Quaternary marine transgressions in eastern China

Based on the data from 117 holes (9151 samples) and the research on ecology and palaeoecology of Foraminifera combined with that on Ostracoda, diatoms, pollen and spores, eight marine transgressions have been recognized in the great plain regions through the Quaternary sequences and two marine transgressions have been found since the Late Pleistocene in the coastal plain (bedrock coast) areas. In the North China Plain, these are in ascending order:the Bohai transgression in the Early Pleistocene, the Haixing and Huanghua transgressions in the Middle Pleistocene, the Baiyangdian and Cangzhou transgressions in the Late Pleistocene, and the Tianjin transgression in the Holocene. In the Yangtze River Delta region the Rugao and Zhoupu transgressions occurred in the Early Pleistocene, the Shanghai, Jiading, and Wangdian transgressions in the Middle Pleistocene, the Jiangyin and Ge Hu transgressions in the Late Pleistocene, and the Zhenjiang transgression in the Holocene. In the coastal plain (bedrock coast) areas of North China, the Cangzhou transgression was recorded in the Late Pleistocene and the Tianjin transgression in the Holocene, whereas in South China the Fuzhou transgression took place in the Late Pleistocene and the Changle transgression in the Holocene. The transgressions correspond to warm periods and regressions to cold periods. The younger transgressions were not only of shorter duration, but also of larger magnitude. These findings point to the existence of four flood event strata since the Middle Pleistocene: two in the late Middle Pleistocene and another two in the Late Pleistocene.

Two sedimentary sections were measured at Tai Co(Co means lake in Tibetan) in western Tibet,*** two sections are almost all composed of clay carbonate beds except in their lower parts where there are carbonized plants at>10 cm depths and dark-colored carbonate clay and clay at 50-70 cm depths,yielding abundant gastropods,ostracods,and *** carbon and oxygen stable isotope values of carbonate,ostracods,and charophytes and ecological features of microfossil communities indicate the following climatic change in the area from 41.4 to 4.5 ka BP:at 41.4-2..2.ka BP,the climate was relatively wet;at 2..2.2..5 ka BP,it was slightly warm-dry;at 2..5-2..5 ka BP,it was warm-wet;at 2..5-2..0 ka BP,it was slightly cold-wet;at 2..5-17.5 ka BP,it became cold abruptly and slightly wet,implying the climate of the last glacial maximum;at 17.5-16.0 ka BP,it was slightly cold-dry;at 16.0-11.8 ka BP,it was slightly warm-wet;at 11.8-10.4 ka BP,it was relatively cold-dry, roughly equivalent to the climate of the Younger Dryas,and at 10.4 ka BP,the temperatures began to rise again;at 10.4-9.4 ka BP,it was slightly warm-wet;at 9.4-8.5 ka BP,there occurred short warm-wet oscillations;at 8.5-7.9 ka BP,it was slightly dry-cold,representing a strong temperature-lowering and drying event in the postglacial stage;at 7.8-6.3.ka BP,it was slightly warm-wet;at 6.3.4.5 ka BP,the climate tended to be cold-dry.4.5 ka BP recorded the maximum aridity since the late part of the late Pleistocene.

A class of multivariate filter banks with a matrix factorization has been developed by Chen et al. The main purpose of this paper is to discuss some further properties of this kind of filter bank, such as the completeness, accuracy of the corresponding scaling functions and the relationships with Daubechies' wavelets and the multi-wavelets provided by Chui and Lian. Moreover, some examples are given to show that this kind of filter bank has a higher accuracy for the scaling functions.

The possible contribution of a mantle-derived fluid to the Ningwu porphyry iron deposits—Evidence from carbon and strontium isotopes of apatites

Apatite is a characteristic mineral for the iron deposits in the Ningwu region. Apatite shows a range of d13.PDB values from à9.6& to à0.6&,and most of them with the d13.PDB values distributed in a range of mantle carbon (i.e.,à2. to à9&),except for samples T-06-1 and J-06-3. Apatites in the Ningwu porphyry iron deposits yield a narrow variation range of 87Sr/86Sr values from 0.7063.6 to 0.707577,similar to those of the volcanic and subvolcanic rocks and higher than that of a typical mantle-derived magmatic apatite (i.e.,about 0.7040),indicating that formation of the apatites was involved with crust material contamination. d13.PDB and 87Sr/86Sr values of the apatite indicate a possible contribution of mantle-derived fluid and material to formation of the Ningwu porphyry iron deposits,supported by regional geology,regional gravities and geochemistry of the volcanic and subvolcanic rocks in the Ningwu region.

