Emergency membrane contactor based absorption system for ammonia leaks in water treatment plants

Because of the suspected health risks of trihalomethanes (THMs), more and more water treatment plants have replaced traditional chlorine disinfection process with chloramines but often without the proper absorption system installed in the case of ammonia leaks in the storage room. A pilot plant membrane absorption system was developed and installed in a water treatment plant for this purpose. Experimentally determined contact angle, surface tension, and corrosion tests indicated that the sulfuric acid was the proper choice as the absorbent for leaking ammonia using polypropylene hollow fiber membrane contactor. Effects of several operating conditions on the mass transfer coeffcient, ammonia absorption, and removal effciency were examined, including the liquid concentration, liquid velocity, and feed gas concentration. Under the operation conditions investigated, the gas absorption effciency over 99.9% was achieved. This indicated that the designed pilot plant membrane absorption system was effective to absorb the leaking ammonia in the model storage room. The removal rate of the ammonia in the model storage room was also experimentally and theoretically found to be primarily determined by the ammonia suction flow rate from the ammonia storage room to the membrane contactor. The ammonia removal rate of 99.9% was expected to be achieved within 1.3.h at the ammonia gas flow rate of 500 m3.h. The success of the pilot plant membrane absorption system developed in this study illustrated the potential of this technology for ammonia leaks in water treatment plant, also paved the way towards a larger scale application.

The global asymptotic stability of cellular neural networks with delays is investigated. Three kinds of time delays have been considered. New delay-dependent stability criteria are proposed and are formulated as the feasibility of some linear matrix inequalities, which can be checked easily by resorting to the recently developed interior-point algorithms. Based on the Finsler Lemma, it is theoretically proved that the proposed stability criteria are less conservative than some existing results.

Study of a Novel Rotary Cyclone Gas-Solid Separator

Based on the analytical study of the characteristics of fine particle motion in swirling flow, a new design idea on flow organization and construction aimed at increasing the positive radial flow in the separation chamber of the rotary cyclone separator (PRV type) was proposed. Experimental verification including the test of variation of separation efficiency and pressure loss with the first and secondary flow ratio show that this new type separator has higher and more stable separation efficiency in broad flow ratio range while the pressure loss is far below the conventional rotary cyclone separator and even comparable with that of simple cyclone separator.

Impacts of permafrost changes on alpine ecosystem in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Alpine cold ecosystem with permafrost environment is quite sensitive to climatic changes and the changes in permafrost can significantly affect the alpine ecosystem. The vegetation coverage, grassland biomass and soil nutrient and texture are selected to indicate the regime of alpine cold ecosystems in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The interactions between alpine ecosystem and permafrost were investigated with the depth of active layer, permafrost thickness and mean annual ground temperature (MAGTs). Based on the statistics model of GPTR for MAGTs and annual air temperatures, an analysis method was developed to analyze the impacts of permafrost changes on the alpine ecosystems. Under the climate change and human engineering activities, the permafrost change and its impacts on alpine ecosystems in the permafrost region between the Kunlun Mountains and the Tanggula Range of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau are studied in this paper. The results showed that the per- mafrost changes have a different influence on different alpine ecosystems. With the increase in the thickness of active layer, the vegetation cover and biomass of the alpine cold meadow exhibit a significant conic reduction, the soil organic matter content of the alpine cold meadow ecosystem shows an exponential decrease, and the surface soil materials become coarse and gravelly. The alpine cold steppe ecosystem, however, seems to have a relatively weak relation to the permafrost environment. Those relationships resulted in the fact that the distribution area of alpine cold meadow decreased by 7.98% and alpine cold swamp decreased by 28.11% under the permafrost environment degradation during recent 15 years. In the future 50 years the alpine cold meadow ecosystems in different geomorphologic units may have different responses to the changes of the permafrost under different climate warming conditions, among them the alpine cold meadow and swamp ecosystem located in the low mountain and plateau area will have a relatively

Excavation and characterization of refuse in closed landfill

Refuse in landfills becomes stabilized as organic matter in refuse degrades and soluble inorganic substances dissolve during their long term stabilization process. In this paper, this process is also referred to as mineralization process and the resultant stabilized refuse referred to as aged refuse. Aged refuse contains a wide spectrum and huge quantity of microorganisms with strong decomposition capability for refractory organic matter present in some wastewater such as leachate. In this study, aged refuse excavated from 2 to 10 years old closed landfill compartments in shanghai Refuse Landfill is characterized in terms of particulate distribution by screening, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, biodegradable matter. The approaches for redevelopment of both land and aged refuse in the stabilized landfills are proposed.

