Little information is available on the interactive effects of inorganic and organic pollutants on carbon utilization by soil *** study examined the effects of two common soil pollutants,lead(Pb) and bensulfuron-methyl herbicide(BSM),on decomposition of an adscititious carbon source(14C-glucose).Two contrasting paddy soils,a silty clay soil and a clay loam soil,were incubated with different concentrations and combinations of pollutants for 60 *** rotatable central composite design was adopted to design the combinations of the pollutant concentrations so that rate response curves could be *** decomposition of 14C-glucose occurred in the first three days for both soils where no Pb or BSM was added(control).Overall,63.-64% of the added 14C-glucose was decomposed in the control over the 60-day *** addition of Pb or BSM significantly decreased the decomposition of 14C-glucose during the first week but increased the decomposition thereafter;as a result,the percentages of 14C-glucose decomposed(57%-77%) over the 60-day period were similar to or higher than those of the *** of the pollutants in combination did not further inhibit decomposition compared with the ***,decomposition rates were lower in the silty clay soil than in the clay loam soil,which was related to the soil texture,cation exchange capacity,and *** relationship between the decomposition rates and the pollutants could be well characterized by the quadratic regression orthogonal rotation *** initial antagonistic effects of the pollutants followed by the synergistic effects on microbial activity might result from changes of the concentrations of the pollutants.

Most Chinese rivers have experienced great changes in discharge and sediment during the past 50 years. This study attempts to examine the long-term dynamics of riverine carbon flux in the Xijiang River by applying the relationships between riverine carbon concentrations and discharge or sediment to the historical discharge and sediment *** show that POC(particulate organic carbon) flux in the Xijiang has experienced a decreasing trend,caused by reduced sediment ***,DOC (dissolved organic carbon) shows an increasing *** activities including reservoir/dam construction and domestic/agricultural effluents may intensify the upward trend of ***(dissolved inorganic carbon) shows a declining trend with a very small *** of DIC accords well with discharge/*** total carbon flux,a more or less constant,or very small decreasing trend is displayed.

The secure socket layer/ transport layer security（SSL/TLS） handshake protocol uses public key cryptographic algorithms such as RSA for key establishment. Typically, public key cryptographic algorithm is computational intensive due to the modular multiplications. Therefore, SSL/TLS servers often become swamped while performing public key decryptions when the simultaneous requests increase quickly. A batch RSA decryption algorithm was proposed. The novel algorithm provides the reasonable response time and optimizes server performance significantly. The decryption speedup is proportional to the batch size b, for instance, the speedup factor is 4, while in Shacham＇s scheme the acceleration rate is only 2.5 when b = 4.

An explicit simulation of the tropical cyclone Winnie （1997） was conducted by use of a triply-nested 3.D nonhydrostatic mesoscale model MM5, before and after its landfall. The simulated results show that the model can well reproduce the track of Winnie （1997） with a BOGUS storm-like vortex inserted in the large-scale first-guess field at the initial model time. The mean track error in a 6 h interval is 54.5 km, which is much less than that obtained with the operational prediction. Comparisons between simulation and observation near the landfall place show that the main temporal variation features of sea level pressure and surface wind speed can also be successfully captured. The characteristics of the eyewall, the spiral cloud band and the corresponding precipitation were disclosed, and the applications of the model outputs were also discussed.

Seasonal sampling was conducted on 13.sites involving the lower stem of the Xijiang river and its three tributaries to determine the spatial patterns of the riverine water chemistry and to quantify the chemical weathering rates of carbonate and silicate of the *** indicate that the major ions in the Xijiang river system are dominated by Ca and HCO with a higher concentration of total dissolved solids, characteristic of the drainages developed on typical carbonate *** spatial variations of major ion concentrations are found at various spatial scales,which are dominantly controlled by the lithology particularly carbonate distribution in the *** four selected rivers show similar seasonal variations in major ions,with lower concentrations during the rainy *** is the first important factor for controlling the weathering rate in the basin,although increasing temperature and duration of water-rock interaction could make positive contributions to the enhancement of chemical *** chemical weathering rates range from 52.6 to 73.7 t/km/yr within the lower Xijiang basin and carbonate weathering is over one order of magnitude higher than that of *** consumption rate by rock weathering is 2.0×10 mol/yr,of which more than 60%is contributed by carbonate *** flux of CO released to the atmosphere-ocean system by sulfuric acid-induced carbonate weathering is 1.1×10 mol/km/yr, comparable with the CO flux consumed by silicate weathering.

A rice (Oryza sativa L. ssp. japonica cv. Nipponbare) T-DNA tagged population consisting of about 7000 individual lines was generated and screened for rice lesion mimic mutants in the T 1 generation. Ten lines were found to develop spontaneous lesions in the absence of pathogen infection and displayed distinct lesion phenotypes. These mutants were tentatively designated as lm1—lm10 (for lesion mimic), respectively. Lesion formation of lm mutants was developmentally regulated, and all the mutants showed stunted growth and reduced fertility. Genetic analysis demonstrated that all the mutations were recessive, and five partially fertile mutants (lm4—lm8) were derived from different loci. Mimic lesions occurring on the leaves of lm mutants resulted from cell death as revealed by trypan blue staining. Six of them (lm3.lm8) exhibited enhanced resistance to five bacterial blight isolates, indicating their wide-spectrum resistance to this pathogen. These results imply that some lesion mimic mutations of rice might be involved in disease resistance signaling pathways, and that isolation of these mutated genes may be useful for elucidating molecular mechanisms of plant disease resistance. Among the mutants, only one mutant, lm6, was preliminarily shown to cosegregate with the inserted T-DNA in its T 1 generation, making it feasible to isolate the gene responsible for the phenotype of this mutant.
