Insights into correlation between satellite infrared information and fault activities

Tectonic activities are accompanied with material movement and energy transfer, which definitely change the state of thermal radiation on the ground. Thus it is possible to infer present-day tectonic activities based on variations of the thermal radiation state on the ground. The received satellite infrared information is, however, likely influenced by many kinds of factors. Therefore, the first problem that needs to be solved is to extract information on tectonic activities and eliminate effects of external (non-tectonic) factors. In this study, we firstly make a review of the current studies on this subject, and then present the technical approach and our research goal. Using the data of 20 years from the infrared band of the satellite of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the method we have developed, we investigate fault activities in western china. The results show that the areas with high residual values of land surface brightness temperature (LSBT), which is presumably related to faultings in space, accord usually with the locations of followed major earthquakes. The times of their value growing are also roughly consistent with the beginning of active periods of earthquakes. The low frequency component fields of the LSBT, acquired from wavelet analysis, exhibit well the spatial distributions of active faults. The "heat penetrability index" (HPI) related with enhancement of subsurface thermal information has been expressed well for the backgrounds of accelerated tectonic motions, and some correlations exist between HPI and the local faulting and seismicity. This study provides a new approach to study temporal-spatial evolution of recent activities of faults and their interactions.

It is commonly accepted that the climate records in chinese loess can be correlated well with that in marine ***,discrepancies for the stratigraphic position of paleomagnetic polarity reversal boundary seriously restrict an accurate teleconnection between these two *** example,the exact stratigraphic position of the whole Matuyama-Brunhes(MB) transitional polarity zone remains uncertain in chinese loess. In this study,an accurate transitional zone of the MB reversal from the Mangshan profile,southeast margin of the chinese Loess Plateau(CLP),was statistically determined using multiple subsets of parallel *** integrating results from the central CLP,the whole MB transitional zone is consistently located across the pedostratigraphic and climatostratigraphic transitional zones between S8 and L8 over a wide region of the *** conclusion further supports that the paleosol unit SS should be teleconnected to the marine oxygen isotope stage 19 rather than 21,and thus unambiguously supplies an accurate age control in constructing a new loess time scale.

An accurate thermodynamic model is proposed to predict the thermodynamic stability of methane hydrate in marine environments and methane concentration needed to form hydrate in the absence of gas *** into account the effect of capillary force and salinity on chemical potential of CH and HO,this study extends the Van der Waals-Platteeuw model and our approach to calculate the Langmuir constant from angle-dependent ab initio intermolecular potentials to marine *** Gibbs-Thomson equation with correct parameters for hydrate-water interface is used to account for the capillary effect of porous *** Pitzer model is used to calculate the activity coefficients of HO and CH in methane-seawater system. Comparison with the experimental data shows that this model can predict the equilibrium P-T condition of CH hydrate in porous media and predict CH solubility at hydrate-water equilibrium with high *** prediction of this model shows that CH solubility in liquid phase at hydrate-liquid equilibrium will be reduced by increasing salinity,but it will be increased by reducing pore sizes of porous *** calculations of the P-T condition for the formation of methane hydrate and the methane solubility at a given salinity and pore sizes of sediments is made available on:***/***. Ultramafic xenoliths in Mesozoic diorite in west Shandong Province

Ultramafic xenoliths are common in Tietonggou intrusion, Laiwu, Shandong Prov-ince. Peridotite xenoliths develop two-stage metasomatism popularly: (i) The early metasoma-tism is characterized by intergranular clinopyroxene and phlogopite; (ii) The later metasomatism is characterized by orthopyroxene veins with a few plagioclases and amphiboles. These ul-tramafic xenoliths are thought to be mostly from the crust-mantle transitional zone on the basis of their combination, mineral chemistry, equilibrium temperature, and metasomatic characteristics. Major elements, rare earth elements, and Sr-Nd isotopic composition of the ultramafic xenoliths indicate that there is a petrogenetic relationship between the silica-enriched xenoliths and their host diorites. We propose that such silica enrichment might be an indicator of melt-rock interac-tions in the Mesozoic lithosphere beneath western Shandong.

To further investigate the mechanism of acoustic emission (AE) in the rock fracture experiment, moment tensor analysis was carried out. The AE sources characterized by crack sizes, orientations and fracture modes, are represented by a time-dependent moment tensor. Since the waveforms recorded by AE monitors correlate to the moment tensors, we prefer to select the P wave amplitude from the full-space Green's function of homogeneous and isotropic materials to determine the six independent components of the moment tensor. The moment tensor analysis was used to investigate the AE sources recorded in the experiment, and three types of micro-cracks were found, which are tensile mode, shear mode and mixture of the tensile and shear mode. In addition, the motion of micro-cracks was decided by eigenvectors of moment tensor. Results indicate that the moment tensor analysis may be used as a measurement to reflect the damage evolution of rock specimen.