Forcing mechanism of the Pleistocene east Asian monsoon variations in a phase perspective

The deep sea records from the ODP Sites 1143.and 1144 in the northern and southern South China Sea (SCS), including foraminiferal δ 18O and δ 13., Opal% and pollen percentage, reveal that the variations of the east Asian monsoon have been closely correlated with the variations of the Earth’s orbital parameters (eccentricity, obliquity and precession) and the global ice volume on orbital scale. All the monsoonal proxies show strong 100 ka, 41 ka and 2.0}ka cycles. Although G. ruber δ 13. of Site 1143.is coherent with the ETP (ETP= normalized (eccentricity + obliquity-precession) at eccentricity, obliquity and precession bands, most of the coherent relationship focuses on the precession band, and the other monsoonal proxies are coherent with the ETP only at the precession band, which indicate that precession dominates the Pleistocene tropical climate changes. The phase relationship of the monsoonal proxies with the foraminiferal δ 18O implies that the global ice volume changes have played a significant role in modulating the east Asian monsoon climate, at least dominating the winter monsoon. This forcing mechanism of the east Asian monsoon is apparently different from that of the Indian ocean mon-soon. The variations of the east Asian monsoon at the precession band, at least that of the winter monsoon, have been controlled not only by the sensible heating but also by the latent heating of the surface water in the South China Sea.

Holocene grassland vegetation, climate and human impact in central eastern Inner Mongolia

Phytolith and pollen preserved in the Taipusi Banner paleosol profile, central eastern Inner Mongolia, provide evidence of Holocene grassland vegetation, climate and human impact. The combined phytolith and pollen records reveal a major change in vegetation composition about 5000 a BP. Before 5000 a BP, the vegetation was dominated by Aneurolepidium chinese-Stipa grandis grassland of C4 grasses. After 5000 a BP, C4 grasses rapidly retreated, indicating a shift to colder and more arid conditions. The gradual invasion of Stipa krylovii, Ag-ropyron desertorum, Ephedra, Chenopodiaceae and Caragana reveal the onset of grassland degeneration. Between 10000 and 872. a BP, the Aneurolepidium chinese-Stipa grandis grassland included a small proportion of Artemisia shrub and Echionopos type plants, implying a strong winter monsoon and very weak summer monsoon. From 872. to 7000 a BP, C4 grasses were common, indicating a strengthening of the summer monsoon. Between 7000 and 5000 a BP, the Holocene thermal maximum was evident, with a significant expansion of C4 grasses and the presence of some trees (such as Pinus and Betula, and so on) in or near the study site. From 42.0?000 a BP, a sandy grassland of Artemisia and Agropyron desertorum together with Aster-type taxa occurred. Precipitation amelioration took place between {2.00 and 2.70 a BP, with a rapid development of Echinops type plants and a small expansion of C4 grasses. From 2.70 a BP to present, human activities accelerated the process of grassland degeneration.

High Throughput SNP Genotyping with Two Mini-sequencing Assays

Two mini-sequencing methods, FP-TDI (template-directed dye-terminator incorporation with fluorescence-polarization) and MassArray (matrix assisted laser desorption ionization time of flight detection mass spectrometry), were optimized. A numeric standard was introduced to evaluate the SNP scoring quality of FP-TDI assay, thus made the optimization work easier. At the same time, using multi-PCR technology, 8-plex genotyping of MassArray assay was successfully carried out, some softwares were developed and the data process of MassArray was highly automated. Then these two methods were applied to high throughput SNP genotyping, the accuracy, efficiency and robustness were compared. The result shows FP-TDI is more sensitive to the concentration of SNPprimer and PCR product, as well as extension cycles, the SNPprimer length of FP-TDI should be 2.–3. bp long, whereas MassArray assay prefers to be as short as only 16 *** 6440 SNP sites of human chromosome 3.were genotyped in a sample of 90 individuals, 4792.sites by FP-TDI assay and 1648 sites by MassArray assay, the success rates of FP-TDI and MassArray were 67.7% and 93.6% respectively. The throughput of MassArray was higher than FP-TDI, and the cost of MassArray was lower, MassArray was more suitable for high throughput SNP genotyping.

Experimental and discrete element numerical analysis of side slope instability induced by fissure water underlying impervious bed

When the sliding mass contains impervious bed, rainfall can infiltrate into mountain via crevices and form higher artesian aquifer at impervious bed inferior. This will decrease slip resistance and increase sliding forces of the sliding mass, thus lowering the safety factor, and inducing landslide disasters. In this paper, a landslide experimental apparatus is designed for experimental studies on the mechanism of this type of landslides. Meanwhile, the non-dimensional parameters in the model experiment are taken into account using dimensional analysis. The experimental results show that (1) the ratio of the cleft water pressure to the overlying pressure is a crucial parameter affecting the stability of the slope; (2. when the shut-in pressure reaches 80% of the normal component of the pressure on the slip surface made up of rock and soil, landslide will occur; (3. the whole slope will start to slide when the shut-in pressure is equal to the normal component of the pressure formed by the overlying rock and soil on the upper 3.% area. In this article, a discrete element method simulation is used to investigate the influence of cleft water pressure and shearing strength on the landslide stability. It can be concluded that the critical value of Ccr, ?cr, which determines the slide mass stability, increases with the increase of the water pressure; if the water pressure reaches a high level, the stability of the slide mass depends mainly on C, while the influence of ? becomes smaller than C.
