Aim:To investigate the effects of insulin on enhancing 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) anti-cancer functions and its mechanisms in the human esophageal cancer cell line(Eca 109) and human colonic cancer cell line (Ls-174-t).Methods:The effect ofinsulin/5-FU combination treatment on the growth of Eca 109 and Ls-174-t cellswas evaluated by 3.(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-tetrazolium bromide(MTT) *** insulin treatment or insulin/5-FU treatment,cell cycle distri-bution of both cell lines was analyzed by flow *** blot assay wasused to assess the expression of caspase-3.and thymidylate synthase (TS).Apoptosis was detected by flow cytometry,DNA fragmentation assay,and termi-nal transferase dUTP nick end labeling assay (TUNEL).Moreover,the changes of5-FU uptake after insulin pretreatment were detected by HPLC assay and Westernblot ***:We found that insulin enhanced the inhibitory effect of 5-FU on cell proliferation when Eca 109 cells and Ls-174-t cells were pretreated withinsulin for the appropriate *** increased the cell number of the S phaseand the uptake of ***/5-FU treatment enhanced apoptosis of tumor cellsand upregulated the expression of cleaved caspase-3.compared with 5-FU ***,insulin/5-FU treatment induced the changes of free TS and the TSternary complex level compared with 5-FU treatment in Eca 109 and Ls-174-t ***:These data suggest that insulin enhances anticancer functions of 5-FU when it is treated before 5-FU for the appropriate time in human esophagealand colonic cancer cell lines.

Bin1b is a rat epididymis specific β-defensin which may have fertility related functions in addition to its antimicrobial activity. β-defensins are cysteine-rich cationic antimicrobial peptides that have their important implications in innate and adaptive immunity. Though considerable numbers of new β-defensins have been discovered, few corresponding antibodies have been reported. The small peptide with special structure and antimicrobial nature of β-defensins make them very difficult to express in prokaryotic system. Here we adopted a double-copy protein expression scheme based on which not only the mBin1b protein was successfully expressed but also the immunity of the antigen was enhanced. The validity of the antisera was verified by using Western blotting and immunohistochemical analyses. It will be a useful tool for deeply investigating the roles of Bin1b and also provide a simple but effective method in raising antisera against other members of the β-defensin gene family.

We compared the expression patterns of three representative genes in undamaged tomato and tobacco plants in response to exposure to either tomato or tobacco fed on by Helicoverpa armigera (cotton bollworm). When tomato and tobacco, two species of one family, were incubated in the chambers with the tomato plants damaged by the cotton bollworm, the expression of the PR1, BGL2, and PAL genes was up-regulated in leaves of both plants. However, the levels of gene expression were significantly higher in the tomato than that in the tobacco. In addition, the activities of enzymes, peroxidase, polyphenol oxidase, and lipoxygenase were found to be higher in the tomato than those in the tobacco. Similar results were obtained when the damaged plants were replaced by the tobacco.

Interleaving is an efficient measure to resolve the bursty errors in a block fading multiple-inputs multiple-outputs (MIMO) system. For the metrics of network layer, interleaving exerts two conflicting effects on the ultimate delay performance. Specifically, interleaving can advantageously reduce data transmit time. On the other hand, it comes at a cost, entailing an undesired delay penalty resulting from interleaving depth. Here, we exploit a unified model to accommodate these two conflicting effects, and derive the average waiting time in block fading MIMO systems with dynamic-depth interleaving. Such a unified model is developed with a combined method of both information theory and queueing theory. Therefore, the model is capable of characterizing the randomness of data arrival process, hence the nature of dynamic-depth interleaving. The methodology and the results are applicable to designing, evaluating, and tuning the practical interleaving systems.

Stepping acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) as another type of disease has been threatening mankind since late last year. Many scientists worldwide are making great efforts to study the etiology of this disease with different approaches. 13.species of SARS virus have been sequenced. However, most people still largely rely on the traditional methods with some disadvantages. In this work, we used Wolfram approach to study the relationship among SARS viruses and between SARS viruses and other types of viruses, the effect of variations on the whole genome and the advantages in the analysis of SARS based on this novel approach. As a result, the similarities between SARS viruses and other coronavirusxes are not really higher than those between SARS viruses and non-coronaviruses.

Ceramic tapes, containing Al2O3.25 wt pct TiB2(B) and Al2O3.25 wt pct nano-TiC (c), have been obtained by tape casting process. Numerous tapes (about 60～80 tapes) were prepared by stacking in turn the composition (B) and (C), laminating under 10 MPa pressure, eliminating the solvent and burning out the polymer additives. The final green bodies were hot pressed at 1750℃ and 3. MPa. The composite has a bending strength of 568 MPa and a fracture toughness of 5.8 M Pa·m1/2. SEM analysis exhibits that Al2O3.particle growth was inhibited by TiC particles in C. but TiB2 particles could not hinder Al2O3.growth in B. The curves of GTA indicates that all organic additives could be removed completely above 600℃

The conserved residue Gly47 of the chloroplast ATP synthase ε subunit was substituted withLeu,Arg,Ala and Glu by site-directed *** process generated the mutants εG47L,εG47R,εG47A and εG47E,*** the ε variants showed lower inhibitory effects on the soluble CF1（-ε）Ca2+-ATPase compared with wild-type ε.In reduced conditions,εG47E and εG47R had a lower inhibitoryeffect on the oxidized CF1（-ε）Ca2+-ATPase compared with wild-type ε.In contrast,εG47L and εG47Aincreased the Ca2+-ATPase activity of soluble oxidized CF1（-ε）.The replacement of Gly47 significantlyimpaired the interaction between the subunit ε and γ in an in vitro binding *** study showed thatall ε variants were more effective in blocking proton leakage from the thylakoid *** enhancedATP synthesis of the chloroplast and restored ATP synthesis activity of the reconstituted membranes to alevel that was more efficient than that achieved by wild-type ε.These results indicate that the conservedGly47 residue of the ε subunit is very important for maintaining the structure and function of the ε subunitand may affect the interaction between the ε subunit,β subunit of CF1and subunit Ⅲ of CF_o,therebyregulating the ATP hydrolysis and synthesis,as well as the proton translocation role of the subunit Ⅲ of CF_o.
