Based on regional compensation model and experimental isostasy, the isostatic response function of the Okinawa Trough is calculated by using gravity and topographic data. The results are shown as follows: the effective elastic thickness of the plate and compensation depth in the southern Okinawa Trough is obviously greater than those in the middle Okinawa Trough. In reference with other geological and geophysical data, the differences between the two portions are explained to be caused mainly by their differences in temperature of the lithosphere and the compensation mechanism.

Based on compositive analysis and interpretation of the observed and historical data, the geophysical field characters and structural properties of the Gagua “Wedge” Zone of the sea area east of Taiwan Island and the primary tectonic stress direction and its variabilities of backarc spreading in the southern Okinawa Trough are studied. It is concluded from the study results that the Gagua “Wedge” Zone is structurally consistent with the Gagua ridge and two fault basins on both sides of the Gagua ridge, and adjusts the moving direction and distance of the western Philippine Sea plate to make the northwestward motion of the plate on its east side change to the northward subduction of the plate on its west side so that the primary tectonic stress direction of the Okinawa Trough changed from NW-SE to nearly N-S, which provided the stress source for the Okinawa Trough to enter the second spreading stage.

A persistent, year-round NE-SW front is found to exist inside the Hangzhou Bay. This front is actually the merging of the secondary Changjiang plume front from the bay mouth and the Qiantang plume front from the upstream side of the bay. During neap tides low runoff periods these two plumes can readily be identified. Our findings suggest that suspended matter is transported into the bay through the north end by the secondary Changjiang plume. The front inside the bay acts the part of concentrating suspended matter, and also plays an important role in both the fine-grained sediment and heavy metal distributions in this sedimentary basin.

The clay minerals in the surface sediments from 354 stations have been analyzed qualita-tively and semiquantitatively. The obtained data are dealt mathematically. According to thecalculated results, the distribution laws and the trends of content changes of clay mineralsare discussed. The studied area is divided into four main provinces of sediments with differ-ent sources. Finally the author approached the laws of the migration and dispersal of thefine-grained matter carried into the seas by the Huanghe River, the Changjiang River, theZhujiang River and the Philippine Archipelagoes, and set up the transport model of the fine-grained matter in the china Sea and adjacent seas.

A one-dimentional three-layer model for the thermal structure in the Huanghai Sea is presented in this study, me model consists of the upper mixed layer caused by heating and wind mixing, the lower mixed layer driven by tidal mixing, and the thermocline with certain thickness. The entrainment velocities of the upper and lower layers are obtained respectively. The results show that the model is capable of describing the development and decline processes of the seasonal thermocline in the Huanghai Sea, simulating successfully the Huanghai Sea Cold Water Mass, the nearshore front and surface cold water off North Jiangsu and explaining reasonably their formation mechanisms as well as the strong thermocline off qingdao. It is suggested that the tidal mixing plays key role in the formation of the nearshore front off North Jiangsu and the strong thermocline off qingdao. The wind mixing and the tidal mixing make the lower layer water with high nutrients go up to the upper layer. This physical process may be significant for biological plant production.

According to the morphology, wall structure, color, ornamentation, etc., 25 species belonging to 9 genera are identified and described from 144 sediment samples of the Xiamen Harbor, the mouth of the Minjiang River and the Sansha Bay. Among them there are 2 toxic species: Alexandrium minutun,A. tamarenes, 4 harmful species: Alexandrium affine,Lingulodinium polX drum, Scrippsiella trochoide,Gonyaulax spinifera. It shows that 11 species of dinoflagellate cysts (Alexandrium affine, A. minutum, Diplopelta cf. parva, Polykrikos cf. schwartzii, protoceratium reticulatum, Protoperidinium minutum, P. cf. minutum, P. cf americanum and Alexandrium sp., Protoperidinium sp. 1, P. sp. 2) are first recorded along the coast of Fujian Province, china. These newly discovered species might be transported to the coastal sea of Fujian Province by ballast water of international trade vessels.

The propagation attenuation of sound wave in liquid with the surficial sediment of ocean is discussed. Considering suspended particles in the shape of nonspheroid. we have improved the theory on sound attenuation and compared the theoretical values with the measured ones. The results indicate that the theory modified is in stricter accordance with the actual situation.

The ridge like seafloor highs with various geological origins can be classed into mid-ocean ridges,transverse ridges related to transform faults,hot spot/mantle plume originated ridges,microcontinent rifted from major continent,intra-plate arc formed by interaction of two oceanic plates,and tectonic ridges uplifted by later tectonic *** ridges moved towards the convergent continental margins along with the underlain plate drifting and formed so-called accreted ridges commonly trending at a high angle to the continental *** divergent continental margins,the continental crusts were extended and thinned accompanying with magmatism,which formed high terrains protruding or parallel to the coastal *** ridges worldwide have various origins and the crustal thicknesses and structures of them are *** crusts beneath the microcontinents,and the transverse ridges along the transform margin,and the seafloor highs beside the passive continental margins are continental,while the crusts of other ridges are *** 76 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea （UNCLOS） has classed the seafloor highs worldwide into three legal categories,namely oceanic ridges,submarine ridges and submarine elevations,for the purpose to delineate the outer limit of the coastal states＇ continental shelf beyond 200 nautical *** define the categories of the legal seafloor highs to which the ridges with various geological origins belong,the continuities in morphology and geology including the rock types,crustal structures,origins and tectonic setting of the ridges and the coastal states＇ land mass with its submerged prolongation should be taken into *** a ridge is continuous both in morphology and geology with the coastal states＇ land mass and its submerged prolongation,it is a submarine elevation stipulated in Article *** it is discontinuous in morphology,the ridge should be regarded as oceanic *** a ridge is continuous in morphology

According to two cruises investigation information in summer and winter during 1998 and 1999, the phosphorous concentration distribution and changes of summer and winter were discussed primarily in the South china Sea. The results show that the phosphate concentration of surface seawater in summer is distinctly lower than that in winter, averaging 0.04 mumol/dm(3) in summer and 0.35 mumol/ dm(3) in winter. The organic phosphorous concentration of surface seawater in summer is higher than that in winter, averaging 0.12 mumol/dm(3) in summer and 0. 04 mumol/dm(3) in winter respectively. The seasonal changes of total phosphorus are similar to phosphate, averaging 0.22 mumol/dm(3) in summer and 0.61 mumol/dm(3) in winter respectively. In vertical direction, phosphate, TDP and TP content are the lowest in upper 50 m water column, and increase in linearity rapidly with water depth, increasing slowly under 500 m, reach to maximum about 1000 m, then decrease slightly with water depth increasing. The vertical distribution is typical in summer, and there is small dispersed for phosphorus concentration for the same depth of different stations. However, in winter there is a large disperse for phosphate, TDP and TP, specifically for phosphate at 200 m at which the concentration is maximum. This result indicates that there are large differences in hydrology and biology conditions that affect largely the chemical environment of the South china Sea. The organic phosphorus is the predominant in surface seawater of the South china Sea, but the inorganic phosphorus is the predominant in layers below depth of 150 m. The organic phosphorus concentration in deep water usually decreases with water depth increasing. The organic phosphorus in summer is remarkably more than that in winter because of the strong biology activities in summer.
