Transforming growth factor-b 1 (TGF-β1), a multi-function polypeptide, is a double-edged sword in cancer. For some tumor cells, TGF-β1 is a potent growth inhibitor and apoptosis inducer. More commonly, TGF-β1 loses its growth-inhibitory and apoptosis-inducing effects, but stimulates the metastatic capacity of tumor cells. It is currently little known about TGF-β1-promoted cell migration in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells, let alone its mechanism. In this study, we found that TGF-β1 lost its tumor-suppressive effects, but significantly stimulated cell migration in SMMC-7721 human HCC cells. By FACS and Western blot analysis, we observed that TGF-β1 enhanced the expression of α5β1 integrin obviously, and subsequently stimulated cell adhesion onto fibronectin (Fn). Furthermore, we observed that TGF-β1 could also promote SMMC-7721 cells adhesion onto laminin (Ln). Our data also provided evidences that TGF-β1 induced epithelial-to-mesenchymal transformation (EMT) in SMMC-7721 cells. First, SMM

Oxidative stress has been identified as a possible element in the neuropathological processes of schizophrenia(SCZ).Alteration of oxidative stress markers has been reported in SCZ studies,but with inconsistent *** evaluate the risk of oxidative stress to schizophrenia,a meta-analysis was conducted,including five markers of oxidative stress [thiobarbituric reactive substances(TBARS),nitric oxide(NO),catalase(CAT),glutathione peroxidase(GP) and superoxide dismutase(SOD)] in SCZ patients versus healthy *** study showed that TBARS and NO significantly increased in SCZ,while SOD activity significantly decreased in the disorganized type of SCZ *** significant effect size was found for the activities of GP and CAT in SCZ patients(P>0.05).Egger’s regression test observed no significant publication bias across the oxidative stress markers,but found high heterogeneities in all the 5 *** subgroup analysis suggested that the ethnicity,sample size of patients and sample sources may contribute to the heterogeneity of the results for TBARS,NO and *** result further demonstrated the involvement of oxidative stress in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia.

Human gastric cancer MKN-45 cells were transfectedwith pULB 3238, a plasmid carrying MVMp NS-1 genewith its original P4 promoter replaced by the glucocorticoid inducible promoter MMTV-LTR. After the integration and expression of NS-1 gene, some of the transfectantsdied, while others remained alive, but the growth featuresof survived cells were changed. For further study on theantineoplastic function of parvoviral NS-1 protein in vivo,transgenic mice carrying NS-1 genes were established byconventional method. Among 4 founders, one of them wasfound to be able to transmit the transgene to around 50%of their offsprings. RT-PCR was performed to indicate theexpression of NS-1 gene in transgenic mice and its mRNAappeared in a variety of tissues. The expression of integrated NS-1 gene may correlate with the decreased incidence of tumor induced in vivo by chemical carcinogens.

AIM To analyze the association of HLA-DRBl with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) in patients from china.``METHODS In .32 patients and 45 healthy controls,polymerase chain reaction amplification with sequencespecific primers (PCR-SSP) was performed to examine the association of certain alleles or polymorphic sequences of HLA-DRB1 with AIH.``RESULTS HLA-DRB1 typing by PCFLSSP showed that DR4had a significantly increased frequency among patients with AIH versus healthy control (46.9% versus 20.8%;relative risk 3.35, P=0.014). In subtypes of DR4, there was a trend of increase in the gene frequency of DRB10405 in patients with AIH versus healthy controls (21.9%vs 6.3%, P=0.04, but Pc 0.08). In addition, asignificant increase was found in the alleles frequency encoding QRRAA from the third hyperpolymorphic region of DR4 in the patients with AIH (86.7% of DR4 positive patients vs 40.0% in DR4 positive controls, P 0.016, Pc =0.028. RR 9.75).``CONCLUSION AIH in Chinese is associated with HLADR4. There is a relationship between QRRAA sequence within the third hyperpolymorphic region of the DRB allele and AIH in Chinese.

AIM: The present study was designed to test a hypothesis that nonfatal ventricular arrhythmia such as ventricularpremature beats (VPB) is a contributing factor in the elevation of blood pressure variability (BPV). METHODS:Blood pressure (BP) and electrocardiogram were continuously recorded. The relation between VPB and BPV wasobserved under conscious state in chronic myocardial infarction (MI) rats one month after ligation of the leftcoronary artery, and further verified under anesthetized state in rat model of ventricular arrhythmia produced byacute intravenous infusion of aconitine. RESULTS: MI rats exhibited a big difference in the count and pattern ofVPB, and were divided into no VPB, occasional VPB, and frequent VPB groups. Among the three groups, therewere no differences in BP, heart period (HP), and MI size. However, BPV was markedly higher in frequent notoccasional VPB rats, and HP variability (HPV) was larger in both frequent and occasional VPB rats, when comparedwith no VPB rats. In the whole population of MI rats, BPV was positively correlated with VPB and HPV, not withBP, HP and MI size. Infusion of aconitine had no effect on BP, HP, BPV, and HPV during the period without *** VPB after several minutes of aconitine infusion induced significant increase in BPV and HPV with nochange in BP and HP. BPV was also positively correlated with VPB and HPV, not with BP and HP. Hemodynamicsin aconitine-evoked ventricular tachycardia was characterized as lower BP, higher BPV, and higher ***: High BPV can be caused by frequent not occasional VPB in rats.

A new six-frame algorithm based on Hariharan' s five-frame algorithmis derived. Although six-frame interferograms are needed, the new algorithm is immune to the effect of reference phase error or the second order detector nonlinearity ***, if they exist simultaneously, the new algorithm is insensitive to both of the errors. It is better than B. Zhao and Y. Surrel's six-frame algorithm to some extent.

As a specific guanine nucleotide exchange factor of Rac1, Tiam1 (T-lymphoma invasion and metastasis inducing protein 1) is involved in a number of cellular events, such as cytoskeleton reorganization, cell adhesion, and cell migration. Since Tiam1 was implicated in the invasion and metastasis of T-lymphoma cells and breast tumor cells, we compared the expression level of Tiam1 in two human giant-cell lung carcinoma cell strains with high or low metastasis potential, and found that Tiam1 expression level in high-metastatic 95D cells was higher than that in low-metastatic 95C cells. To further confirm the role of Tiam1 in invasion and metastasis, we constructed the antisense Tiam1 expression plasmid (pcDNA3-anti- Tiam1), which was transfected into 95D cells. A stable transfected clone with decreased Tiam1 expression was screened and selected for further research. Transwell assay showed that down-regulation of endogenous Tiam1 by anti-Tiam1 can reduce the in vitro invasiveness of 95D cells. Our results suggested that Tiam1 signaling contributed to the invasion and metastasis of the human giant-cell lung carcinoma cells.

A finite element method is introduced to solve the general elastic multi-structure problem, in which the displacements on bodies, the longitudinal displacements on plates and the longitudinal displacements on beams are discretized using conforming linear elements, the rotational angles on beams are discretized using conforming elements of second order, the transverse displacements on plates and beams are discretized by the Morley elements and the Hermite elements of third order, respectively. The generalized Korn's inequality is established on related nonconforming element spaces, which implies the unique solvability of the finite element method. Finally, the optimal error estimate in the energy norm is derived for the method.
