Atmospheric frontal gravity waves observed in satellite SAR images of the Bohai Sea and Huanghai Sea

In the satellite synthetic aperture radar（SAR） images of the Bohai Sea and Huanghai Sea,the authors observe sea surface imprints of wave-like patterns with an average wavelength of 3.8 *** SAR observations with sea surface wind fields and surface weather maps,the authors find that the occurrence of the wave-like phenomena is associated with the passing of atmospheric *** authors define the waves as atmospheric frontal gravity *** dynamical parameters of the wave packets are derived from statistics of 9 satellite SAR images obtained from 2002 to 2008.A two-dimensional linear physical wave model is used to analyze the generation mechanism of the *** atmospheric frontal wave induced wind variation across the frontal wave packet is compared with wind retrievals from the SAR *** CMOD-5（C-band scatterometer ocean geophysical model function） is used for SAR wind retrievals VV（transmitted vertical and received vertical） for ENVISAT and HH（transmitted horizontally and received horizontally） for RADARSAT-1.A reasonable agreement between the analytical solution and the SAR observation is *** new SAR frontal wave observation adds to the school of SAR observations of sea surface imprints of AGWs including island lee waves,coastal lee waves,and upstream Atmospheric Gravity Waves（AGW）.

This paper reports a study on the relationship between ionospheric total electron content(TEC) over East Asia and the tropospheric circulation around the Qmghai-Tibet *** TEC over East Asia are obtained from 25 observatories during *** applying a partial correlation method which can eliminate the influences of solar and geomagnetic activities,we find no significant correlation between TEC and the Asian zonal circulation index(Iz),but find a positive correlation between the day-to-day variability of TEC and *** suggest that the positive correlation is closely related with the topography of the Qinghai-Tibet *** dynamical effect on airflow of the plateau can generate vortexes,and the vortexes may continuously excite internal gravity waves(IGWs) which transmit up to the ionosphere and cause regional wave *** study gives evidence for the dynamical mechanism of ionosphere -troposphere coupling and shows the importance of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in the ionosphere-troposphere coupling over East Asia.

Recent studies show that the rapid increases in urbanization and human activities in the PRD region have important impacts on regional air quality. In addition to local anthropogenic emissions which are major driving forces for poor air quality in this region, biomass burning in Southeast Asia has also important contribution on aerosol and ozone concentrations in the PRD region. In this paper, this effect is analyzed by using satellite data, ground measurements and models. MODIS aerosol optical depth (AOD) distribution in March 2006 shows a clear enhancement in AOD between Southeast Asia and the PRD region. With detail wind analysis, two distinguished conditions are classified, i.e., Condition-1 (PRD is under influence of the biomass burning from Southeast Asia) and Condition-2 (PRD is not under influence of the biomass burning from Southeast Asia). The characterizations of aerosol, UV, and ozone in Guangzhou city (located in the PRD region) under these two conditions are analyzed. The analyses suggest that aerosols and CO concentrations are higher in Condition-1 than in Condition-2;while the UV intensity and O 3 concentrations are lower in Condition-1 than in Condition-2. This result indicates that in Condition-1, the enhanced aerosol concentrations from the Southeast Asia biomass burning produce reduction of UV intensity, and thus decrease the formation of ozone in Guangzhou.

[1]The longest total solar eclipse of this century occurred in East and South Asia on 22 July *** eclipse was accompanied with a medium magnetic storm,whose main phase onset occurred～27 min after the passage of the Moon’s umbral *** TEC data from 60 GPS stations,we construct differential TEC maps to investigate the ionosphere response to the solar eclipse in central china in the range of 26°N-36°N, 108°E-118°E(i.e.,the magnetic latitude 15°N-25°N).During the eclipse’s totality,a "shadow" in the ionosphere shown as TEC depletion area was formed～100 km south of the Moon’s umbral path with a maximum decrease of 5 *** TEC depletion area moved eastward,following the movement of the totality area with a time lag of～10 min. Enhancements of TEC due to the storm are observed after the main phase *** relative drop of TEC due to the solar eclipse is evidently larger at lower latitudes than that at higher ones and around noontime than that in the *** modeling work,we find that the latitudinal dependence of the TEC response may result from latitudinal variation of magnetic inclination,which influences the diffusion of ionization among different ***,the local time dependence of TEC response is closely related to the local time variation of background atmosphere density,which affects the electron loss efficiency in the ionosphere.

A NUMERICAL MODEL FOR HILLY-LAND GLOBAL RADIATION

Based on the simulations of the hilly-land topographic parameters,i.e.,average orientation and slope, and topographic screen angle,a theoretical model is detailed to greater extent for global radiation over hilly countries in terms of the experimental *** main aspects are examined:the model construction; numerical run with the model parameters;discussion of simulations obtained locally in the model run for the southern Dabie Mountains. Results show that the significant effect of the topography on global *** present model applies in principle to the numerical simulation of global radiation for any form of topography of various regions.

The limited area 5-level primitive equation model,as the first operational precipitation forecast model in china,has been run at beijing (national) meteorological center (BMC) for more than four *** opera- tional results show that this model gives continuous services,and the forecast skill is satisfied for the forecast of some weather situations,such as extratropical cyclone,front and the precipitation associated with them. The forecast guides are widely used at the local weather services now.

Global modeling of M(3000)F2 and hmF2 based on three alternative EOF(empirical orthogonal function) expansion methods is described *** used for the model construction is the monthly median hourly values of M(3000)F2 from the ionosonde/digisonde stations distributed around the world for the period of 1975-1985 and the hmF2 data of the same period converted from the measured M(3000)F2 based on the strong anti-correlation existing between *** data of a low(1965) and a high(1970) solar activity year are used to validate the three alternative models based on different EOF expansion *** between the modeled results and observed data for both the low(1965) and high(1970) solar activity years showed good agreement for both M(3000)F2 and hmF2 *** analysis on the differences between model values and observed data showed that all the three alternative models(Model A,B and C) based on the different EOF expansion methods have better agreement with the observed data than the models currently used in *** three alternative EOF based models have almost the same *** on the preference of the three alternative EOF based models is given.

[1]Recently a so-called "wave-4 structure" was discovered in the equatorial ionosphere,which describes plasma density enhancements within four longitude sectors separated about 90°from each *** structure was proposed to be controlled by the tide mode of DE3(diurnal eastward-propagating with zonal wave number-3) excited by different heating in the tropical troposphere due to land-sea ***,using F-layer peak density (NmF2) and the peak height(hmFl) extracted from the COSMIC data set,we investigate the wave-4 structure by decomposing it into interhemispheric symmetric and antisymmetric *** results indicate that the generally accepted mechanism of DE3 modulation of E region dynamo only accounts for the daytime symmetric components, while the antisymmetric components could be explained well in the terms of the SE2(semidiurnal eastward -propagating with zonal wave number-2) tide in transequatorial neutral ***,the antisymmetric component dominates the wave-4 structure in hmF2 during nighttime,suggesting the SE2 transequatorial wind is the leading contributor to the nighttime wave-4 structure in ***:He,M.,***,***,and ***(2011), Strong evidence for couplings between the ionospheric wave-4 structure and atmospheric tides,***,38,L14101,
