The genome oiganization and expression strategy of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) have been described extensively. As a structural glycoprotein on the virion surface, the spike protein is responsible for binding to host cellular receptors and for the fusion between the viral envelope and the cellular membrane. It also induces neutralizing antibodies in the host and mediates cellular immunity. Previous studies suggested that amino acid replacements in the spike protein coulddramatically alter the pathogenesis and virulence of some coronaviruses. It is therefore reasonable to test the hypothesis that radical amino acid replacements in the spike protein, favored by environmental selective pressure during the process of SARS-CoV interspecific transmission, might make this pathogen adapt to a new host, In this study, we investigated a total of 108 complete sequences of the SARS-CoV S gene from Gen-Bank (until March 23. 2004). After omission of those records containing frame-shift mutations or low quality sequences, e.g. ZJ01, and selection of one sequence for identical records, an alignment of 42 sequences was obtained using the program Clustal-X. Then, we reconstructed the most recent common ancestor (MRCA) sequences of theSARS-CoV S gene and detected the adaptive evolution in the spike protein.

Aim:To examine the insulin sensitizing effects of a novel α-methyl-α-phenoxylpropionate derivative YY20 in insulin-sensitive cell ***:Theperoxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ（PPARγ）agonist bioactivities of YY20were detected by a preadipocyte differentiation ***-PCR and Westernblotting analysis were used to detect the expression of the target gene or *** effects of YY20 on insulin-mediated glucose consumption were determined inthe HepG2 human hepatocellular carcinoma ***:YY20 could enhancethe differentiation of preadipocytes to adipocytes and upregulate the gene ex-pression of PPARγ2,as well as the protein expression of insulin receptor sub-strate-1（IRS-1）,glucose transporter-4（GLUT4）,and adiponectin（ACRP3.）.Theeffects on GLUT4 and ACRP3. could be reversed by the PPARγ inhibitor ***,YY20 efficiently reduced glucose consumptions in HepG2 cells after24 h culture,and the effects were related to insulin and YY20 ***:YY20,a potential insulin-sensitizing agent like rosiglitazone,couldenhance glucose consumption in HepG2 cells in a concentration-and insulin-dependent *** may improve the insulin resistance associated with type 2diabetes.

This paper reports the kinetic process of Ag ion exchange for the polycrystalline Na-β'-*** interdiffusion coefficients in the process of Ag+ and Na+ ion exchange have been calculated with an 'one dimensional double side diffusion model'. Microstructures of the samples were observed and analysed by XRD, EMPA, SEM. The results of the conductivity measurements for samples with Na+, Ag+ and Na+-Ag+ mobile ions are presented and explained

Aim:Extrapyramidal syndrome (EPS) is most commonly affected by typical antip-sychotic drugs that have a high affinity with the D2 ***,manyresearch groups have reported on the positive relationship between the geneticvariations in the DRD2 gene and the therapeutic response in schizophrenia pa-tients as a result of the role of variations in the receptor in modulating *** this study,we evaluate the role DRD2 plays in chlorpromazine-induced EPS in schizophrenic ***:We identified seven SNP(singlenucleotide polymorphism) (-141Cins>del,TaqIB,TaqID,Ser3.1Cys,rs6275,rs6277and TaqIA) in the DRD2 gene in 146 schizophrenic inpatients (59 with EPS and 87without EPS according to the Simpson-Angus Scale) treated with chlorpromazineafter 8 *** alleles of all loci were determined by PCR (polymerase chainreaction).Results:Polymorphisms TaqlD,Ser3.1Cys and rs6277 were not poly-morphic in the population recruited in the present *** statistical signifi-cance was found in the allele distribution of-141Cins>del,TaqIB,rs6275 andTaqIA or in the estimated haplotypes (constituted by TaqIB,rs6275 and TaqIA) inlinkage disequilibrium between the two ***:Our results did notlend strong support to the view that the genetic variation of the DRD2 gene playsa major role in the individually variable adverse effect induced by chlorpromazine,at least in chinese patients with *** results confirmed a previousstudy on the relationship between DRD2 and EPS in Caucasians.

