KINETIC MODELING OF CONSTITUTIVE RELATIONS FOR PARTICLE MOTION IN LOW TO MODERATELY CONCENTRATED FLOWS

Formulating underlying mechanisms of concentrated solid-liquid flows is essential for simulation of various industrial processes and natural phenomena. A generalized constitutive model for particle motion in flows with low to moderate solids concentrations is developed. This generalized model facilitates characterization of inelastic collisions, particle-fluid interactions, and shearing effects. Moderately concentrated simple shear flows of a sand-water mixture are analyzed, and comparisons of model predictions and experimental data are in good agreement. This model exhibits sound performance in characterizing particle motion for wide ranges of concentration and shear rate, and may supply a reasonable and competent alternative to previous models developed for dilute and rapid-granular flows when applied to moderately concentrated situations. The concentration approaches zero (C → 0) asymptote is observed at a relatively high shear rate in model predictions. Assumption of low collisional dissipation of the particle phase as C → 0 is more reasonable for this observation, compared to that without the interstitial fluid effect. Accurately modeling energy dissipation is important for characterizing the stability of dilute simple shear flows of solid-liquid mixtures. Incorporating friction forces will also facilitate improvement of the applicability of this generalized model to flows at extremely high concentrations.

Luminescent Properties and Decay Characteristics of CaS: Mn^(2+) Phosphor

Mn2+ has been synthesized by a new sulfurizing flux method, and the phosphors prepared in this way is relatively stable in water. The fluorescent spectra of CaS host and CaS: Mn2+ have been measured at room temperature. The luminescent centers formed by O2- ions may be responsible for the host’s blue - green emission. The complete disappearance of this emission in CaS: Mn2+ system confirms that there exists efficient energy transfer from the host to the Mn2+ centers. The decay characteristics have been performed. The photoluminescence decay of CaS: Mn2+ consists of slow and fast components due to the single and paired Mn2+ centers, respectively.

The cellular neural/nonlinear network (CNN) is a powerful tool for image and video signal processing, robotic and biological visions. This paper discusses general approaches for designing templates of the Logic OR Logic AND CNNs, and global connectivity detection CNNs, which provide parameter inequalities for determining parameter various intervals for implementing the corresponding functions. An example for detecting the connectivity in a complex pattern is given.

MACROSCOPIC KINETIC MODELS OF GLYCEROL BATCH FERMENTATION WITH OSMOTOLERANT YEAST

Kinetics of glycerol production by fermentation with osmotolerant yeast Candida krusei was studied. Suppositions of cell negative effect on and glucose inhibition in specific growth rate and glycerol assumption for energy maintenance were made. Based on the suppositions, a set of unstructured kinetic models including cell groWth, glucose consumption and glycerol accumulation rate was proposed. To avoid the significant decrease of produced glyccerol in the latter fermentation stage, the fermentation was suggested to be ended when the concentration ratio of glycerol to glucose is close to 7.

CHANGES OF MEAN VELOCITY PROFILES IN THE WAVE-CURRENT COMBINED FLOW

A mathematical model is developed to simulate the change in mean velocity for the coexistent case of waves and current. The experimental results of mean velocity profile in a wave-current flume show the following features: Eulerian mean current profile for following current is more uniformly distributed than the corresponding pure current case, whereas , the case of an opposing current leads to the more straight profile. This model is based on Eulerian mean framework, and motions of wave and current are solved simultaneously. The comparisons of numerical results and experimental data show that the mathematical model presented in this paper is reasonable and feasible.
