Warming in Arctic intermediate and deep waters around Chukchi Plateau and its adjacent regions in 1999

Based on the data measured during Arctic scientific expedition of china in 1999, the characteristics of temperature and salinity distributions around the Chukchi Plateau and its ad-jacent regions have been studied. It was found that the intermediate water with temperature higher than 0.5℃ existed in all parts of a 640 km section with a maximum temperature of 0.85℃ indicating a strong signal of the warming in Arctic Intermediate Water in 1999. Two important phenomena are described in this paper. First, the temperature of warm water was horizontally nonuniform. In the area of Chukchi Plateau, the temperature was higher, the layer of warm water was thicker and the depth of the warm water core was shallower than those in the area of con-tinental slope. The horizontal nonuniformity of the temperature distribution of warming water im-plies that the upward heat flux should also be nonuniform, thus exerting different effects on sea ice thickness, ice extent, and air-sea heat exchange. The mechanism to generate higher tem-perature in the plateau region was the bypassing of current around the plateau area caused by the special local topography, which restricted water exchange across the plateau and conserved heat in the water body. Second, the deep water down to 1400 m was also warming with a tem-perature increase of 0.2℃. The warming in deep water reflects the occurrence of complicated heat redistribution processes in the intermediate water, which altered the thermal structure in the upper 1400 m. The warming data embody the obvious impact of global climate change on the Arctic ocean and further studies are wanted.

Calcium is a secondary messenger in plant signaling, and its concentration changes spatially and temporally during the course of heat stress. In the present study, potassium antimonate was used to visualize calcium localization in blades of a marine macroalga, the juvenile Laminaria japonica sporophytes under heat stress (25 °C). Result showed that loosely bound calcium was mainly distributed on the cell wall under normal conditions (10 °C), and flowed into the cytoplasm when exposed to heat. The simutaneous assay on the antioxidant system changes was performed. Oxidative damage, as measured by generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) malondialdehyde (MDA) content, increased significantly during heat stress, and calcium pretreatment alleviated oxidative damage. The assay on the activities of six antioxidant enzymes demonstrated that their enzymatic activities were inhibited when exposed to heat stress, but Ca2+ pretreatment effectively attenuated the inhibition. Results in the present study inferred that calcium homeostasis plays an essential role in L. japonica sporophyte when exposed to heat, and calcium pretreatment could improve its thermo-tolerance.

The Taiwan Warm Current （TWC） and the Tsushima Warm Current （TSWC） flow northward over the shelf in the East china Sea （ECS）, which some previous studies regard as a Taiwan-Tsushima Warm Current （TTWC） System. But the roles of the TWC and TSWC in the formation of the TTWC system have not been clarified. This article will show that the TSWC is more important in the TTWC system. Using a three-dimensional baroclinic model, we conducted several numerical experiments to reveal the dynamic relationship between the TWC and TSWC. The results show that the TWC has little effect on the TSWC, while the TSWC has a significant effect on the TWC. A source-sink driven mechanism along isobaths may be used to explain this phenomenon The perennial northward flow through the Tsushima Strait pumps the response over the northern shelf in the ECS that gives rise to the TWC. Although the TSWC is located at the ＂downstream＂ region, it could induce about 0.5 Sv to TWC in annual mean values.

With the increase in mining depth, mine heat harm has appeared to be more prominent. The mine heat harm could be resolvedor reduced by ice refrigeration. Thus, ice transportation through pipeline becomes a critical problem; typically flowresistance occurs in the elbow. In the present study, according to the analysis of the surface morphology of fish scale, abiomimetic functional surface structure for the interior wall of elbow is designed. Based on the theory of liquid-solid two phaseflow, a CFD numerical simulation of ice-water mixture flowing through the elbow is carried out using finite element *** experiments of pressure drop and flow resistance for both bionic and common elbows are conducted to test theeffect of the bionic elbow on flow resistance reduction. It is found that with the increase in the ice mass fraction in the ice-watermixture, the effect of bionic elbow on resistance reduction becomes more obvious.

To investigate the nonlinear properties of wind waves, experiments are carried out in a wind-wave flume with slope bottom at different wind speeds and fetches. Both the internal structure and apparent features of the nonlin-earity of wind waves are studied by using bispectral and statistical analysis of surface elevations. The relations between bispectra and nonlinear apparent characteristics of wind waves are established and confirmed.

The optimal output tracking control (OTC) problem for nonlinear systems with time-delay is *** a series-based approx- imate approach,the original OTC problem is transformed into iteration solving linear two-point boundary value problems without time- *** OTC law obtained consists of analytical linear feedback and feedforward terms and a nonlinear compensation term with an infinite series of the adjoint *** truncating a finite sum of the adjoint vector series,an approximate optimal tracking control law is obtained.A reduced-order reference input observer is constructed to make the feedforward term physically *** exam- ples are used to test the validity of the series-based approximate approach.

Using the data specially observed on the Bohai Sea oil platform by the authors for studying thermocline for two weeks, the thermocline depth, the temperature and the salinity of the layers below and above the thermocline were numerically modelled. The model is based on the Stigebrandt model and some important supplements are made in this paper in accordance with the local condition of the sea. The modelling results fit well in the observations. It is proved that the entrainmem due to both the tide and the wind can give rise to rather intense mixing cross the thermocline. This process makes the temperature rising below the thermocline,and causes the nutrient increasing above it,which has important significance for the marine physical environment and the marine organism.

Based on compositive analysis and interpretation of the observed and historical data, the geophysical field characters and structural properties of the Gagua “Wedge” Zone of the sea area east of Taiwan Island and the primary tectonic stress direction and its variabilities of backarc spreading in the southern Okinawa Trough are studied. It is concluded from the study results that the Gagua “Wedge” Zone is structurally consistent with the Gagua ridge and two fault basins on both sides of the Gagua ridge, and adjusts the moving direction and distance of the western Philippine Sea plate to make the northwestward motion of the plate on its east side change to the northward subduction of the plate on its west side so that the primary tectonic stress direction of the Okinawa Trough changed from NW-SE to nearly N-S, which provided the stress source for the Okinawa Trough to enter the second spreading stage.

In case of considering the fact that the tropical ocean thermocline or the lower at-mosphere height field has the meridional variation, the topographic Rossby wave will be excited. Also the background geostrophic current emerges. Under such conditions, the topographic Rossby wave can interact with the classical Rossby wave at some parameter band and thus brings a new kind of instability, which may be of potential application in understanding some phenomena of the ENSO cycle.
