Aim:Polypeptide from Chlamys farreri (PCF,molecular mass is 879) is a newmarine polypeptide compound isolated from Chlamys *** study investi-gates the possible protective roles and the mechanism of PCF against ultravioletB (UVB)-induced apoptosis in murine ***:The rate of apoptosisand caspase-3.activation was measured by flow *** expression ofstress-response genes c-fos and c-jun was observed by *** blotanalysis was performed to determine the release of cytochrome ***:It wasfound that UVB induced murine thymocyte *** cells treated with UVBshowed an increase in cytochrome c release,caspase-3.activity,as well as in theexpression of c-fos and *** addition,all were involved in UVB-induced ***:Our present observations pointed to the ability of PCF toavert UVB-induced apoptosis in thymocytes by modulating c-fos and c-junexpression,cytochrome c release,and the consequent activation of caspase-3.which were essential components of the UV-induced cell apoptotic *** suggested that PCF is a promising protective substance against UVradiation.

Comparison of magnetic fabric parameters of deposits in different modern sedimentary environments indicates that values of \%P, F\% and \%L\% of eolian deposits are lower obviously than those of hydrogenic ones respectively. On relationship diagrams of magnetic fabric parameters, data points of eolian samples concentrated in limited area near origin of coordinates indicate that dynamic intensity is lower with less variation; while those of hydrogenic ones depart from origin of coordinates suggest higher intensity of sedimentary dynamics. Analyses of dynamic characteristics of different sedimentary environments indicate that values of magnetic fabric parameters of deposits are determined by dynamic types and characteristics of depositional processes. Magnetic fabric analyses of deposits are effective in determination of sedimentary environments.

Based on compositive analysis and interpretation of the observed and historical data, the geophysical field characters and structural properties of the Gagua “Wedge” Zone of the sea area east of Taiwan Island and the primary tectonic stress direction and its variabilities of backarc spreading in the southern Okinawa Trough are studied. It is concluded from the study results that the Gagua “Wedge” Zone is structurally consistent with the Gagua ridge and two fault basins on both sides of the Gagua ridge, and adjusts the moving direction and distance of the western Philippine Sea plate to make the northwestward motion of the plate on its east side change to the northward subduction of the plate on its west side so that the primary tectonic stress direction of the Okinawa Trough changed from NW-SE to nearly N-S, which provided the stress source for the Okinawa Trough to enter the second spreading stage.

To investigate the nonlinear properties of wind waves, experiments are carried out in a wind-wave flume with slope bottom at different wind speeds and fetches. Both the internal structure and apparent features of the nonlin-earity of wind waves are studied by using bispectral and statistical analysis of surface elevations. The relations between bispectra and nonlinear apparent characteristics of wind waves are established and confirmed.

The non-local vacuum condensates of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) describe the distributions of quarks and gluons in the non-perturbative QCD vacuum state. Physically, this means that vacuum quarks and gluons have a nonzero mean-squared momentum in the vacuum, called virtuality. The quark virtuality is given by the ratio of the local quark-gluon mixed vacuum condensate to the quark local vacuum condensate. The gluon virtuality is expressed by gluon vacuum condensates and four-quark vacuum condensates. We study the two virtualities by solving Dyson-Schwinger Equations and calculating quark and gluon vacuum condensates. Our theoretical results for quark virtuality are in good agreement with many other theoretical model predictions such as QCD sum rules and lattice QCD calculations. Our calculation on gluon virtuality is initial and the results are quite interesting.

An obvious characteristic of the baroclinic large-scale motions in the equatorial ocean is that the meridional scale H of motion is far smaller than the zonal scale L. The scaling of motion carefully with this striking characteristic in this paper results in two conclusions, i. e., the Coriolis terms associated with the horizontal component of the rotation vector cannot be neglected in the governing equations; and the use of the absence of heating is not suitable to the equatorial region. In this paper the equatorial β-plane nondimensional governing equations with the small parametersδ_0 andδ_1 have been Obtained.

Let π be a set of primes and G a π-separable group. Isaacs defines the Bπ characters, which can be viewed as the "π-modular" characters in G, such that the Bp′ characters form a set of canonical lifts for the p-modular characters. By using Isaacs' work, Slattery has developed some Brauer's ideals of p-blocks to the π-blocks of a finite π-separable group, generalizing Brauer's three main theorems to the π-blocks. In this paper, depending on Isaacs' and Slattery's work, we will extend the first main theorem for π-blocks.

Satellite-tracked drifting buoy data and altimetry data are used to study the active vortex field to the west of Big Island. A pair of vortexes were observed at the trajectory of buoy in 1995. The westward propagation of the vortex pair is studied in detail by reproducing the loops of each vortex. The orbital period and radius of the pair of vortex are determined to be 10-11 d and 58-68 km. Two arrays of contra-rotating vortices are displayed in the average sea surface height anomaly (SSHA) field to the west of Big Island. Based on the calculation of the fluid dynamical parameter, the 'von Karman vortex street' is proved to be generated to the west of Big Island as the North Equatorial Current impinges upon Big Island from the east. Finally, the analysis of the buoy trajectories in a decade contributes to the conclusion of the pattern of VKVS in a statistical view.

Warming in Arctic intermediate and deep waters around Chukchi Plateau and its adjacent regions in 1999

Based on the data measured during Arctic scientific expedition of china in 1999, the characteristics of temperature and salinity distributions around the Chukchi Plateau and its ad-jacent regions have been studied. It was found that the intermediate water with temperature higher than 0.5℃ existed in all parts of a 640 km section with a maximum temperature of 0.85℃ indicating a strong signal of the warming in Arctic Intermediate Water in 1999. Two important phenomena are described in this paper. First, the temperature of warm water was horizontally nonuniform. In the area of Chukchi Plateau, the temperature was higher, the layer of warm water was thicker and the depth of the warm water core was shallower than those in the area of con-tinental slope. The horizontal nonuniformity of the temperature distribution of warming water im-plies that the upward heat flux should also be nonuniform, thus exerting different effects on sea ice thickness, ice extent, and air-sea heat exchange. The mechanism to generate higher tem-perature in the plateau region was the bypassing of current around the plateau area caused by the special local topography, which restricted water exchange across the plateau and conserved heat in the water body. Second, the deep water down to 1400 m was also warming with a tem-perature increase of 0.2℃. The warming in deep water reflects the occurrence of complicated heat redistribution processes in the intermediate water, which altered the thermal structure in the upper 1400 m. The warming data embody the obvious impact of global climate change on the Arctic Ocean and further studies are wanted.