Simulation of Isotopic Angular Effects under Ion Bombardment of a^(92)Mo-^(100)Mo Target

Under 5 keV Ar ion bombardment of a 92Mo-100Mo target, we have investigated isotopic angular effects by means of the static and the dynamic Monte Carlo programs. Our calculated results are in quantitative agreement with the measured and other calculated results. The conclusion consistences among theories. simulations and measurements are also discussed.

Removal Behaviors of Different SiC Ceramics during Polishing

Comparative experiments were conducted to reveal the removal behaviors of three kinds of silicon carbide （SIC） ceramics during polishing and the effects of ceramic microstructure on the surface quality were also reported. Experimental results show that the second phase in SiC ceramics plays an important role in the surface quality when its size is large enough. The surface quality is enslaved to the formation of steps at interfaces between second phase and SiC matrix that results from different elastic modulus and hardness between two phases. Under 3.μm abrasive grains polishing condition, different SiC ceramics show different removal mechanisms. With decreasing abrasive grain size, all of different SiC ceramics exhibit a ductile removal mode, which decreases surface roughness efficiently.

Development of ancestors' cultivation revealed in phytolith assemblages from Guangfulin relics

shanghai Museum has got great achievements in re-excavating Guangfulin relics. It is the first time that the cultural remains of Wangyoufang type is found above the Liangzhu cultural remains which comes from East Henan Province, providing previous materials for researching cul-ture evolution around Taihu Lake. Samples were taken from the immature soil layer and cultural layers of Guangfulin relics for phytolith analysis. According to the systemic re-search for the archaeological remains and phytolith fossil, the phytoliths in Guangfulin relics can be divided into four zones. The development of rice agriculture and living condi-tion of Guangfulin ancestors was discussed based on the ex-isting rice fan-shaped phytolith, rice shell phytolith, diatom fossil and archaeology evidence in the same layer. The Guangfulin relics has gradually developed since a high sea level 5000 years ago, and the broad rice agriculture has si-multaneously developed. The newly re-excavated relics pro-vides valuable materials for the research of ancestors and ancient culture in shanghai.

The non-destructive analysis of ancient jade artifacts unearthed from the Liangzhu sites at Yuhang,Zhejiang

Samples of the jade artifacts unearthed from the Liangzhu sites at Yuhang (Fanshan,Yaoshan, Huiguanshan and Tangshan) of Zhejiang province were described. The chemical composition, phase and jade structure of a hundred and more intact samples were analyzed by the non-destructive techniques of PIXE, XRD and laser Raman spectroscopy. Results showed that the minerals of the jade artifacts mostly belonged to tremolite and tremolite-actinolite. Relationship of the civilization development in the Neolithic age and the application of tremolite type mineral in jade artifacts was discussed. The contents of rare and trace elements in tremolite jade artfacts and in mineral samples were measured for the first time. The possible mineral sources of these tremolite type jade artifacts were discussed.

Direct transfer of A20 gene into pancreas protected mice from streptozotocin-induced diabetes

AIM: To investigate the efficiency of transfer of A20 gene into pancreas against STZ-induced diabetes. METHODS: PVP-plasmid mixture was directly transferred into the pancreatic parenchyma 2 d before STZ injection. The uptake of plasmid pcDNA3.LacZ or pcDNA3.A20 was detected by PCR and the expression of LacZ was confirmed by histological analysis with X-gal. A20 expression in the pancreas of pcDNA3.A20 transgenic mice was measured by RT-PCR and Western blots. Urine amylase, NO generation, and histological examination were examined. RESULTS: Injection of PVP-plasmid mixture directly into the pancreatic parenchyma increased urine amylase concentration 16 h after operation and reversed it to nearly normal 3. h later. On d 3. LacZ expression could be found in spleen, duodenum, and islets. The development of diabetes was prevented by direct A20 gene transferring into the pancreas and A20-mediated protection was correlated with suppression of NO production. The insulitis was ameliorated in A20-treated mice. CONCLUSION: Injection of PVP-plasmid mixture directly into the pancreatic parenchyma led to target gene expression in islets. Direct transfer of A20 gene into the pancreas protected mice from STZ-induced diabetes.
