A Back Look on the Binary Phase Diagrams of Metals from the Mass Action Law and the Coexistence Theory of Metallic Melts

According to the mass action law and the coexistence theory of metallic melts, the mass action concentrations of Cu-Mg, Bi-Tl and Ni-Al melts involving compound formation have been calculated. The calculated results show that, except the ultimate case of pure element, when two elements are present in the melts, all structural units (atoms and molecules) without exception will be present in the melts, i.e., their concentrations may change from great to small, but they will not vanish into nothing, and only under such conditions, the calculated results both agree with practice and obey the law of mass action. In view of that over considerable wide composition range, the activities of both elements of the three solid binary alloys mentioned above have been measured, this seems in contradiction with the present relevant phase diagrams, in which the structural units are determined by composition range, so the latter needs further investigation and consideration.

Molecular combing is a powerful method for aligning a large array of DMA molecules onto a surface. It is a process whereby DNA molecules are stretched and aligned on a glass surface by the force via fluid flow. The ability to comb up to several hundred DNAs on a single cover slip allows for a statistically significant number of measurements to be made. These features make molecular combing an attractive tool for genomic studies, such as DNA replication, DNA transcription, DNA-protein interaction and so on. In this review article, we discuss the molecular combing principle, method and its applications.

This paper reviews the essence of the Walsh and Bridge functions from the point of view of the recursive relationship; it also unifies their expressions. A new kind of function-the hybrid Bridge function-is constructed from the definition of the hybrid matrix, in which the row vectors are taken from the Walsh and Bridge function matrices. We also propose a new approach for generating function sequences; one that uses the column vectors of the hybrid Bridge function matrix as the new function sequences. These sequences are able to adjust the number of zeroes flexibly; thus, resolving the constraint on the application of excessive zeroes in Bridge function sequences, while at the same time maximizing the research field for function sequences. Through strict mathematical analysis, it is proved that when the initial matrix order of the parent matrices and the similarity of the hybrid matrices meet certain conditions, the hybrid function sequences exhibit good orthogonal characteristics. This provides a theoretical basis for its further applications in communication systems.

To acquire a competitive advantage in the expanding market, manufacturing enterprises should be able to manage their supply chains as effectively as possible. It is now becoming popular to model supply chains as multi-agent systems and use discrete event simulation to learn more about their behaviors or investigate the implications of alternative configurations. In order to enhance the computational efficiency and keep the simulation credibility, this paper proposes a message-driving formalism for the simulation of multi-agent supply chain systems. Through the message-driving formalism, the problem of shared variables is addressed and the parallel operation of agents is implemented. Simulation experiments with a prototype implementation show that the message-driving formalism is able to provide credible results in significantly less simulation time.

The prediction and control criterion of both the wrinkle limit and fracture limit on the cylindrical cup deep-drawing are given, and the prediction and control diagram of both the wrinkle limit and fracture limit are also given. The results show that it is suitable for no-flange cylindrical cup deep-drawing, narrow-flange cylindrical cup deep-drawing, wide-flange cylindrical cup deep-drawing/expanding compound forming and rigid punch expanding forming.

Cenozoic basalt in eastern china contains abundant ultramafic xenoliths which are specimens of pyrolitesreleased during basaltic magma eruption. A total of 405 P-T data of pyroxene in the ultramafic rocks have beencollected, which present a more precise pyroxene geotherm. The average geothermal gradient in the upper man-tle represented by the pyroxene geotherm is about 3.3℃ / km, which is much less than that derived from theconductive thermal model (≈14℃ / km), implying the great significance of convective heat transfer. The calcu-lation shows that the contributions of convective and conductive heat transfers are 79% and 21%, *** perturbation in the thermal structure of the upper mantle is an important manifestation of thetectonothermal event of Cenozoic continental rifting and intense basaltic volcanism in eastern china. Based onthe pyroxene geotherm and its comparison with the current geothermal field derived from the measurements ofthe surface heat flows, it is suggested that the Moho may be a secondary thermal boundary. The currentgeothermal field and the thermal structure of the lithosphere in eastern china may mainly reflect the result ofthe tectonothermal disturbance in the Neogene-Quaternary, in other words, the lithosphere has just begun toCool.

Based on the theory of hydrogen enhanced localized plasticity of the hydrogen induced cracking and the consideration of the effect of the residual stress produced by eliminated stress heat-treatment, a fractal model of hydrogen induced cracking was presented, and the relationships among the effective surface energy (H), fractal dimension D and stress intensity factor of hydrogen induced cracking, KIH, for welding pipeline under hydrogen environment was set up, from which the relationship of D and KISCC was obtained. The model has been verified experimentally to be correct.

By means of the comparisons with the formulas in statistical mechanics and thermodynamics, in this paper it is demonstrated that for the single conservation law partial derivative(t)u + partial derivative(x)f(u) = 0, if the flux function f(u) is convex (or concave), then, the physical entropy is S = -f(u); Furthermore, if we assume this result can be generalized to any f(u) with two order continuous derivative, from the thermodynamical principle that the local entropy production must be non-negative, one entropy inequality is derived, by which the O.A. Olejnik's famous E- condition can be explained successfully in physics.

Cathodoluminescence (CL) image analysis of zircon is a key step of mineral micro-area compositional investigation and U-(Th)-Pb dating. We introduce a system consisting of field emission ESEM and high performance cathodoluminescence. This system has obvious advantages in imaging resolution and CL spectrum. We acquired some zircon CL images and spectra to demonstrate the ability of this system. Our results show that this system has a great potential application to characterize and identify the genesis of zircon.