The virtual amplifier design employed in the ThermoElectron multi-collector mass spectrometers is a novel innovation for high precision isotopic *** the virtual amplifiers,uncertainties of gain factors of amplifiers can be effectively averaged out,so that accuracy and external reproducibility on isotopic measurement can be *** paper presents a new calculation method on isotopic measurement using the virtual amplifier mass spectrometers such as ThermoElectron Triton and *** the calculation method,gain factors of the amplifiers can be completely eliminated out for both raw measured isotopic ratios and normalized isotopic ratios when exponential or power law is used to correct isotope fractionation effect,and therefore,gain calibration is unnecessary even for the high precision measurement purpose.

The Paleoproterozoic Khondalite belt in the North china craton preserves evidence for ultrahigh- temperature(UHT) crustal metamorphism associated with the collision of the Yinshan and Ordos *** we apply two-feldspar geothermometry to UHT granulites from two localities newly reported in this study(Tuguishan and Xuwujia) and another two localities from previous studies(Dajing /Tuguiwula and Dongpo) in the Khondalite *** presence of abundant perthite/mesoperthite in these rocks reflects post-peak slow *** minimum estimated peak metamorphic temperatures are 832-998,819-952,844-1037,and 966-1019℃computed at 8 kbar for the Dajing/Tuguiwula, Dongpo,Tuguishan,and Xuwujia areas,*** results confirm the previous report of extreme metamorphism at Dajing/Tuguiwula and Dongpo,and reveal similar conditions in the new localities reported here,suggesting that UHT metamorphism is widespread in the Khondalite belt of the North china *** study demonstrates that UHT metamorphism can be recognized using the two-feldspar geothermometry in rocks that do not possess other key UHT assemblages.

Based on our previous study of the intermolecular potential for pure HO and the strict evaluation of the competitive potential models for pure CH and the ab initio fitting potential surface across CH-HO molecules in this study,we carried out more than two thousand molecular dynamics simulations for the PVTx properties of pure CH and the CH-HO mixtures up to 2573 K and 10 *** of 1941 simulations with experimental PVT data for pure CH shows an average deviation of 0.96%and a maximum deviation of 2.82%.The comparison of the results of 519 simulations of the mixtures with the experimental measurements reveals that the PVTx properties of the CH-HO mixtures generally agree with the extensive experimental data with an average deviation of 0.83%and 4%in maximum,which is equivalent to the experimental uncertainty. Moreover,the maximum deviation between the experimental data and the simulation results decreases to about 2% as temperature and pressure increase,indicating that the high accuracy of the simulation is well retained in the high temperature and pressure region. After the validation of the simulation method and the intermolecular potential models,we systematically simulated the PVTx properties of this binary system from 673 K and 0.05 GPa to 2573 K and 10 *** order to integrate all the simulation results and the experimental data for the calculation of thermodynamic properties,an equation of state(EOS) is developed for the CH-HO system covering 673-2573 K and 0.01-10 *** for compositions4 mol%CH up to 773 K and 600 MPa are also determined in this *** program for the EOS can be downloaded from ***/ ***.

Two new species of Vestrogothia (Phosphatocopina, Crustacea) of Orsten-type preservation from the Upper Cambrian in western Hunan, South china

Although fossils of Orsten-type preservation represented by Skaracarida and Phosphatocopina were first reported from the Middle and Upper Cambrian in western Hunan, South china in 2005, diversified phosphatocopine species have never been appropriately described and elucidated in terms of their evolutionary relationships. Here, we described two new species of Phosphatocopina, Vestrogothia anterispinata sp. nov. and V. bispinata sp. nov. The evolutionary relationship among all the valid species of Phosphatocopina is discussed and the phylogeny of Phosphatocopina is reestablished using cladistic analysis. Accordingly, phosphatocopines primitively evolved along two lineages: one evolved towards the emergence of lobes; the other evolved towards the emergence of dorsal spines. Respectively, lobes originated independently three times, and dorsal spines originated only once. With regard to the dorsal rims, interdorsum originated first, whereas dorsal furrow originated independently twice on the basis of interdorsum. Probably Hesslandona may represent a polyphyletic group, whereas Vestrogothia a monophyletic group.

SUMMARY We obtained the crustal thickness(H) and average Vp/Vs ratio(κ) for the central(CNCC) and western North china Craton(WNCC) by H-κstacking of receiver *** results show that H andκvaries significantly but similarly in the northern and southern CNCC,reflecting possible effects of the Phanerozoic cratonotic reactivation on the *** the WNCC,the south is featured byκvalues typical for Precambrian shields(～1.77) and variations of H mirroring surface topography;the north presents large fluctuations ofκ(1.68-1.93) and a crustal thickening(up to 50 km) uncorrelated with *** N-S differences were thought to be associated with a～1.95-Ga suturing event occurred in the north with little effects on the *** observations suggest that distinct structural heterogeneities of the NCC not only reflect diverse regional tectonics in Phanerozoic,but also provide evidence for long-term survival of crustal fabrics in stable continental interior.
