- Starting from satellite remote sensing data, the dynamical processes of shear waves occurring at the boundary between the western boundary current and the shelf slope water are studied and dynamically analyzed in this study. The average wavelength is 75 km, and the average amplitude (from crest to trough )17 km. the average phase speed 100 cms-1 for the shear waves along the north wall of the Gulf Stream to the east of Cape Hatteras measured from NOAA satellite IR (infrared ) images. The average wavelength of shear waves along the north wall of the Kuroshio Current is 57 km, and the average amplitude 17 km. For the shear waves occurring along the west wall of the Gulf Stream to the south of Cape Hatteras, the average wavelength is 131 km, and the average amplitude 33 km measured from Seasat SAR (synthetic aperture radar )images. The time for one cycle of shear wave event is about one *** order to explore the dynamical mechanisms of shear waves, we solved the vorticity equation for a stratified fluid, and obtained an analytical expression of dispersion relation of shear waves. The results indicated that there was a parabolic relation between the phase speed and the wavelength of shear waves, and the mean flow field was an important factor in the dispersion relation. The latter point means that the horizontal tangent variation of velocity is a basic condition for shear wave occurrence. Theoretical analyses are confirmed by satellite remote sensing data.

Research on Lamelllbranchiate fossils of the Huanghai Sea started rather late in china and data on this subject are scarce. During the large-scale investigation of the Huanghai Sea sediment in the late 1970s, a large number of surface and core samples of the sea-floor sediment were obtained and a considerable number of Lamellibranchiatc fossils were found. Based on the data measured during Arctic scientific expedition of china in 1999, the characteristics of temperature and salinity distributions around the Chukchi Plateau and its ad-jacent regions have been studied. It was found that the intermediate water with temperature higher than 0.5℃ existed in all parts of a 640 km section with a maximum temperature of 0.85℃ indicating a strong signal of the warming in Arctic Intermediate Water in 1999. Two important phenomena are described in this paper. first, the temperature of warm water was horizontally nonuniform. In the area of Chukchi Plateau, the temperature was higher, the layer of warm water was thicker and the depth of the warm water core was shallower than those in the area of con-tinental slope. The horizontal nonuniformity of the temperature distribution of warming water im-plies that the upward heat flux should also be nonuniform, thus exerting different effects on sea ice thickness, ice extent, and air-sea heat exchange. The mechanism to generate higher tem-perature in the plateau region was the bypassing of current around the plateau area caused by the special local topography, which restricted water exchange across the plateau and conserved heat in the water body. Second, the deep water down to 1400 m was also warming with a tem-perature increase of 0.2℃. The warming in deep water reflects the occurrence of complicated heat redistribution processes in the intermediate water, which altered the thermal structure in the upper 1400 m. The warming data embody the obvious impact of global climate change on the Arctic Ocean and further studies are wanted.

REE and Sr-Nd isotope characteristics of hydrothermal chimney at Jade area in the Okinawa Trough

Hydrothermal chimney is a product of hydrothermal activity on the seabed. Chimney samples dredged from Jade hydrothermal area in Izena depression of the Okinawa Trough, are characterized by relatively enriched light rare earth elements (LREE) and strongly positive Eu anomalies. 87Sr/86Sr and 143Nd/144Nd of these samples are exactly between those of seawater and of acidic pumice, averaged at 0.708928 and 0.512292, respectively. These characteristics imply that the main source of hydrothermal sulfide at Jade area is possibly the undersurface acidic rocks. The mineralizing mechanism can be summarized as follows: Large amount of mineralized material would be leached out and LREE-enriched hydrothermal solution would be subsequently produced as a result of thermo-chemical exchange reaction between acidic volcanic rocks and heated seawater that penetrated in advance from upper water mass. The spurting out from the seabed and quickly crystallizing in the seawater of hydrothermal solution are responsible for the formation of Cu-Zn sulfide and barite-amorphous SiO2 minerals that are characterized by enriched LREE and positively strong Eu anomalies.

The relationship between sea surface temperature anomaly(SSTA) and wind energy input in the Pacific Ocean over the period of 1949-2003 is studied by using daily-mean NOAA/NCEP wind stress and monthly mean Reynolds SST *** results indicate the strong negative correlation between SSTA and local wind energy input to surface waves in most of the domain at low and middle *** SST is low(high) during the years with more(less) wind energy *** correlation coefficients are high in the central and eastern tropical Pacific and the central midlatitude North Pacific at the decadal scale,and in the central tropical Pacific at the interannual *** mixing processes in the upper ocean are closely associated with wind energy input,indicating that wind energy input may play an important role in interannual and decadal variability in the Pacific Ocean via regulating vertical mixing.

Five experiment ecosystems (MEEE) were employed in April, 1985 to test the effects of a mixture of Cu, Cd, Hg, Pb and Zn on a subtropical planktonic ecosystem in Xiamen Bay, Xiamen, china. The results indicated that the ppb-level of the mixture could suppress the planktonic production. Zooplankton in Xiamen were very sensitive to the metal contamination, especially the larvaceans.

In this paper, on the basis of the heat conduction equation without consideration of the advection and turbulence effects, one-dimensional model for describing surface sea temperature ( T1), bottom sea temperature ( Tt ) and the thickness of the upper homogeneous layer ( h ) is developed in terms of the dimensionless temperature θT and depth η and self-simulation function θT - f(η) of vertical temperature profile by means of historical temperature *** results of trial prediction with our one-dimensional model on T, Th, h , the thickness and gradient of thermocline are satisfactory to some extent.

-Morphology, reproduction, ecology and isoenzyme electrophoresis of a Capitella complex in qingdao were examined from 1983 to 1984. We determined that the Capitella complex in qingdao was composed of at least three sibling species: Capitella cf capitata, Capitella sp. I and Capitella sp. IT. Although these three species are very similar in morphology, they differ in: three kinds of isoenzyme electrophoresis, staining reactions, developmental pattern, larval morphology and dispersal, reproductive strategies, breeding season and population ecology. In addition, they show a series of minor quantitative variations in adult morphology, especially in number and morphology of setae. Such differences can be detected only at the population level. Some ecological data such as density, growth rate, mortality and sex distribution are also provided in this paper.
