The role the quantum entanglement plays in quantum computation speedup has been widely disputed. Some believe that quantum computation's speedup over classical computation is impossible if entan-glement is absent,while others claim that the presence of entanglement is not a necessary condition for some quantum algorithms. This paper discusses this problem systematically. Simulating quantum computation with classical resources is analyzed and entanglement in known algorithms is reviewed. It is concluded that the presence of entanglement is a necessary but not sufficient condition in the pure state or pseudo-pure state quantum computation speedup. The case with the mixed state remains open. Further work on quantum computation will benefit from the presented results.

In this paper, we analyze the convergence of the adaptive conforming P 1 element method with the red-green refinement. Since the mesh after refining is not nested into the one before, the Galerkin-orthogonality does not hold for this case. To overcome such a difficulty, we prove some quasi-orthogonality instead under some mild condition on the initial mesh (Condition A). Consequently, we show convergence of the adaptive method by establishing the reduction of some total error. To weaken the condition on the initial mesh, we propose a modified red-green refinement and prove the convergence of the associated adaptive method under a much weaker condition on the initial mesh (Condition B).

We shall prove the equivalences of a non-degenerate circle-preserving map and a M(o)bius transformation in ^Rn, of a non-degenerate geodesic-preserving map and an isometry in Hn of a non-degenerate line-preserving map and an affine transformation in Rn. That a map is non-degenerate means that the image of the whole space under the map is not a circle, or geodesic or line respectively. These results hold without either injective or surjective, or even continuous assumptions, which are new and of a fundamental nature in geometry.

Let G be a finite abelian group and its Sylow p-subgroup a direct product of copies of a cyclic group of order p r , i.e., a finite homocyclic abelian group. Let Δ n (G) denote the n-th power of the augmentation ideal Δ(G) of the integral group ring ?G. The paper gives an explicit structure of the consecutive quotient group Q n (G) = Δ n (G)/Δ n+1(G) for any natural number n and as a consequence settles a problem of Karpilovsky for this particular class of finite abelian groups.

Cosmic hydrogen is reionized and maintained in its highly ionized state by the ultraviolet emission attributed to an early generation of stars and quasars. The Lyα opacity observed in absorption spectra of high-redshift quasars permits more stringent constraints on the ionization state of cosmic hydrogen. Based on density perturbation and structure formation theory, we develop an analytic model to trace the evolution of the ionization state in the post-overlap epoch of reionization, in which the bias factor is taken into account. For quasars, we represent an improved luminosity function by utilizing a hybrid approach for the halo formation rate that is in reasonable agreement with the published measurements at 2 ≤ z ≤ 6. Comparison with the classic Press-Schechter mass function of dark matter halos, we demonstrate that the biased mass distribution indeed enhances star formation efficiency in the overdense environment by more than 25 per cent following the overlap of ionized bubbles. In addition, an alternative way is introduced to derive robust estimates of the mean free path for ionizing photons. In our model, star-forming galaxies are likely to dominate the ionizing background radiation beyond z = 3, and quasars contribute equally above a redshift of z ～ 2.5. From 5 ≤ z ≤ 6, the lack of evolution in photoionization rate can thus be explained by the relatively flat evolution in star formation efficiency, although the mean free path of ionizing photons increases rapidly. Moreover, in the redshift interval z ～ 2 - 6, the expected mean free path and Gunn-Peterson optical depth obviously evolve by a factor of ～ 500 and ～50 respectively. We find that the relative values of critical overdensities for hydrogen ionization and collapse could be 430% at z ≈2 and 2% at z ≈6, suggesting a rapid overlap process in the overdense regions around instant quasars following reionization. Since the concept of zero-knowledge protocols was introduced, it has attracted a lot of attention and in turn showed significant effect on the development of cryptography, complexity theory and other areas. The round complexity of a zero-knowledge protocol is a very important efficiency consideration, and it is required to be as small as possible. Generally, it is desirable to have zero-knowledge protocols with constant numbers of rounds. Goldreich and Oren proved that only languages in BPP have one-round and two-round zero-knowledge protocols. Moreover, they also showed that only languages in BPP have one-round honest-verifier zero-knowledge protocols. The notion of honest-verifier zero-knowledge protocols is highly non-trivial and fascinating itself, and has many other uses. Thus, the problem as to whether there exist two-round honest-verifier zero-knowledge protocols becomes an important open problem. In this paper, we introduce a new simulation technique and present a two-round honest-verifier zero-knowledge protocol for any language in N P under a standard complexity assumption based on this technique.

Ustaoglu presents a secure and efficient key exchange protocol named CMQV,based on the design rationales of HMQV and *** with the latter two protocols,on one hand,CMQV achieves high performance of HMQV,and on the other,it is proven secure in eCK model as NAXOS ***,CMQV enjoys the security proof under gap Diffie-Hellman assumption as indicated by its *** this paper,we propose a variant of CMQV,called CMQV+,which is proven secure under a weaker assumption (*** Diffie-Hellman assumption) in eCK model with random oracles while maintaining the high-performance feature of CMQV as much as possible.

An improved method for evaluating the seasonal variability of total suspended sediment flux field in the Yellow and East china Seas

The suspended sediment flux field in the Yellow and East china Seas(YECS) displays its seasonal variability.A new method is introduced in this paper to obtain the flux field via retrieval of ocean color remote sensing data,statistical analysis of historical suspended sediment concentration data,and numerical simulation of three-dimensional(3D) flow *** components of the sediment flux field include(i) surface suspended sediment concentration inverted from ocean color remote sensing data;(ii) vertical distribution of suspended sediment concentration obtained by statistical analysis of historical observation data;and(iii) 3D flow field modeled by a numerical *** the improved method,the 3D suspended sediment flux field in the YECS has been *** comparison with the suspended sediment flux field solely based on the numerical simulation of a suspended sediment transport model,the suspended sediment flux field obtained by the improved method is found to be more *** 3D suspended sediment flux field from ocean colour remote sensing and in situ observation are more closer to the ***,by quantitatively analyzing the newly obtained suspended sediment flux field,the quantity of sediment erosion and deposition within the different regions can be *** sediment exchange between the Yellow Sea and the East china Sea can be *** mechanism of suspended sediment transport in the YECS can be better *** particular,it is suggested that the long-term transport of suspended sediment is controlled mainly by the circulation pattern,especially the current in winter.
