Foxtail millet {Setaria italica) is one of the oldest domesticated cereal crops in Eurasia,but identifying foxtail millets, especially in charred grains,and differentiating it from its wild ancestor,green foxtail {Setaria viridis),in the archaeobotanical remains,is still *** analysis provides a meaningful method for identifying this important *** this paper,the silicon structure patterns in the glumes,lemmas,and paleas from inflorescence bracts in 16 modern plants of foxtail millet and green foxtail from china and Europe are examined using light microscopy with phase-contrast and a microscopic *** research shows that the silicon structure of QUI from upper lemmas and paleas in foxtail millet and green foxtail can be correspondingly divided into two *** size ofΩⅢtype phytolith of foxtail millet is bigger than that from green *** function analysis reveals that 78.4%of data on foxtail millet and 76.9%of data on green foxtail are correctly *** means certain morphotypes of phytoliths are relatively reliable tools for distinguishing foxtail millet from green *** results also revealed that the husk phytolith morphologies of foxtail millets from china and Eastern Europe are markedly different from those from Western *** research gives a meaningful method of separating foxtail millet and green *** implications of these findings for understanding the history of foxtail millet domestication and cultivation in ancient civilizations are significant.

Allelic Variation and genetic Diversity at Glu-1 Loci in Chinese Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) Germplasms

Wheat processing quality is greatly influenced by the seed proteins especially the high molecular weight glutenin subunit (HMW-GS) components, the low molecular weight glutenin subunit (LMW-GS) components and gliadin components. genes encoding the HMW-GS and LMW-GS components were located on the long arms and the short arms of homoeologous group 1 chromosomes, respectively. HMW-GS components in 5 129 accessions of wheat germplasms were analyzed systematically, including 3 459 landraces and 1 670 modern varieties. These accessions were chosen as candidate core collections to represent the genetic diversity of Chinese common wheat ( Triticum aestivum) germplasms documented and conserved in the national gene Bank. These candidate core collections covered the 10 wheat production regions in china. In the whole country, the dominating alleles at the three loci are Glu-A1b (null), Glu-B1b (7 + 8), and Glu-D1a (2 + 12), respectively. The obvious difference between the land race and the modern variety is the dramatic frequency increase of alleles Glu-A1a (1), Glu-B1c (7 + 9), Glu-B1h (14 + 15), Glu-D1d (5 + 10) and allele cording 5 + 12 subunits in the later ones. In the whole view, there is minor difference on the genetic(allelic)richness between the landrace and the modern variety at Glu-1, which is 28 and 30 respectively. However, the genetic dispersion index (Simpson index) based on allelic variation and frequencies at Glu-A1, Glu-B1 and Glu-D1 suggested that the modern varieties had much higher genetic diversity than the landraces. This revealed that various isolating mechanisms (such as auto-gamous nature, low migration because of undeveloped transposition system) limited the gene flow and exchange between populations of the landraces, which led up to some genotypes localized in very small areas. Modern breeding has strongly promoted gene exchanges and introgression between populations and previous isolated populations. In the three loci, Glu-Bl has the highest genetic

Three coding sequences of gliadins genes, designed as Gli2_Du1, Gli2_Du2 and Gli2_Du3, were isolated from thegenomic DNA of Triticum durum accessions CItr5083. Gli2_Du1 and Gli2_Du2 contain 945 and 864 bp, encoding themature proteins with 314 and 287 amino acid residues, respectively. Gli2_Du3 is recognized as a pseudogene due to thestop codon occurring in the coding region. The pseudogenes, commonly occurring in gliadins family, are attributed to thesingle base change C → T. The amino acid sequences deduced from these gene sequences were characterized with thetypical structure of α-gliadin proteins, including the toxic sequences (PSQQQP). The peptide fraction PF(Y)PP(Q) isthought to be an extra unit of repetitive domain, slightly diverging from the previous report. Six cysteine residues wereobserved within two unique domains. Phylogenetic analysis showed Gli2_Du2 and Gli2_Du3 were closely related to thegenes on chromosome 6A, whereas Gli2_Du1 seems to be more homologous with the genes on chromosome 6B.
