Heavy ion reactions around the Coulomb barrier

The angular distributions of fission fragments for the 32S+184W reaction near Coulomb barrier energies are measured. The ex perimental fission excitation function is obtained. The measured fission cross sections are decomposed into fusion-fission, quasi-fission and fast fission contributions by the dinuclear system (DNS) model. The hindrance to completing fusion both at small and large collision energies is explained. The fusion excitation functions of 32S+90,96Zr in an energy range from above to below the Coulomb barrier are measured and analyzed within a semi-classical model. The obvious effect of positive Q-value multi-neutron transfers on the sub-barrier fusion enhancement is observed in the 32S+96Zr system. In addition, the excitation functions of quasi-elastic scattering at a backward angle have been measured with high precision for the systems of 16O+208Pb, 196Pt, 184W, and 154,152Sm at energies well below the Coulomb barrier. Considering the deformed coupling effects, the extracted diffuseness parameters are close to the values extracted from the systematic analysis of elastic and inelastic scattering data. The elastic scattering angular distribution of 17F+12C at 60 MeV is measured and calculated by using the continuum-discretized coupled-channels (CDCC) approach. It is found that the diffuseness parameter of the real part of core-target potential has to be increased by 20% to reproduce the experimental result, which corresponds to an increment of potential depth at the surface re gion. The breakup cross section and the coupling between breakup and elastic scattering are small.

A systematic study of the phase formation, structure and magnetic properties of the R3Fe29-xTxcompounds (R=Y, Ce, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, and Dy; T=V and Cr) has been performed uponhydrogenation. The lattice constants and the unit cell volume of R3Fe29-xTxHy decrease withincreasing R atomic number from Nd to Dy, except for Ce, reflecting the lanthanide *** anisotropic expansions mainly along the a- and b-axis rather than along the c-axis areobserved for all of the compounds upon hydrogenation. Hydrogenation leads to an increase inthe Curie temperature and a corresponding increase in the saturation magnetization at roomtemperature for each compound. First order magnetization processes (FOMP) occur in theexternal magnetic fields for Nd3Fe24.5Cr4.5H5.0, Tb3Fe27.0Cr2.0H2.8, and Gd3Fe28.0Cr1.0H4.2compounds

The relationship between the canonical ENSO and the phase transition of the Antarctic oscillation at the quasi-quadrennial timescale

A correlation analysis is performed to investigate the relationship between El Nino-Southern Oscillation （ENSO） and the Antarctic oscillation （AAO） at the quasi-quadrennial （QQ） *** is found that the cold tongue index （CTI） and the AAO index （AAOI） are negatively correlated with about a 7-month lead-time,while they are positively correlated with about a 15-month *** further explore this relationship,complex empirical orthogonal function analysis is employed in the QQ sea level pressure （SLP） anomalies from 1951 to *** results indicate that,during the ENSO cycle,there exists one kind of global tropical wave of wavenumber 1 （GTW1） propagating *** the traveling of GTW1,the tropical SLP anomaly tends to intrude into the southern ***,three strong signals travel synchronously along the circumSouth-Pacific path,and a relatively weak signal extends eastward and poleward over the South Ocean in the Atlantic-Indian Ocean *** the propagation of these signals,the AAO phase tends to be reversed *** a result,there exists an evident lead-lag correlation between CTI and *** can be concluded that ENSO plays a key role in the phase transition of AAO at the QQ *** is also noticed that this regular relationship is only evident in the canonical ENSO events,for which sea surface temperature （SST） anomalies extend westward from the tropical eastern *** the other hand,the similar relationships are not found among those atypical ENSO events for which SST anomalies spread eastward from the central Pacific,such as the 1982-1983 ENSO event.

A nanostructured Hf11Ni89 ribbon sample was prepared by melt-spinning. It was found that the as-quenched sample is composed of a major HfNi5 compound nanophase and an interfacial magnetic Ni(Hf) solid solution phase. The structure evolution of the sample was studied by using X-ray difFraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), difFerential scanning calorimetry (DSC), resistivity and magnetothermal analysis. Upon heating, a second precipitation process of the Ni(Hf) phase prior to grain growth wa5 detected by means of both structural analysis and physical property measurements. The measurement results are discussed based on the relationship between microstructure and physical properties.