The surface temperature of casting slab is an important parameter in the metallurgy field. Because the surface emissivity is uncertain and also unknown, it is difficult to measure the slab surface temperature accurately. A method based on preceded reflector and multi-wavelength was put forward to deal with the difficulty in surface temperature measurement of casting slab. On the premise of preceded reflector and non-preceded reflector, the method establishes the radiation energy equations and works out the emissivity and temperature in the equations. Also, the multilayer modeling of casting slab surface and multiple reflection-absorption process modeling were built by Monte Carlo method. The temperature measuring method had been applied in the continuous casting field. In order to verify the measured result, the thermal imaging method was adopted when the slab surface emissivity was set by repeated tests. Finally, the measured and verified temperature curves keep a same tendency and the error of the values is lower than 5℃. The comparison result shows that the method can measure temperature accurately.

Preparation and Magnetic Properties of Mn-Zn Ferrites by the Co-precipitation Method

Mn-Zn ferrites （Mn1-xZnxFe2O4） with different compositions were prepared by the coprecipitation method, and the influences of such synthesis conditions as pH value, composition and volume ratio （R） of the mixed solution and NH4HCO3.solution on their microstructures and magnetic properties were discussed. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction （XRD） and magnetization measurement instrument. Lattice parameters and average crystalline size of the synthesized materials were calculated from the corresponding XRD patterns with the related software Jade.5. For samples of different pH values, only one phase was found when pH values were 7.0, 8.0 and 9.0. The sample with pH value of 7.0 exhibited the highest saturation magnetic induction, the lowest coercive force, and crystallized best. For samples of different R values with pH value of 7.0, only one phase was observed in all samples, and the sample with R value of 2.3.exhibited the highest saturation magnetic induction and the lowest coercive force. The composition has mainly afected the magnetic properties, and the saturation magnetic induction increases with the increase of the content of Zn （x）, but decreases when x is beyond 0.6. The trend of coercive force is on the contrary. However, no magnetism is exhibited when the x value is up to 0.8.

Influence of Mo on the microstructure and mechanical properties of TiC-based cermets

The microstructures and mechanics properties of TiC-based cermets composed of TiC, WC, Ni, Co, Mo, and Cr3.2 were investigated. The results show that Mo has a great effect on the sintering densification, microstructures, and mechanical properties. The microstructures and distribution of Mo and Ti in the TiC-based cermets were analyzed. It was indicated that a new phase with Ti, Mo, W, and C was formed on the rim of （Ti,W）C grains by means of an addition of Mo into the TiC-based cermets. The new phase with a surrounding structure was of great aid to improve the wettability of the liquid phase on the solid phase surface of TiC, decrease the porosity and refine the grains of the hard phase, which gave rise to the increase in strength and hardness. The properties of the TiC-based cermets could be further improved to some extent by adding WC, Cr2C3. and Co.

A Resistivity Gradient Piezoelectric FGM Actuator

A resistivity gradient actuator based on lead zirconate titanate ceramics was successfully developed and the bending deflections up to 140 μm were obtained. The actuator material was a matrix of PZT ceramic into which smooth gradient of piezoelectric activity was introduced. The application of an electric field then causes the actuator to bend due to differential strains induced by the piezoelectric effect. The resistivity gradient of the actuator was achieved by doping PZT with suitable donor and acceptor dopants. PZT powder was modified and synthesized by using two stage powder fabrication method. The actuator was fabricated by uniaxial pressing followedby isostatic pressing with two layers of different resistivities.
