The Arabidopsis EDT1/HDG11,a homeodomain-START transcription factor,was previously demonstrated to confer improved drought tolerance and increased biomass when overexpressed in the Arabidopsis and transgenic tobacco(Yu et al.,2008).Here we report that overexpression of the dicot AtHDG11 in monocot rice,one of the most important cereals in the world,also confers similar phenotypes to those observed in the edt1 and transgenic tobacco,which include enhanced drought tolerance,improved root system, reduced stomatal density,increased photosynthesis and water use *** importantly,through five consecutive year’s field trials transgenic rice showed consistent and significant yield increase under both normal and drought stressed conditions, demonstrating the efficacy of AtHDG11 simultaneously enhancing drought tolerance and increasing *** with transgenic rice and other crops will be presented and discussed.

We study the relevance of nucleon pairs with higher spins, in addition to spin-zero and spin-two pairs (i.e., S D pairs), in low-lying states of even-even Xe nuclei. By including those higher-spin pairs in our configuration, we recalculate energy level schemes, elec trical quadrupole moments, magnetic moments and electric quadrupole transition rates, for low-lying states of even-even 128-142Xe nuclei. The agreement between our calculated results and the experimental data is substantially improved in comparison with previous studies.

Both rice pollen flow and gene flow model have been established based on the Gaussian Plume Model,the 3 locations×3 years field experimental data of transgene flow to common rice cultivars(Oryza sativa L.),male sterile(ms) lines and common wild rice(*** L.),and the 32 years historical meteorology data during the rice flowering period collected from 38 meteorological stations in southern China. A concept of gene flow coefficient(GFC) is proposed,that is the ratio of the transgene flow frequency(G%) obtained from field experiments against the aggregated pollen dispersal ratio(P) or frequency(P%) calculated based on the pollen flow model. The maximum distances of gene flow(MDGF) to traditional rice cultivars,ms lines,and common wild rice either at a threshold value of 1.0%or 0.1%are determined. The MDGF and its spatial distribution in southern China show that the gene flow pattern is significantly affected by the monsoon climate,the topography,and the outcrossing ability of recipients. We believe that the information provided in this study will be useful for the risk assessment of transgenic rice in other rice growing regions.

Six paddy soils of Shanghai, China, were studied after 120 days of anaerobicincubation at 25 deg C and 35 deg C. Four models, the effective accumulated temperature model, theone-component first-order exponential model (the one-pool model), the two-component first-orderexponential model (the two-pool model), and the two-component first-order plus zero-orderexponential model including a constant term (the special model), were fitted to the data of observedmineral-N during incubation using non-linear regression procedures. The two-pool model and thespecial model gave the best fits amongst the four models, and parameters in the special model weremore reasonable than those in the other three. Results showed that the special model gave a betterprediction of nitrogen mineralization under flooded conditions than the other three models.

An identification has been made of some shoshonitic intrusive rocks in central Hainan Island recently. These rocks are K-rich (K2O=2.9%―5.1%, K2O/Na2O=0.95―2.12), distinctly enriched in LILE and LREE, strongly depleted in Nb, Ta, and moder- ately depleted in Sr and Ti, with (87Sr/86Sr)i = 0.70859―0.71425 and ε Nd(t) = (?2.77―?7.49). They were derived from an EMⅡ-type mantle source. The enrichment process is related to metasomatism of depleted mantle caused by a great amount of fluid-melt released from oceanic crust and terri- genous sediments at great depth (eclogite facies) during the subduction of the South China plate under the Indochina-South China Sea plate in the Carbon- iferous–Early Permian. A SHRIMP U-Pb zircon dating yields a crystallization age of 272±7 Ma for the sho- shonitic intrusions, which is coeval with the strongly peraluminous granites found in central Hainan Island. These two kinds of rocks generally possess syn-intrusion ductile deformation structures. Thus they are considered to have been generated during the early stage (syn-thrust phase) of a post-collisional event. The primary magma of shoshonitic rocks was produced at a depth > 80 km by decompression- dehydration melting of previously enriched litho- spheric mantle wedge, phlogopite-bearing garnet peridotite, which was in turn caused by the break-off of a descendent slab and upwelling of a hot as- thenosphere. The rising of melts was accompaniedby crustal contamination and crystallization fractiona- tion (AFC). Combining with other related data, it is proposed that the southwards subduction and amal- gamation of the South China plate with the Indo- China-South China Sea plate took place at ca. 287- 278 Ma, which was a part of the convergence proc- ess of the Pangea supercontinent. The suture zone was probably located along the line of Song Ma-Beibu Gulf-north margin of the Yunkai Moun- tains-Wuyi Mountains.

To study the characteristics of the distribution of the preferential paths and the affecting factors in the Three Gorges area, four soil profiles were dug to observe the distribution of preferential paths in the Quxi watershed in the Yangtze River basin. The Morisita exponential test method was used to examine the distribution type of preferential paths. The physical properties and infiltration characteristics of the soil were also measured to evaluate their relationship to preferential paths. The results showed that in this area, preferential paths clustered and mainly distributed in the 80-100 cm soil layer, and along the interface between the weathered layer and semi-weathered layer. There were more non-capillary pores in the 83-110 cm layer than in the other layers. It can be derived that most non-capillary pores in this layer were preferential paths caused by geological processes and rotten plant roots. The percentage of coarse soil particles increased with the depth of the soil layer. In the deeper soil layer, the coarse soil particles helped the formation of preferential paths. The fastest steady infiltration rate was observed in the of 83-110cm layer, which is inferred to be due to the greater number of preferential paths.
