors draw less attention. Moreover, the evaluation models for soil respiration at present include only the effects of water and heat factors, while the biological and soil factors controlling soil respiration and their interactions with water and heat factors have not been considered yet. These models are not able to accurately evaluate soil respiration in different vegetation/terrestrial ecosystems at different temporal and spatial scales. Thus, a general evaluation model for soil respiration (GEMSR) including the interacting meteorological (water and heat factors), soil nutrient and biological factors is suggested in this paper, and the basic procedure developing GEMSR and the research tasks of soil respiration in the future are also discussed.

Palynological record during the Pleistocene (between 1.05 Ma and 0.36 Ma) from ODP114., northern South china Sea

This paper presents the pollen record from the lower section of ODP114. (depth 501.3-225.7 m, ca. 1.05-0.36 Ma). Two pollen zones (PA and PB) and eleven pollen subzones are recognized. Within zone PB, the 11 pollen subzones (PB21-11) are defined according to the pine, fern and herb variations, and are equivalent to the marine isotope stages 21-11 (MISs 21-11). The interglacial periods are typified by an increase in pine pollen and fern spores, and a decrease in herbaceous pollen, while the patterning during the glacial periods is just the opposite. During the interglacial periods, pollen assemblages were dominated by pine similar to those of the present day, suggesting that the paleoenvironment of the interglacial periods was similar to that of the present day, whereas the glacial periods are marked by an increase in herbaceous pollen, mainly Gramineae and Cyperaceae, indicating that grassland covered the exposed continental shelf when sea level declined. Increased Artemisia percentages and the highest pine influx during MIS12 may result from a stronger winter monsoon.

Phosphatidylglycerol effect on oxygen-evolving activity in Ca^(2+)-depleted photosystem Ⅱ

The ettect of anionic phosphatidylglycerol (HG) on oxygen evolution in a photosystem Ⅱ (PS Ⅱ) particle depleted of Ca2+ (designated dCaPS Ⅱ) has been investigated. The major finding is the observation of a new role of PG in the PS Ⅱ function. That is, PG restores nearly the lost oxygen evolution in dCaPS Ⅱ particle owing to Ca2+ depletion to the levels in intact PS Ⅱ . Furthermore, there is a stimulation of oxygen-evolving activity in the dCaPSⅡ complexed with PG in the presence of exogenous CaCI2, which PG enhances increasingly oxygen evolution with increasing CaCI2 concentration. It is suggested that PG-induced oxygen evolution recovery of dCa PS Ⅱresumption of normal structure in protein by PG effect, whereas the enhancement of oxygen evolution in complex subject to CaCI2 is ascribed to the optimization of such a structure due to coordination complex formation of Ca2+ ions with PG.
