He is now a senior research fellow on sedimentology event stratigraphy and sequence stratigraphy in the Institute of Geology CAGS.

Based on studies of sequence stratigraphy, event stratigraphy, biostratigraphy and lithostratigraphy, it is concluded that the Sailinhudong Group is a part of the Bayan Obo Group. Some trilobite fragments are first found in thin sections of the rock from the lower part of the Sailinhudong Group and some Ordovician acritarchs and chitinozoans are also found in this group. A formationa unit of carbonate seismites is first recognized in the upper part and a huge micrite mound is first identified at the top. Dolomite, the host rock of the super giant Bayan Obo Fe-Nb-REE deposits, is neither an igneous carbonatite nor a common bedded sedimentary carbonate, but a huge micrite mound. It has the same macroscopic characters as the micrite mounds at the top of the Sailinhudong Group, which suggests that they should be of the same horizon. According to the fossils, the Sailinhudong and Bayan Obo Groups should be of the Early Palaeozoic rather than the Middle Proterozoic. The new discovery and new idea will throw light on the explanation of the genesis of the supergiant Bayan Obo Fe-Nb-REE deposits.

Warm and humid climate and gentle hilly topography have provided favourable conditions for the devel-opment of the weathering crust of the granite intrusions in the Longnan area, Jiangxi Province. REE is mostlyconcentrated in an adsorption state in clay in the wholly weathered zone. The rare-earth minerals enriched inthe parent rocks provided the source material for the REE enrichment. Exchangeable REE accounts for48-86%. Extraction experiments and stable isotopic study of clay minerals suggest that the downward infiltra-tion of meteoric water and increasing gradient of pH values have played an important role in the enrichment ofREE during the progressive weathering. Slight fractionation of individual REE can not change their distribu-tion patterns in the profiles. which are inherited from the parent rocks.

The Indosinian alkaline complexes in northern Hebei Province are distributed along the two deep faults striking in an approximately east-west direction. These alkaline complexes arc divided into three rock associations: （1） pyroxene diorite-quartz alkaline-feldspar syenite-alkali-feldspar granite-syenite- aegirine-augite syenite-alkali-feldspar granite, （2） pyroxenite-biotite pyroxenite-magnetite apatitic rock -syenite; （3. nepheline syenite-unite-aegirine-augite syenite-ijolite. The former one occurs along the north deep fault, and the latter two along the south deep one. From north to south, the alkaline complexes increase in alkalinity and decrease in the contents of SiO2. Their geochemical characteristics show that the first rock association originated from the transition zone between the crust and the mantle, whereas the latter two originated from the replaced mantle. Their magmas experienced different evolutional processes. These alkaline complexes were resulted from the collision between the Sibrian plate and the Sino-Kerea plate at the end of Hercynian period.

When seismic exploration is carried out for finding oil/gas traps in a sedimentary basin, angular unconformity-like reflectors often appear in a seismic profile, indicating some promising structures such as pinchout. People usually think that the angular unconformity-like reflection pattern could occur only in a sedimentary basin within the upper crust because the pattern corresponds to a combination of a flat layer and some dipping layers, and they belong to different sedimentary sequences. In order to find optimal site for continental scientific drilling in the Dabie-Sulu ultra-high pressure metamorphic belt containing minerals such as coesite and micro-diamond, I have been in charge of geophysical investigations in these Proterozoic metamorphic ter- ranes of crystalline rocks. The investigation includes deep seismic reflection, magnetotelluric survey, gravity and magnetic studies, together with large-scale geological mapping on the surface. In the Shimen site located in southeast Shandong Province, East china, I have found a very clear angular reflection pattern, similar to those obtained by petroleum seismic exploration in sedimentary basins, appearing from 10.3.s to 13.s, right under the Moho discontinuity. This unusual and strange event from the uppermost mantle seems significant and might provide some clues for understanding the interaction between the crust and the mantle. Therefore I present the result here for further studies and worldwide comparison. I shall start with the basic geological settings of this area, then deal with the data acquisition and processing parameters as well as the deep seismic reflection sections to identify the deep angular unconformity-like pattern (see Fig. 4), finally, a brief discussion on interpretation of this type of reflection events.

The Wenchuan Earthquake that occurred in May of 2008 caused damages to large areas of Sichuan,Gansu,and Shaanxi provinces in *** from local governments and related management agencies show that the giant panda nature reserves in the earthquake-hit areas were heavily *** estimates in this paper of the impacts of the earthquake on the giant panda in the earthquake-hit areas were made based on the interpretation of remote sensing images and information collected by field survey.A rapid assessment method was designed to estimate the damages of the earthquake on giant panda *** using visual interpretation methods,we decoded the remote sensing images of the disaster area in the 49 giant panda nature *** results showed that the Wenchuan Earthquake and the succeeding secondary geological disasters caused great damages to the giant panda nature reserves and disturbed the normal life of the giant pandas there (e.g.,landscape fragmentation increased significantly).Undoubtedly,the life of the giant pandas there was ***,although the earthquake caused certain impacts on the giant pandas,it did not really threat their *** so,we still strongly advocate for protection of the giant pandas,and have prioritized a couple of measures to be taken to restore the giant panda nature reserves in the earthquake-hit areas.

