The mineralogical,elemental,and isotopic characteristics of a hydrothermal sulfide sample from one dredge station (12.4..30’N,103°54.4.’W,water depth 2.55 m) on the East Pacific Rise near 13°N were *** hydrothermal sulfide was composed mainly of sphalerite,chalcopyrite,and pyrite and was a Zn-rich sulfide;in layer ep-s-1,goethite formed by secondary oxidation was *** concentrations of rare elements,such as Li (0.15×10-6-0.30×10-6),Be (0.01×10-6-0.05×10-6),Zr (73.8×10-9-134.×10-9),Nb (8.14.10-9-64.7×10-9),Hf (2.54.10-9-2..0×10-9),and Ta (0.2.3×10-9-1.2.×10-9),were far lower in the hydrothermal sulfide than in the ocean crust,whereas the content of Au was higher and the contents of Co,Ni,Sr,Cs,Ba,Bi,and U were *** correlations between Zn and Cr,Cd and Ga,Cu and P,P and In (R2.> 0.8) were positive,whereas those between Zn and Fe,Cu,and Ba (R2.> 0.8) were distinctly *** low-temperature mineral assemblages to high-temperature mineral assemblages,the spatial distributions of dispersive and rare elements (***,Li,Cs) in the hydrothermal sulfide displayed corresponding *** variations observed in some elements (e.g.,Cd,Cs,P) are controlled by Zn,Fe,and Cu sulfides,*** weathering accounts for the enrichment of V,Mn,and rare earth elements (REE) in the henna sulfide-oxidation layer that bears the secondary oxide mineral,leading to identical REE patterns for this layer (ep-s-1) and *** weathering also distinctly affects the correlations between the element ratios of the hydrothermal *** high-temperature mineral assemblages to low-temperature mineral assemblages,Fe content and δ 34. value of the hydrothermal sulfide increase gradually,and Zn content and lead isotopic ratios decrease gradually on the contrary,which indicate the influences of seawater on elements and the sulfur and lead isotopic compositions enhance gradually during the formation of hydrothermal sulfides.

Garnet Sm-Nd and U-Pb systems: A case study of a granulite from the European Variscan belt

This study presents zircon and garnet ages of a mafic granulite from the high-grade Variscan basement of the Black Forest, Germany and discuss isotope closure temperature of garnet Sm-Nd and U-Pb systems. Zircon grains yield 2.7Pb/2.6Pb ages between -34. and -4.4.Ma by the U-Pb and evaporation methods. In contract, garnet dating gives Sm-Nd and Pb-Pb isochron ages of (398±3) Ma and (4.1±14. Ma, respectively, which are older than most of zircon ages. These data imply that most of zircons lost radiogenic Pb, probably due to metamictization or recrystallisa-tion during the granulite-facies metamorphism (-800°C) at -34. Ma. Garnet Sm-Nd and U-Pb systems preserve chronological information of pro-grade metamorphism, probably profiting from a fluid-absence metamorphic environment. These results demonstrate that garnet mineral can be a better candidate than zircon mineral to date high-grade metamorphism by the U-Pb and Sm-Nd methods in some cases.