Contribution of cloud condensate to surface rainfall process

Contribution of cloud condensate to surface rainfall processes is investigated in a life span of tropical convection based on hourly data from a two-dimensional cloud resolving simulation. The model is forced by the large-scale vertical velocity, zonal wind and horizontal advections obtained from tropical ocean global atmosphere coupled ocean-atmosphere response experiment (TOGA COARE). The results show that during the genesis, development, and decay of tropical convection, calculations with water vapor overestimate surface rain rate, and cloud condensate plays an important role in correcting overestimation in surface rain rates. The analysis is carried out in deep convective clouds and anvil clouds during the development of tropical convection. The surface rain rates calculated with water vapor in deep convective clouds and anvil clouds have similar magnitudes, the large surface rain rate appears in deep convective clouds due to the consumption of water hydrometeors whereas the small surface rain rate occurs in anvil clouds because of the gain of ice hydrometeors. Further analysis of the grid data shows that the surface rain rates calculated with water vapor and with cloud condensate are negatively correlated with the correlation coefficient of - 0.85, and the surface rain rate calculated with cloud condensate is mainly contributed to the water hydrometeors in the tropical deep convective regime.

In situ interferometry was used to investigate the gelation process of polyacrylic acid (PAA) gels. The basic principle of the in situ interferometry technique is illustrated. It can give sufficient information for non-destructive and successful investigation of the whole gelation process. The effect of initiator concentration on the gelation process was studied. The polymerization rate of AA increases with increasing initiator concentration. The error arising from the thermal effect in the gelation process can be neglected.

Colossal magnetoresistive p-n junctions of perovskite oxide La_(0.9)Sr_(0.1)MnO_3/SrNb_(0.01)Ti_(0.99)O_3

We have successfully fabricated the colossal magnetoresistive (CMR) p-n junctions of perovskite oxide La0.9Sr0.1MnO3/SrNb0.01Ti0.99O3 (LSMO/SNTO) with laser molecular beam epitaxy. The I-V characteristics of the LSMO/SNTO p-n junctions as a function of applied magnetic field (05 T) were studied between 100 and 300 K. We found that the p-n junction exhibited the CMR behavior. The CMR ratio rR/R0 (rR = RH - R0) is positive in magnetic fields below 0.13 T and at high temperature, while it displays a negative CMR near 100 K and in magnetic fields over 0.13 T. The CMR ratio values are 8% at 0.1 T and 13% at 5 T and 300 K, 40% at 0.1 T and 150 K, 10% at 0.13 T and 60% at 5 T and 100 K. The CMR behavior of the p-n junction is different from those of the LaMnO3 compound family.

By the vector product of absolute vorticity vectors and equivalent potential temperature gradients, a new vector, convec-tive vorticity vector (CVV) is readdressed after Gao et al., and is applied to the study of the development and movement of mesoscale rainstorms in the Jiang-Huai valley of china by using high-resolution simulation data with PSU/NCAR MM5 briefly. The results show that the CVV, especially its vertical component which is closely related to interactions between vertical secondary circulations and horizontal equivalent potential temperature gradients, may be a good tracer and diagnostic tool in the study of mesoscale rainstorms in the Jiang-Huai valley of china. And the main physical processes responsible for the variations of the vertical component of the CVV are discussed briefly based on its tendency equation proposed in this article.

Temporal study of GRS 1915+105 with rms-flux relation:The importance of magnetic activities in the corona

The rms-flux relations for some observations of GRS 1915+105 are *** rms-flux relations of the light curves in only one state,state C or state A,can be described by the simple non-linear model provided Zhang;we thus interpret that such a linear relation reflects the relative importance of magnetic instability for X-ray emission in the corona of the system,compared to the thermal viscous instability for the X-ray emission in the accretion *** rms-flux relations for state B are very scattered,possibly because of the dominance of thermal viscous instability for the X-ray emission in the accretion *** complex rms-flux relations for the observations of transitions between two or three states are caused by the combination of the different rms-flux relations of these *** underlying physical processes are the combination of magnetic topology in the corona and thermal viscous instability in the accretion disk.