It is known that large amounts of Cenozoic high potassium volcanic rocks occur on the Tibetan plateau. The question is where do those high potassium magmas come from? Since the plateau is being compressed by subduction and collision from the surrounding continents,it is a puzzle for us what is the formational environment and tectonic setting of these volcanic rocks? In particular,what is the relationship between these special rocks and formation and uplift of the plateau? We recently carried out an investigation on these Cenozoic volcanic rocks in Hoh Xil,northern Tibetan plateau,including volcanic rocks in the Jingyuhu,Xiongyingtai and Shuangquanzi areas. In the region,some older lava flows occur as thick sheets with a flat surface and weathering crust; while some relatively younger lavas remain a relict volcanic cone or vent. Most of the relict cones are small (1 or close to 1,and mostly belonged to shoshonite\|trachyte association and some to ultra\|potassic rocks. The K\|Ar dating of whole rock and mica shows that the volcanism lasts from middle Miocene (15 47Ma) to Pleistocene (0 69Ma); they are 0 69Ma,13.77Ma and 15 47Ma in Jingyuhu; 11 05Ma,12 22Ma and 12 83.a in Xiongyingai,; 1 58Ma,2 24Ma,5 23.a,5 85Ma,8 20Ma,8 41Ma and 10 67Ma in *** types of xenolith and xenocryst were found in Jingyuhu and Xiongyingtai,i.e..,crustal xenolith and mantle xenocryst.

A typical sequence of fluvial terraces and aeolian deposits overlying these ter- races were multidisciplinary investigated. New evidences for uplift process of the northeastern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau in the past 14 million years were obtained. At least 11 river terraces along Huangshui, the first-class tributary of Yellow River, at the Xining-Huzhu region are identi- fied. While the first one (T1) is classified as an accumulation terrace, the others are all basement river terraces, which consist of the Tertiary sandstone and siltstone bedrock, fluvial gravel and pebbles and the overlying aeolian loess-Red Clay deposit. Samples from the aeolian deposits were examined for paleomagnetic stratigraphic reconstruction (103. samples), luminescence dating (16 samples), magnetic susceptibility and grain-size distribution (more than 4000 sam- ples). The luminescence dating and stratigraphic correlation suggest that terraces of Tll, T10, T8, T7, T3. T2, T1 were formed at 14, 11.3. 1.55, 1.2, 0.15, 0.07 and 0.01 million years ago, re- spectively. Sedimentological analysis and geomorphological observation indicate that formation and evolution of these terraces were mainly driven by tectonic uplift. Therefore, the terrace se- quence provides an ideal geological record, of the uplift process of the northeastern during the past 14 million years, and the timings of the terraces formation are regarded as the timings of tectonic uplift. The significant uplifting events took place at 14, 11.3. 1.2 and 0.15 mil- lion years ago, respectively. The fluvial incision at the Xining-Huzhu region is less than 100 m during a period of ~12 million years in the Miocene era (between the Tll and T9), while the Huangshui River had incised 43. m during the past 1.2 million years (from T7 to the present floodplain). The river incision process clearly demonstrates that accelerated rising of the north- eastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau during the late Cenozoic, and provides new evidence of previous thoughts

Chert of the Upper Sinian Doushantuo Formation near Changyang, western Hubei, china, contains an exceptionally well-preserved assemblage of spinose, spheroidal, and filamentous microfossils belonging to nineteen species. In this assemblage at least fifteen taxa are recognised to be plankton and only four to be microbenthos. The existing of large acanthomorphic acritarchs and a small number of microbenthos (matbuilding cyanobacteria) suggest an open coastal marine depositional environment. In comparison with probable coeval assemblages described from the Baklia Formation Prins Karls Forland, Svalbard (Knoll, 1992a) and the Biskopasen Conglomerate, Norway (Spjeldnaes 1963. 1967; Vidal, 1990), the Doushantuo microfossils (which have similar taxa) are remarkably abundant, diverse, and well-preserved. These data demonstrate the broad geographical distribution of pre-Ediacarian microbial taxa and further validate the use of acritarchs for the correlation of pre-Ediacarian successions.

This paper summarizes the Late Palaeozoic. Indosinian and Yanshanian palaeotectonic settings in theperi-Pacific region of East Asia. On that basis, the Himalayan crustal movement in the region is divided intothe early and late tectonic stages and two principal tectonic phases. From the ocean to the continent, 5 giganticHimalayan formation-deformation belts are distinguished; they are the Northwest Pacific trench-island arcbelt. the Northwest Pacific marginal sea basin bell. the East china Sea-northern South china Seacontinental-shelf down-faulted belt. the East Asian epicontinental rift belt. and the East Asian intracontinentalrift belt. The Early and Late Himalayan tectonic evolution is dealt with. Finally the state of the Himalayan re-gional stress field and its evoution in the region are discussed. It is considered that the mechanism of their for-mation is closely related to the continent-ocean and surface-deep earth interaction.

Having argued the importance of china's sustainable development in global sustainability, the authors review the achievements of china in sustainable development, especially its institutional construction. Environment to be counted in official's political performance rating system is thought of as a new institutional mechanism in china facilitating its sustainable development and then global sustainability. Then its significance is narrated and visions in future are envisioned. In the end, certain concrete suggestions for the rating system are given in a practical way.