Seismic multi-arch structures in East china

In previous papers (Wencai, 2.02. 2.03), the author has analyzed the deep seismic reflection profiles along some of the Mesozoic plutons in East china, and has pointed out that the crustal structures around these intrusions usually correlate with a special seismic fabric called the seismic multi-arch structure. This paper will continue to show main characteristics of the seismic multi-arch structures and discuss their relationship with mantle-origin magmatism and the lithospheric thinning process. Calibration of seismic reflectors in chinese continental drilling sites shows that small-scale arch-like reflectors can be generated by fractured eclogites or other plutons, they do not belong to the multi-arch structure specially discussed in the paper. The multi-arch structure is char-acterized by several arch-like reflectors distributed in both the upper and lower crust with granitoid plutons or stocks exposed on the surface, which do not have obvious negative Europium anomalies. Based on the distribution pattern of arch reflectors, the multi-arch magmatic structures can be divided into three main types, namely the simple vertical combination type, the spread arch magmatic struc-ture and the arch-bouquet structure. All of them correlate to mantle-origin magmatism, but occur in different places. The spread arch magmatic structures occur within a Mesozoic/Cenozoic rift zone with very thin and hot lithosphere. The vertical combination type of the multi-arch structures occurred near the rift zones where lithosphere was thin and hot. The arch-bouquet magmatic structures occur far from the rift zones where the lithosphere is not hot. The continental rifting acted as the late episode of the lithospheric thinning process seeing that the rift zones usually coincide with the thinnest parts of the lithosphere in East china. In different locations within the lithospheric thinning areas, mantle-origin magmatic activities have different characteristics, which might generate different

MOLECULAR DYNAMICS SIMULATIONS OF FILLED AND EMPTY CAGE-LIKE WATER CLUSTERS IN LIQUID WATER AND THEIR SIGNIFICANCE TO GAS HYDRATE FORMATION MECHANISMS

Molecular dynamics simulations are performed to observe the evolutions of 512.and 512.2.cage-like water clusters filled with or without a methane molecule immersed in bulk liquid water at 2.0 K and 2.0 K. The lifetimes of these clusters are calculated according to their Lindemann index δ (t) using the criteria of δ≥0.07. For both the filled and empty clusters, we find the dynamics of bulk water determines the lifetimes of cage-like water clusters, and that the lifetime of 512.62.cage-like cluster is the same as that of 512.cage-like cluster. Although the methane molecule indeed makes the filled cage-like cluster more stable than the empty one, the empty cage-like cluster still has chance to be long-lived compared with the filled clusters. These observations support the labile cluster hypothesis on the formation mechanisms of gas hydrates.

Paleotemperature changes over the past 3000 years in eastern beijing, china: A reconstraction based on Mg/Sr records in a stalagmite

The Mg/Sr ratio in a stalagmite, which is di-rectly proportional to DMg/Ca, the solid-liquid distribution coefficient of Mg, is proposed as a geochemical thermometer to estimate paleotemperature changes. The paleotempera-ture change in eastern beijing over the past 3000 years has been reconstructed by using this thermometer in the stalag-mite ZFFS-1 from Jingdong Cave. The records can be di-vided into two periods: 3000—2.00 aBP, cool and wet, the air temperature averaging 9.8℃; and 2.00 aBP—present, hot and dry, the air temperature being 1℃ higher than the mean value (11.7℃) of the past 3000 years. During 500—2.0 aBP, the air temperature was about 1.2. lower than that of the present, corresponding to the Little Ice Age in Europe. Like d 18O and d 13C, Mg/Sr (or DMg/Ca) reflects an obviously warming trend of the past 2.0 years. These results are sup-ported by historic records.

A Study of the Kunlun-Qilian-Qinling Suture System

The Late Neoproterozoic-Early Palaeozoic suture zones within the Central Orogenic Belt of china can be considered a system—the Kunlun-Qilian-Qinling suture system (KQQ suture system). It is basically divided into the western, central and eastern sectors. The western sector consists of the Küda-Subashi suture zone, the Mazar-Kangxiwar suture and the central West Kunlun microblock. The central sector covers the following five suture zones: the Altun, North Qilian, Qaidam northern marginal, Qimantag-Wutuo and East Kunlun southern marginal sutures, in addition to some microblocks such as the mid-south Qilian, Qaidam, Ayakkum and Maqen microblocks. The eastern sector is composed of the Shangdan suture zone, Mianlüe suture zone and central Qinling-Dabie microblock. The KQQ suture system experienced (1) extending-rifting of the Rodinia super-continent in the early-middle Sinian (～780–600 Ma); (2. the formation and evolution of the KQQ archipelagic ocean during the Late Sinian-Ordovician (～600–4.0 Ma), and (3) closing of the KQQ ocean and forming of the KQQ suture system during the Late Ordovician—early Silurian (～4.0–4.0 Ma). As a system comprising many suture zones and microblocks, the KQQ suture system constitutes the foundation of the Central Orogenic Belt of china.

