LIGHT [homologous to lymphotoxins, shows inducible expression, and competes with herpes simplex virus glycoprotein D for herpes virus entry mediator (HVEM/TR2)] is a new member of TNF superfamily. The HT-29 colon cancer cell line is the most sensitive to LIGHT-induced, IFNγ-mediated apoptosis among the cell lines we have examined so far. Besides downregulation of Bcl-XL, upregulation of Bak, and activation of both PARP [poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase] and DFF45 (DNA fragmentation factor), LIGHT-induced, IFNγ-mediated apoptosis of HT-29 cells involves extensive caspase activation. Caspase-8 and caspase-9 activation, as shown by their cleavages appeared as early as 24 h after treatment, whereas caspase-3 and caspase-7 activation, as shown by their cleavages occurred after 72 h of LIGHT treatment. Caspase-3 inhibitor Z-DEVD-FMK (benzyloxycarbonyl-Asp-Glu-Val-Asp-fluoromethylketone) and a broad range caspase inhibitor Z-VAD-FMK (benzyloxycarbonyl-Val-Ala-Asp fluoromethylketone) were able to block LIGHT-ind

The Meishucun secton has been recommended as an international candidate stratotype secton of thePrecambrian-Cambrian boundary. The paper deals with the palaeomagnetic study on the section. A total of159 palaeomagnetic samples were successively collected from the platform-facies sequence of carbonates andphosphates at the section. Thermal demagnetization results indicate a great majority of the rocks at the sectionhave been strongly overprinted by recent magnetic field, but 57 samples have preserved remanentmagnetization with antipodal directions (mean D/I=4.2°/ 7.1°, K=9, α_(95) = 6.6°). Baaed on calculation,the location of the palaeomagnetic pole was at 68.8°N and 270.7°E, which is different from any palaeopolesobtained from younger Phanerozoic rocks in South China. The results reveal a polarity zonation which in-cludes at least 9 reversal events. A comparison of China's magnetostratigraphic records with those fromSiberia, Australia and the western U.S.A. shows that all the sections are characterized by frequent polarity re-versals.

Motivated by the idea of tunneling beyond semi-classical approximation of Majhi et al., we discuss entropy correction of Dirac particles tunneling from the Reissner-Nordstrm black hole with a global monopole. To get the corrections correctly, we regard the proportionality constants of quantum correction terms to the semi-classical term of action as the inverse of the square of the Planck Length but not that of the Planck Mass. Our study shows that corrections to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy, namely the logarithmic term and the inverse area term, may be reproduced as the quantum effect is considered.

This paper introduces dynamic paravirtualization, which imitates paravirtualization and aims at reducing VM exits of full virtualization with hardware support. In dynamic paravirtualization, VMM (virtual machine monitor) dynamically monitors and replaces the hot instructions, which cause most VM exits. It is transparent to the guest OS such that the legacy OSes can benefit from this optimization. Our study focuses on reducing the overhead of memory virtualization-dynamic memory paravirtualization (DMP). We implant a new memory management mechanism in VMM such that all user-mode page faults can be handled by the guest OS directly without VM exits. We implement a prototype of dynamic memory paravirtulization based on a version of KVM using Intel VT. Our experimental results show that our technique essentially eliminates the overhead of VM exits caused by page faults. Dynamic memory paravirtualization can achieve the effectiveness of paravirtualization without changing the source code of guest OS.

In this review article, the microdialysis for tissue engineering monitoring is discussed. Among various monitoring techniques, micro- dialysis is advantageous for its capacity of perfusion on-line, and o -line multiple parameter monitoring. Following a description on the general system and performance, the main challenges to apply this technique for reliable long term monitoring are outlined. Further opportunities are identi ed.

Computers have changed nearly every aspect of life in this world. Invented roughly fifty years ago, they now form the infrastructure on which government, business, and global communications rest. As our reliance on computers increases, so does the number and complexity of the applications and the number and quality of trained professionals that will be needed to support further progress. The United States already faces personnel shortages in some computer related jobs, including university teaching. In the face of this evident and increasing need, we must think clearly about out expectations for computing professionals of all sorts and the way they are trained. In the forty years that I have been in the field, the focus in industry has changed from programming to software development. A gulf is growing between the skills that students build at a university and the needs of industry. This paper examines the nature and extent of the problem and suggests a variety of ways to address it
