Aim:The resurgence of severe acute respiratory syndrome(SARS)is still a threatbecause the causative agent remaining in animal reservoirs is not fully understood,and sporadic cases continue to be *** high titers of anti-SARShyperimmune globulin to provide an alternative pathway for emergent future pre-vention and treatment of ***:SARS coronavims(CoV)F69(AY313906)and Z2-Y3(AY394989)were isolated and identified from 2 different Cantoneseonset SARS *** was prepared from SARS-CoV F69 *** horses were immunized 4 times and serum was collected periodically tomeasure the profile of specific IgG and neutralizing antibodies using indirect en-zyme-linked immunosorbent assay and a microneutralization *** were col-lected in large amounts at the peak,where IgG was precipitated using ammoniumsulphate and subsequently digested with *** product was then purifiedusing anion-exchange chromatography to obtain F(ab′)2 fragments,Results:Thespecific IgG and neutralizing antibody titers peaked at approximately week 7 afterthe first immunization,with a maximum value of 1:*** sera collected at thepeak were then *** of approximately 15 g F(ab′)2 was obtained from1 litre antiserum and the purity was above 90% with the titer of 1:5120,which couldneutralize the other strain(SARS-CoV Z2-Y3)as ***:This researchprovides a viable strategy for the prevention and treatment of SARS coronavirusinfection with equine hyperimmune globulin,with the purpose of combating anyresurgence of SARS.

Cloning and Identification of Two Novel Splice Variants of Human PD-L2

PD-L2, a newly identified member of B7 family, plays a role in down-regulating T cell responses. The common PD-L2 mRNA (type I) is the splicing product containing all 6 exons. We report here the identification of two human PD-L2 splice variants in activated leukocytes. One splice variant (type II) is generated through splicing out exon 3 encoding Igconstant-like domain; it retains all other regions without a frame shift. The other variant (type III) is created by splicing out exon 3 to an alternative acceptor site 5 bp downstream of the canonical acceptor site, leading to a frame shift. Consequently, the translated protein should be a soluble form. Furthermore, type I isoform is expressed on the plasma surface whereas type II isoform showed a pattern of intracellular membrane distribution in the transiently transfected K562 cells. In addition, the expression patterns of PD-L2 splice variants are variable in different individuals and distinct cellular status. These results suggest that PD-L2 expression may be controlled by posttranscriptional regula- tion through alternative splicing, and modulation of PD-L2 isoform expression may influence the outcome of immune response.

Comparative studies on zooplankton community between the sea surface microlayer and the subsurface microlayer in Daya Bay, china

Characteristics of the zooplankton community inhabiting the sea surface microlayer (SM) and the sub-surface microlayer (SSM) are compared at six sampling stations in Daya Bay, near Shenzhen City of china during 2 cruises in 1999. This is the first study on zooplankton community in the SM in china. Results show that protozoans and nauplii are the most dominant components, accounting for 80.71% (SM) and 89.15% (SSM) of the total zooplankton in the average abundance, respectively. The densities of copepods (adult + copepodid) are higher in the SSM than in the SM. The size-frequency distributions indicate that the frequency of micro-zooplankton (4 with the average value of 2.267. The SM zooplankton community structure revealed in the present study is quite different from previous investigations in the Bay. Typical sea water characteristics such as turbidity, biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP) and chlorophyll a (Chl-a) indicate that the water quality is poorer in the SM than in the SSM.

Nonlinear integral and discrete inequalities are obtained. which are related to some recent results of B. C. Pachpatte in [1] given therein as generalizations of Ou-Iang’s integral inequality[2]. As special cases, some new inequalities with the power nonlinearity are derived from the main results. To show the contribution of our results, boundedness of solutions to certain nonlinear difference equation is also considered.

The combination of shearing interferometer, Fourier-transform profilometry, phase unwrapping by lockup table method has resulted in a new and more powerful method of measuring surface profile. The technique permits the three-dimensional shape measurement of objects that have discontinuous height steps. Experimental results have demonstrated the validity of the principle.

Determining the Optimal Solution Set for Linear Fractional Programming

The structure of the optimal solution set is derived for linear fractional programming with the representation theorem of polyhedral sets. Based on an adaptation of the convex simplex method credited to Gilmore and Gomory, we give the uniqueness condition of optimal solution and the computational procedures to find all optimal solutions if the uniqueness condition is not satisfied. Finally, an illustrative example is also given.

The images of the open cluster NGC2168 are taken using the newly-fitted 2k×2k CCD attached to the 1-m telescope at the Yun-nan Observatory with two different orientations. After the catalogue position of a star from UCAC2 is compared with its corresponding measured position, a surprising result shows that a small field of view (about 7′×7′) exhibits an obvious distortion. Spe-cifically, the polynomial between the standard coordinate (ξ,η) and its corresponding measured one (x,y) for a star in each field of view has significant terms as high as 4th order. Accordingly, the positional measurement accuracy of a bright UCAC2 star can be derived as well as ~7 mas in each direction (60 s of exposure time and near the zenith). This new finding would be important for a CCD image to deliver a highly accurate position in its whole field of view.