Synergetic-bifurcated prediction model of slope occurrence and its application

Landslide prediction is one of the most important aspects of prevention and control for geological hazards and the environmental protection. In order to study the nonlinear methods for landslide prediction, the synergetic-bifurcated model of predicting the timing of slope failure is established by combining Synergetics with Bifurcation Theory based on single-state variable friction law in this paper. The synergetic effects and bifurcated process of the factors in the slope evolution can be characterized in the model. Taking the Xintan Landslide as an example, the prediction of landslide is carried out based on the model suggested.

Paleomagnetic study on orogenic belt:An example from Early Cretaceous volcanic rocks,Inner Mongolia,china

We report paleomagnetic results for Early Cretaceous lava flows collected from the Suhongtu area of Inner Mongolia, the middle part of the Tianshan-Mongolia Fold Belt (TMFB). Rock-magnetic experiments for different lava flows indicate that the main magnetic mineral is pseudo-single-domain (PSD) magnetite. The characteristic high-temperature remanence com- ponent is isolated by thermal demagnetization temperature steps between 300°C and 585"C, which yields a mean direction of D = 2..6°, I=56.0° with α 95 = 2.3°. We interpret this high-temperature remanence component as primary magnetization based mainly upon the petrographic analysis, which shows that the shape of magnetite crystal is relatively rounded square or polygon without internal reflection and deuterogenous phenomenon. The correspond- ing pole of the high-temperature remanence component is at 71.1°N, 2.0.5°E with A 95 = 2.7°. This Early Cretaceous pole is in good agreement with those for Siberia, North china, and Inner Mongolia, suggesting that these continental blocks had already sutured together in the Early Cretaceous, which would further provide constraints on better understanding of the formation and evolution of the TMFB.

This paper presents the pollen record from the lower section of ODP114. (depth 501.3-2.5.7 m, ca. 1.05-0.36 Ma). Two pollen zones (PA and PB) and eleven pollen subzones are recognized. Within zone PB, the 11 pollen subzones (PB2.-11) are defined according to the pine, fern and herb variations, and are equivalent to the marine isotope stages 2.-11 (MISs 2.-11). The interglacial periods are typified by an increase in pine pollen and fern spores, and a decrease in herbaceous pollen, while the patterning during the glacial periods is just the opposite. During the interglacial periods, pollen assemblages were dominated by pine similar to those of the present day, suggesting that the paleoenvironment of the interglacial periods was similar to that of the present day, whereas the glacial periods are marked by an increase in herbaceous pollen, mainly Gramineae and Cyperaceae, indicating that grassland covered the exposed continental shelf when sea level declined. Increased Artemisia percentages and the highest pine influx during MIS12.may result from a stronger winter monsoon.

Structural pattern of eastern Himalayan syntaxis in Namjagbarwa and its formation process

The structural pattern of the eastern Himalayan syntaxis in Namjagbarwa consists of two series of structures with different styles. One series compiles the earlier ductile contractional and lateral-slip deformation system, formed by nearly north-south shortening within the syntaxis, left-lateral and right-lateral slipping along its western and eastern boundaries respectively. They were possibly produced by the indentation of the Indian continent into Asian continent after India-Asia collision. The peak deformation-metamorphic ages in these structures are 62.60 Ma, ~2. Ma and ~13 Ma. The other series is composed of ductile-brittle normal faults distributing concentrically and dipping toward the outsides of Namjagbarwa Peak. They were probably the collapse structures caused by rapid uplift in a later time and the beginning ages for the normal faulting are about 7.3-6.3 Ma.
